But I checked out your channel, so I know where you're coming from. 15 years ago I was your age and had just learned how to play Dammit and thought Tom was tight, so I feel ya dawg.
I found the CoCatalog (copyright office) listing for it years ago, and the notes on the listing stated it was a "Main Mix", which in the music industry denotes a studio version.
RJAWolfe 07 They both loved the Descendents / All who were the biggest influences for early blink, but Mark's favorite band is the Cure and they shaped his music taste. He might not have ever played bass if it wasn't for the Cure, especially considering the first song he learned was A Forest.
Nah they probably would've sounded more like Angels and Airwaves. That's what Tom thought they would've done next after untitled. Hell, in the 2003-04 concerts, before Tom starts playing 'down', Tom plays a riff that sounds just like something that would be used for AVA lol.
tbh I reckon neighbourhoods would've been their sound after this anyway. In the mtv album launch you can hear tom play the riff from one of the neighbourhoods songs in there
This is the direction i wish blink stayed with and evolved into what they're making today. This sound with all the passion here would sound incredible.
They would’ve ended sounding like Neighborhoods regardless, which I don’t care. I love Neighborhoods, and California is great, but I would give it up for another album like it
this was a cover done the right way. blink made it their own. every other band just tried to sound as much like the cure as they could. most bands that play bars every night can sound like someone else, thats not all that impressive. kudos to blink for being blink.
This performance is perfect. It might suck to some people but this is 100% what blink was in 2003/2004. Just high energy blink having fun and making it their own...knowing that a large amount of Cure fans probably won't like it. Robert obviously sees it in the right way and likes it a lot, which is awesome. He did sing an entire song on their self-titled record and he thought that record was really good!
2004. I was 15 and saw this live on German TV. I never thought I would understand this song. 2007 I fell in love and she loved me. Until 2017 when she left me. Now I am 34 and it is 2024. Still love her. Always will do. Missing the early 2000s. Life was hard but true. So was love.
This is how a cover should be - staying true to the band's style that's playing it, while still playing the recognizable chords and singing the right melody
182182alex wow, i don't even remember this haha! this reply just popped up when I was browsing. it's interesting how much you can change in 3 years, I probably haven't even listened to Blink in like a year. even though they used be huge Idols of mine. thanks for the blast from the past! :)
I've been a fan of Blink since the 90s. Out of all the albums, all the songs - This is my favorite song I've ever heard them do. Best rendition of this Cure song, by far.
I remember watching this entire show and how they showed a clip of Robert Smith telling how he did a song with Blink for their album (All Of This) and how his friends said he was nuts for even thinking about the idea. I guess alot of ppl didn't take Blink seriously back then because of their poop jokes and songs about blowjobs. That self titled album is still their masterpiece. I mean they've matured a little from the poop and blowjob songs, sounded like their favorite 80's bands yet still hadn't lost their energy of previous albums.
i even think that song is about as good as it gets meshing the cure and blink together, they really did a stellar job in creating a song that would fit the cure style and that wouldn't lose blink's essence
Props to blink for putting their own spin on this. I felt like this was the only performance during this thing were Robert Smith didn't look completely bored.
Damn I was 12 when the Self Titled album came out. Don't make me feel too old now. Been listening for 20 years now. \../ Green Day's "American Idiot" came out in 8th grade for me. Also it's cool that blink is still popular today among people in highschool and whatnot. Adam's song got me through my darkest days of highschool until tomorrow held better days.
Still remember when I watched it on tv.. Back when mtv was good and we didn't have all this Facebook/phone apps and "everything is accessible" way of life
I think they did a really good job in my opinion. Sure, it doesn't sound anything like the original but, wouldn't that be kind of boring? like... hey let me cover your song and try my best to sound like you. "Be Who You Are" no? That's what I felt like they did. They obviously put a lot of time, effort and practice for their rendition. It does sound blink-182ish but that doesn't make it a bad cover, it just means you don't like their style of music. I really like the original but, I also blink's version probably just as much. ;D
It’s so sad that this was the BEST era of blink, yet there was so much turmoil within the band at that point. I wonder what it would have been like had they not broken up the first time… also this is the era where they’re the BEST LOOKING, Mark is so hot fr 😍💕
Mark and Tom are huge cure fans and a lot of what started Blink-182 was The Cure's influence. I could see the try-hard in Mark and TONS of energy from Tom. Travis is BEASTING IT as always and those small nods from Robert Smith during the performance must be such a huge honor and bucket list check from each band member. Damn what a great performance and cover. And blink-182 being intro'd by Marilyn Manson himself? shit. wow. Never thought i'd see the day.
