I didn't know that turbo Props did "run ups" prior to take off. High decibels for the passengers in back? Thanks. Cool. I've always loved this airplane.
Not a runup in normal sense, we are checking NTS system. Then just prior to takeoff move the condition levers from idle 78 percent to 100 percent Not noisy in back
Former Demo pilot in the MU-2 series for MAI., Mitsubishi Aircraft International. One of the finest, safest and best performing corporate turbo props I flew in my career and there were a few. The MU-2 acquired a bad rap because of pilot inexperience and lack of training except for the professional pilots.
Thanks for the comment , the Commander is a nice aircraft MU2 due to high wing loading rides better in turbulence. A point that is often not mentioned when comparing it to other turboprops
This is one of the best approach videos on RU-vid. More than impressed. Thanks again for these fantastic productions. My history with this airplane and engines make it all the more enjoyable
@@bluefishbeagle1 Just a gee whiz for you know my interest, I was the chief engineer at Garrett for the TPE 331 engines and worked side by side with T. Nishioka who was MHI's chief engineer on the airplane.
Some day I am coming to Muscle Shoals. Thanks for putting out these videos to help me through the pandemic. Nice balance between out the window, sub-titles, instruments, and other displays.
Nice Overhead 270 to a wide short approach. Some pilots do them wrong and overshoot final. ELMCFi Retired. Have a playlist of short approaches in this channel.
Not really, just a different mindset and engine out compared to conventional twins, more like jet single engine but with 1/4 the power, not difficult single engine at all. With correct Power and energy management it's a pleasure to fly. I'd rather fly it than a King Air, handles turbulence much better due to high wing loading at cruise configuration
The airframe is one thing, the real cost is in the turbines. Have worked on dozens and dozens, and completed HSI, gearbox inspections and complete overhaul's on 3-4 times that many Every time that little gauge goes over that little red line put several thousand dollars in a jar. Your going to need it. However this aircraft and the Turbocomander are some of the best aircraft that were made. MU-2 came to the US in a box and were assembled in San Angelo Texas.
Turbine of all makes do not take abuse without cost. The TTPE331-10 is a robust engine that can run and make power even with lots of heat damage, of course at teardown things get expensive. In 2008 we paid 175K per engine for overhaul, the prices now are much much more. but still less than Pratts..
In the early-mid 70s, I grew up near SJT. Still recall rows of these still green, out on the ramp, others painted. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the MU-2.❤️
I used to overhaul Garrett Tpe 331 turbines. From the dash 1 to the dash 10 And no, there is no way to quiet them down. It's 100% all the time. And that's why I love em. No hush kits.
Flaps 40 landing, 119 is required (using 40 flap setting) until runway assured then cross the numbers about 105 touch down in the 90 or less range. The aircraft will slow rapidly in the flare, power is not reduced to flight idle until all three wheels are on. IFR approaches on autopilot require 125KIAS minimum (per autopilot limitation) , I usually fly an approach in the 135KIAS range.
@@bluefishbeagle1 I haven't flown one in 30 years but I flew every production model Mitsubishi ever made and have . Great airplane, but we flew 110 kts until starting the flare maneuver unless you were doing a short, short field landing in which case you could fly 100 kts to 100 ft and then begin the power reduction aiming for a firm (not hard) touchdown at about 80-85 kts. That was before the FAA-mandated "type rating" but I did go to Flight Safety on it in Houston. Loved the airplane. Built like a brick house with great performance. My only complaint was the noise level.
Autopilot limitation requires minimum speed of 125KIAS, so using autopilot or hand flying I stay above that usually about 130KIAS over the fence varies depending on wind but usually no wind its about 118 KIAS with touchdown between 90-100KIAS.
@@bluefishbeagle1 - Thanks for your reply. I'm surprised it's that fast since I have read the stall speed for the MU-2B-40 is 73 kts and the MU-2B-60 is 76 kts. A 1.3 Vso would put that around 100 kts for an over the fence speed and just above stall at touchdown.. Oh well, I'm just a private pilot with about 200 hrs in Skyhawks and Archers. RU-vid videos are about as close as I will get to an MU-2. Unless I win the lottery.
Auto-focus is often unreliable; that's why it's usually better to pre-set the camera's focus to infinity (when videoing at a distance beyond 100-200 feet).
@@bluefishbeagle1 Thanks! (I try to help when I can...) You might want to experiment with your camera(s) ahead of time and see how they will perform under different conditions. It was unclear what kind of camera you were using... it's almost always better to use a more-capable (IE: dedicated, not a cellphone) camera when shooting video you want to be quality...
Thanks for subscribing, hope to have another video soon, I fly single pilot so once the camera is on and running I ignore it and do video editing later at home. Not the best for making videos but flying and safety comes first, I am a hater of in flight distractions
The flight instrumentation and chart overlay are fantastic. This was definitely one the nicest instrument approach videos I’ve seen, well done, and fancy flying, too!
This machine is the TOUGHEST light turbo prop made in the world. NOTHING is built like it in KICT. LOWES had 3 F's 5 days a week all year all weather. Tough is a tire company MU-2J slid off
If it had been marketed correctly and sold with flight training it would have been a King Air killer.. Year model for year model I'll take an MU2 over King Air any day of the week, and a King Air is a great airplane.
Had a door limit switch fail on my F model going into KLIT on a two day Lowes Co trip. Tower says are you needing assistance. I say nope just 252 cranks and 3 greens !! No problem . Opppps this was in 79.
