December 10, 2019 Through the tops at 17,000 minus 1C outside had mostly light but 15 or 20 minutes of moderate mixed icing... Going up not an option, going down would work as a last resort but ground speed was 350 KTS (that I liked) weather area under us was only 60 miles across, anti-ice, de-ice were holding the indicated airspeed to 200KTS plus or minus 5KTS (in part thanks to fresh application of ICEX II on all boots and props) so we stayed at altitude until passing through the weather area and ready for descent...
WARNING: Do not take icing conditions lightly, have a way out.... usually the way out is your best option, take it early not later.. Flying in and around icing conditions is for the experienced and well equipped. View any icing encounter in aircraft without icing protection as an emergency... Pre-flight planning is the key to successful winter flying, know the freezing level and cloud layers, know your en-route and arrival weather. Stay up with the weather while en route. Sometimes conditions are better than forecast but many times they can turn ugly fast. Climbing out of icing (unless you are flying a jet) is usually not possible, iced up airplanes do not climb they go down so plan on descending to a non icing altitude (you should know what that is from your pre flight planning) A 180 out of the weather may be your best friend... take it if you have any doubts...at all... one more thing, sustained flight in icing conditions is NOT recommended or advisable, de-icing and anti-icing systems allow equipped aircraft to transit icing conditions on climb outs and approaches.. that's it fly safe
