Agreed! It was so good that I wish there was a studio version of it. Deftones have quite the great collection of cover songs that are just amazing. Even songs that I didn’t really care for the original. The Deftones managed to not only give this cover an added “darker” texture to an already beautifully dark song but did so while using their distorted guitars to make it heavier without making it sound silly or forced. In my opinion, it is an example of a “perfect” cover in where the original song is portrayed respectfully and the band covering them was able to put their accent into it as well, without taking any of the magic that made the original so amazing.
The Cure is unquestionably the top 10 essential rock band ever. Robert Smith is amazing but it's a total honor to have Chino sing your songs. Top 5 best singers ever. 🤣
The AFI cover is one of my favorites but they couldn't have picked a better song for Deftones to cover. They absolutely captured the atmosphere of that song and nailed it.
The Cure", e nel sottofondo c'erano le canzoni di Lullaby e Close to Me.
Kinda weird, watching The Cure watch other people perform their songs.... Having said that - I liked the AFI version of Just like Heaven. Robert Smith has such a way of working the crowd that is very unique.
Interesting choice of bands. Deftones definitely saved the night with their version of "If only tonight we could sleep". It was the oe song of he evening that had such depth and emotion in it.
It’s funny you mentioned Manson, because usually I’m fine with him. He puts on……err USED TO put on a great live performance for his first 4 albums (then completely lost control of his drug use, lost his voice and live shows became cringe). But he really irked me as the presenter. Very campy & trying way too hard to be…. Idk what he’s trying to be but it was painful to watch. It’s upsetting that this show wasn’t better because there are so many bands that could have done Justice to the Cure’s music. I mean just off the top of my head: Peter Murphy and/or Bauhaus, Peter Hook, New Order, Trent Reznor, Tori Amos, Placebo, Dresden Dolls, PJ Harvey, James Addiction, Exho and the Bunnymen, David Bowie, etc. I get what MTV did though. First I get that they wanted bands from today that were inspired by the Cure, but as per usual MTV chose commercialism over quality and found bands that were inspired by the Cure yes, BUT were for the most part chosen for either the record labels pushing for a bands exposure and also bands that were popular to a younger crowd, that let’s be honest…. Don’t really know who the Cure were. They chose the wrong target audience as the majority of people who watched this were either the old skool older people and a small group of new generation fans. This could have been so much better. Though I’ll also giver credit to AFI, as they did a good version and did them justice.
Blown away by AFIs cvr of Just like Heaven. Singer's persona reminds me of Pete Steele (Carnivore) and Baron Misuraca/ old bass player fm (Sheer Terror).
nah pretty sure he praised the performance-- I think I read in an interview that he appreciated how they reinvented the song in their style instead of doing a copycat type of performance.
Deftones were the only meaningful cover. They captured the feel, they made something with the song. They added something to it but kept it respectful. You could feel the vibe in the crowd was so different. Not overly freaky. Just feeling it suspended in melancholy. Like closing your eyes and floating.
Now they’re actually going to perform themselves about time lol I don’t mind Robert smith’s voice actually that’s because I heard him sing with blink-182 so
Marilyn just had to make it all about himself and his stupid antics and Blink 182? Cmon man! and I bet the band was soooo creeped out when MM did that crawling obsession skit bs.. way to mess up a great chance to actually respect the band 🤮 MTV should have been cancelled after the 80s anyhow
