What I find amazing about A/B/U is how there can coexist cards that say "pay 2 mana: take an extra turn" or "pay 1 mana: draw 3 cards" and other that say "pay 7 mana: prevent 2 damage" or "pay 6 mana: turn a land into a swamp".
@TheEvolver311

Not when you consider that things like 60 card constructed and even EDH are far beyond the level of what the developers envisioned players decks would look like. The closest parallel would be something like a draft or sealed deck. You would just fill your deck out with whatever you had.

Also WOTC, probably, while not realizing their drunk intern thought it would be hilarious to sneak in a card that let you draw three cards for one mana.

Because this was the first card game ever, they did not understand power levels. Also they did not understand how to balance cards. Look what they did in the Urza block after they'd been at it for many years, those mistakes are less forgiveable.

I think it's so funny when you see a list of the worst Alpha cards and one of them's like "you can pay six mana to turn a single land into a Swamp, this card costs 2500 dollars" just because it's so old and never reprinted.
@ROMANTIKILLER2

It is because the incredibly limited print run and rarity, reprints have little to no effect on Alpha/Beta/Arabian Nights specifically, given that there is no demand for those unplayable cards outside of pure collectibility.

This is not a slight at the designers at all, but it's funny to me how cards back then were basically designed like 5 year old me would think about the game: "if this one card does one damage to my opponent every turn, then I'll just win the game in 20 turns! It's basically an auto win! So better make it really expensive and clunky" so funny how far we've come. 😂
@megapussi
@megapussi 10 месяцев назад
That was literally the intention behind the designs. Competitive card games literally did not exist, literally the idea of trying to optimize your deck, or even trading for cards that you wanted, did not exist. Cards were printed to be fun, and werei ntentionally designed to be overpowered or underpowered in order to create interesting contrast. 5 year old you was the target market for that card.

True story - long ago in the couple months between the release of Fallen Empires and the creation of Type 2 tournaments, I had a tournament deck that ran Pure Lace because it ran 4 Black Knights and 4 Orders of the Ebon Hand as it's only creatures. The deck did decently well but Magic was weird in those days.

Living artifact was annoying in the Shandalar game tho. Sometimes, enemies begin with artifacts and the green enemies somehow always find a way to stack 4 of them to the artifact, regenerating more than the damage you deal them every turn. Its not very powerful or anything but it just drags fights on.

@@andygoody2599 yeah its even worse when they enchant 4 living artifacts on their ivory towers and get multiple of them in play as well. Sucks ass if youre playing like, black or blue in this game as they have very little ways of dealing with artifacts or enchantments.

I was struck by the art on nearly every one these cards. On Power Leak, moldy splotches surround a vague outline of a human doubled over in pain. It's blurry, soft, mottled, and brown and white and red. Someone PAINTED this. It conveys a feeling, not a thing. The art on the Lace cycle depicts the abstract idea of what each color in magic is about. A dove, an eye, a skull. It's nothing happening and it's no one, but instead it's a thought. An embodiment, a significance. This is the art that made me fall in love with the game as a child on a picnic blanket with my friends in the summer. Today, the art of Magic is more often exactly and rigidly what is described by the title of the card. I view it on a computer. It is made on a computer. The lines are perfect and it is always a wizard, monster, explosion, or beam of light. There is no picnic blanket and I am no longer a child. I am an adult between meetings and chores. Today's Magic art makes me think something. I miss art that made me feel something.

Thank you for this beautiful comment. As we move into a more AI-dominant digital era, I hope we never forget the value of human beings producing art by hand and capturing ideas, rather than just depictions of physical objects. Inevitably, we're all getting older and will see things with different eyes, and I do find myself feeling nostalgia when I see old Magic art. As a an aside, if I was to name my favorite card in my collection, it's a Chronicles Storm Seeker, which has scuffs and marks from seeing play on a sidewalk before school. Lots of memories on that one, which can never be replaced.
@arbit4468
@arbit4468 9 месяцев назад
While I somewhat disagree about digital art being less special than physical media, I think your point about Magic art being too literal these days is well made. If they reprinted the laces... for some reason... they'd redo the art showing, like, a wizard in blue shooting a blue beam and a guy in red shooting a red beam that turns the blue beam red or something like that.

Cyclopean Tomb wasn't as bad early on, because Landwalk was a much bigger part of the meta back then. Being able to turn an opponent's land into a swamp on turn five could put your opponent on a two turn clock at that point.
@astuteanansi4935
@astuteanansi4935 10 месяцев назад
These days I could sorta see use for it in a Wrexial commander deck. Wrexial has swampwalk and a very juicy effect if it connects, Tomb allows that, with a very narrow side effect of hosing powerful nonbasic lands. I dunno if I would run it over Urborg or the countless evasion effects in the format, but it's something :D

@CenJohan
@CenJohan 10 месяцев назад
White Ward is funny to me in the fact that, going by the text on the original printing based on current rules, it literally enchants a creature to give it pro white then falls off since the aura is white. It wasn’t until it’s last printing in 4th edition where it gains text specifying that the protection does not remove white ward.
@GreenLuthor
@GreenLuthor 9 месяцев назад
Even funnier, they had to include that extra text on ALL the Wards because of cards like the Laces or Sleight of Mind. So Red Ward says that the Protection From Red it grants doesn't remove Red Ward, even though it doesn't anyway unless someone hits it with a Chaoslace or something. I don't know how often those situations ever came up, but I'm guessing "not very".