To me, this is Blink-182's best live performance ever. It's slightly better than the Pepsi Smash "I Miss You," which is weird because "A Letter To Elise" isn't even a Blink song. If I remember correctly, the band rehearsed religiously ahead of the performance to give Robert Smith and the gang a good impression, and give justice to the song. Blink-182 rarely rehearsed. After all, they're a punk rock band. It's also great that they decided to give Mark all the vocals here. Tom would've fucked it up with his voice. At least he got to concentrate on his absolutely brilliant guitar work here. And Mark's voice is obviously closer to that of Robert Smith compared to Tom. Absolutely grand tribute and performance by the band.
I love how raw this version is. The energy is what drives this. It's really cool. The beautiful sadness is what makes the original Cure version so great, and it truly is wonderful as well. I thoroughly enjoy both versions, and will listen to one or the other depending on what kind of mood I'm in. Thank you, Robert Smith, for writing such a wonderful song.
This performance is so damn good and underrated!! Blink was never better than this period after they released the self titled album. That album was pure master piece and as a teenager it took me a couple listens to really buy into the new record bc I wanted take off your pants and jacket and enema sounding blink. I quickly got over that and that it became my favorite and it has aged like a fine wine into my early thirties! This cover in front of the cure is just an added bonus to that awesome sound they created for that album along with Not Now!
I’ve always wondered about Not Now. It was on my Untitled album when I was 10 or 11 which was when I first got into them. So I never knew that it was only on the greatest hits for some people. It’s always been one of my fav blink songs
Lyrics: Oh Elise it doesn't matter what you say I just can't stay here every yesterday Like keep on acting out the same The way we act out Every way to smile Forget And make-believe we never needed Any more than this Any more than this Oh Elise it doesn't matter what you do I know I'll never really get inside of you To make your eyes catch fire The way they should The way the blue could pull me in If they only would If they only would At least I'd lose this sense of sensing something else That hides away But you and me, we're worlds apart With aching looks and breaking hearts And all the plans your hands can make Oh I just take as much as you can throw And then I throw it all away Oh I throw it all away Like throwing faces at the sky Like throwing arms round Yesterday I stood and stared Wide-eyed in front of you And the face I saw looked back The way I wanted to But I just can't hide my tears away The way you do Elise... believe I never wanted this I thought this time I'd keep all of my promises I thought you were the girl always dreamed about But I let the dream go And the promises broke And the make-believe ran out... Oh Elise It doesn't matter what you say I just can't stay here every yesterday Like keep on acting out the same The way we act out Every way to smile Forget And make-believe we never needed Any more than this Any more than this And every time I try to pick it up Like falling sand As fast as I pick it up It runs away through my clutching hands But there's nothing else I can really do There's nothing else I can really do There's nothing else I can really do At all...
I remember introducing my friends to Dude Ranch in the 90s, we all loved Blink instantly. And here I am, like 30 years later and finding this song, after having a seriously intense love with a girl named Elise. So much feelz rn.
I never forget about dis song cuz of blink 182 made it darker n so fckn dope.. i feel like it just happened yesterday, i wanna get back in dis era 😢 blink182lifeforlife
The first time i listen to blink 182 is 14 years ago and with them they become my favourite band of all time. I thought i know every song and every cover but this moment i see this video for the first time ^^ Awesome !!!!!!!!!
I thought Blink was a talentless garbage band until the first time I heard this and saw how much they could do with this song and I've taken them seriously since.
Always a huge fan of Blink 182. Looked at as pop/punk, but they do have a lot of talent. Travis is an amazing drummer and when they do shit like this, they always make it work so well. Love this rendition.
The build up starting at 2:03 pumps me the fuck up and I feel like jumping and grabbing my guitar at 2:12 with that nice distortion. I’ve been listening to this cover ever since it’s been available on RU-vid and it never gets old. Masterpiece
@@brianporter6192 nah, go to untitled, he recorded a song with blink shortly after this, he loved the cover and honestly the solo Tom does at 3 minutes in is one of his few good live moments
