Thank you for making people aware of this. I had the MTHFR test by my psychiatrist over 20 years ago and found I do have a mutation. I’ve been taking 15 mg L-Methylfolate ever since. Medications were not working or processing within my body. Once started, all medications now work which also affects my mental health. Some medications rather than making me sleepy, would keep my body hyperactive.

❤❤❤ This is thee best, most thorough, easiest to understand explanation of this complicated process of MTHFR Mutations I have found. It is a current challenge of mine to find a Professional that can determine what exactly I am dealing with that is not functioning properly and what exactly I need to do to start functioning again. I am Homozygous VDR Taq. I am also Compound Heterozygous A1298C & C677T. On my Detox Profile I have 4 Homozygous Gene Mutations. I have not received any supplement to address my Homocysteine level. I am tired of Suffering. Thank you for this great explanation. ❤

This was very helpful & I'm glad I found this channel. My husband & I both have homocysteine levels on the higher levels & my dr tells my husband to give blood - because his is higher than mine. Oddly enough, even with high quality supplements - we test low for folate & B12 ... so most likely, we have mthr? I'm going to make sure to add the right ones & look into testing.

Most B-Complex includes folic acid not folate. The body still has to do the folic -> folate conversion and that's what doesn't work well if you have the MTHFR gene. Most B-complexes do not contain folate but rather the cheaper folic acid (often too little). You can also supplement 5 mg of folic acid to boost your folate levels... as adding more folic acid will result in more folate being produced... even if your enzyme is operating at only 25% normal. The methylation of folic -> folate would also benefit from methyl-B12... which only the better B-complexes use. 🙂

I've got the MTHFR homozygous mutation but folic acid seems to convert to folate OK... as long as I take extra folic acid daily i.e. As part of a B-complex About once a week I take an extra 5 mg of folic acid. Folate (400 mcg) doesn't agree with me. I feel like I've got too much folate in my system i.e. Feel puffy like you do if you have an allergy. I've had my homocysteine under control for many years and checked my methylation profile. I definitely have enough folate in my system. N.B. I credit slow release niacin (inositol hexanicotinate 500 mg) with bringing homocysteine down.... more than the folic acid. Cholesterol, CRP, FFA's and HbA1c all dropped when niacin was started. :-)

Those who address this MTHFR issue never breakdown for us who have the gene mutation and have low low homocysteine.

In essence you also have to detoxify any folic acid you may ingest…I took folic acid my whole life because of a neural tube defect….i have fatty liver now…has this possibly caused it? I am homozygous for all three gene defects, it affects my mood, my sleep,and anxiety….i do take methylpro brand of L methyl folate as of two years ago…. Is there something else I should be doing?

You don't have to detox folic acid, it gets excreted within eight hours of ingestion. What you DO need to do is stop ingesting it in the first place. Check all of your supplements, as some may include folic acid (particularly multivitamins and b-complexes), and stop taking any that do. You will also need to stop eating any "enriched" grains, which unfortunately is almost all grains. Even things labeled organic are almost always "enriched" with folic acid and inorganic iron, in the US. Cereal, pasta, bread, pastries, plain flour, all of it. It is possible to buy unenriched grains, if they are imported from countries which don't have an "enrichment" policy. For example, pasta imported directly from Italy. But don't be fooled by italian-sounding brand names. Many of those are made in the US. It's such a minefield. The "enrichment" policy in the US should be ceased immediately, since it makes common foods poisonous to such a large percentage of the population.

B12 comes as -CN (cyano), -CH3 (methyl), -OH (hydroxyl) or adenosyl. 🙂
