@@nosoyallowed828 AFI copied Just Like Heaven, and all they got was a polite smile at the end of the song meanwhile the other members looked unenthused as all hell. Deftones interpreted the cure's "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" and got a tad more favorable reaction from Robert and co.
What an honour it is to be playing in front of your heroes and to receive that nod of ackowledgement from an icon, Robert Smith is just an icing on the cake. Deftones were blessed and they deserved the warm reception and cheer they got from The Cure. Well played, a little faster than needed but still remarkable enough.
For those that stop by this video, if you have never heard the original, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn how closely this cover resembles the original. Kudos to The Cure for creating a hauntingly dark song that would eventually fit perfectly with the sound that the Deftones have come to be known for. If you are looking for that darker sound by The Cure but are having a hard time finding it, try the album Disintegration.
Deftones would probably have a slower opening. I think the opening bass would feature more prominently with distortion to give a heavier feeling. The Cure has this distant, lonely sound. Deftones would sound/feel wider, bigger I think. I would expect electric guitar as a substitute for the strings. Chino's voice would add quite a different element to it as well. Overall, I don't think they'd stray too far from the original sound like the cover in the video. I'm always down for more covers by Deftones :D
Disintegration is one of my favorite albums of all time..& I’m just stumbling across this cover now, nearly 2 decades after it was recorded, and I never realized how much Chino resembles Robert w his vocals. This kicks asssss..
For the past 35 years i have been a Cure fan. I have only been a fan of the Deftones for 13 years and originally started listening to them because of their love for the Cure. But this song, OMG I love it so much. It might be blasphemy to say this, but I love this version way more than the original. i love the harder edge and the vocal performance so close to Robert's. Great video!
@@NeulichimKanal not sure but its rare to find someone doing an actual awesome cover of a song , just as good as the original artist...I love the cure, btw🖤
Glad chinos voice didnt give him too much shit here (it was particularly damaged around this period) must have meant a lot to him to play infront of the cure like this.
Its because you can't improve on perfection. The Deftones proved that cliche wrong, as always. I look at things from a sexually violent point of view, so don't trust my opinion.
I expected my boys to destroy this, and they delivered. Both bands live by "Innovate or Die," so Robert had to be stoked to see what they'd do with it. He looked pretty fucking genuinely happy about it.
One of my fave songs by The Cure. I was kinda pissed of that only Deftones made nice cover. Well congratulations for them. Great job. I miss old MTV icons...Who will be honored now? Bieber when he got old ;/ I hope not...
Wow, fantastic cover and live no less.Robert Smith looked pleasantly surprised. Deftones have been one of best live. Another cover I absolutely love and it's not live is the Chauffeur originally -Duran Duran. Both version are great but their cover is slightly better actually.
If only tonight we could sleep In a bed made of flowers If only tonight we could fall In a deathless spell If only tonight we could slide Into deep black water And breathe And breathe Then an angel would come With burning eyes like stars And bury us deep In his velvet arms And the rain would cry As our faces slipped away And the rain would cry Don't let it end
I saw the cure at UC Davis when they started they're tour for The Head on the Door. They had an ordinary drummer, but then this dude playing a military style baritone drum. It was cool.
I would've shitted my pants if Marilyn Manson introduced my band to perform in front of the Cure. I bet that Chino was honored and utter hyped for this. Brilliant Cover!