I think Conservator by itself isn't number 1 bad, but in a way it's the worst card on the list. Life gain, color hosing, dealing damage, all things with some sort of payoff available. Preventing damage has absolutely no synergy with anything, which is probably why it's the least played on EDHrec of the whole terrible list. It's not a case of "there's better cards that do this available" it's more "no one would ever want to do this in the first place."

So many of these cards being auras is interesting. They definitely didn't understand how devastating it could be to be 2-for-1'ed, but I also think they were also scared of repeatable effects becoming oppressive. Look at Homestead and Conservator, for example. As another example, early attempts at equipment-style artifacts were usually massively overcosted both in casting and "equip" cost, plus they thought they needed to saddle them with "if the targeted creature dies, so does your artifact" clauses.

I had actually considered Conservator... then I realized it had been errat'd from 'prevent life loss' to 'prevent damage'. The former would have at least been a relatively unique, if still over costed effect. The latter has who knows how many ways to do it better.
@bluedestiny2710
@bluedestiny2710 10 месяцев назад
actually, back then, we had some arguments with conservator. Because of the wording, we always questioned if attack triggers went through (i.e Hypnotic Specter)... and we all agreed it would... so I stopped using it in favor of the Circles of Protection

I would rank the laces as better than Farmstead. Sure it's magical Christmas land thinking, but if you can actually get a lace AND a color hoser together it COULD lead to a blowout. It's absurdly unlikely, but it's a higher ceiling. Farmstead, however... is doing the same overcosted nothing in each and every situation.
@kanrakucheese

The most baffling thing about the Lace cycle is that when they were printed, pretty much the only reason you'd even want to change colors is to get *around* Protection without adding another color to a deck (remember Black Knight+White Knight were uncommon and are decent creatures by today's standards and even better in their day). The Laces can't even do *that* because they can only make a card the color of mana you already have!

That was an interesting view from modern Magic. Some of these cards were actually played to great effect in the first few years of the game. It would be cool to see a list from the viewpoint of when the game was only Alpha. Powercreep and changes in gameplay tactics drastically changed the usefulness of these cards. Some, like the laces, were more reviled at the time due to being Rares than being "terrible" (which they are).
@NizzahonMagic
@NizzahonMagic 10 месяцев назад
It is admittedly difficult to find out for sure how these cards performed when there was just Alpha -- especially because the game was completley different. Until 1994, there wasn't a 60-card minimum nor was there a restriction to 4 copies of a card. So, keeping that in mind -- none of these cards were good in a format like that either, even if people were playing them, because the only thing that made sense when Magic was that busted was to just run the channel fireball combo and that was your deck.

The damage auras were much more powerful in the early 90s. That effect (without need for a permanent to target, of course) has been costed at 2 mana more recently and up through today, and has still proved fringe playable to okay in limited. I don't think they really merit a spot on this list. If you were drafting early Magic, for example (not that anyone did or should), these cards would be much more impactful than a 1 mana 1/1.

If i were to guess, its probably bec its too slow to do anything significant. While it can ping your opponent for 2, sure, but ive seen matches in legacy and vintage where the game ends within 2 - 3 turns. Also... Power Leak doesnt stop those enchantments from doing their thing, so enchantments controller doesnt lose much advantage with that thing. Plus, Power Leak gived the option to your opponent... so if its not advantageous to take damage (i.e your opponent is flooding), he can just blank the card completely

Man there is so much bad cards with arts by Amy Weber which makes a lot of awesome card arts, such a shame

isn't battle a permanent type less common than enchantement ?

Hear me out: Serra Avatar, donate it to an opponent, enchant with Creature Bond and blow it up!

That would be fun, all right. But a four card combo that needs a seven mana creature in play to start probably isn't going to come together very often.

Would say that Farmstead is the worst card printet, ever.

Poor Anson Maddocks, illustrating so many of these...

"Enchantments are the least prevalent non-planeswalker permanent type in the game" pretty sure Battles and Tribals are rarer tbh, which makes enchantments 'the fourth least prevalent permanent type' which sounds a lot less like a relevant criticism

In my defense, Tribal isn't a permanent type -- it can appear on any card type and is effectively a super type even though they call it a "type." After all, no card is just "Tribal". I did space out on Battles, though.

@NizzahonMagic yeah I wasn't sure whether I should consider Tribal to even be a 'permanent type', but there are permanents with Tribal, like bitterblossom, so *shrug*. But yeah obvi no Battle or Planeswalker (or Tribal card type) hate in Alpha, so your point stands

I was so expecting Healing Salve or Earthbind to be on the list!
@bluedestiny2710
@bluedestiny2710 10 месяцев назад
To give Earthbind some credit, it is actually a sorcery speed removal for smaller creatures. As inefficient as it was, it was still something that could do something something relevant and give you a 1:1 trade. Healing Salve... errr.... its... still 1 mana for something that gives you 3 life or prevent 3 damage? ... I mean... it's better than 5 white mana for 1 life?

I'm glad Lich wasn't included - I think it's a terrible card, but I love the flavor.

Alpha wasnt the „most powerful“ set. It was just unbalanced in the most broken way possible.

I don't know, I think Darksteel and Kaladesh both fit that description better.

You really should say 100 card commander. Cuz the commander technically counts as part of the deck. Which is important because playing commanders like Partners or Backgrounds means that you only run a 98 card deck.

Man, MtG art used to be so fucking good... nowadays barely any card is worth looking at for more than half a second.

@@CleazyMane-ef2cg It might have the same abilities, but it would cost five or six mana. And deal 2 damage to you during your upkeep.

To be fair, Deathlace would work with Exorcist, but at that point you could just play Darkest Hour
