The term mucocele was derived from a latin word , mucu stands for mucus and coele means a cavity. Therefore mucocele is defined as a mucus-filled cyst that may appear in the oral cavity. It’s the seventeenth most common salivary gland lesion of the oral cavity.
Mucoceles are of two types, namely the mucus extravasation phenomenon or mucus escape reaction and mucus retention cyst also called salivary duct cyst or sialocyst.
The mucus extravasation phenomenan or mucus escape reaction are associated with minor salivary glands and are formed secondary to rupture of excretory duct of the gland. This rupture of the salivary gland duct leads to consequent spillage of saliva from the duct into the connective tissue around the gland. The mucous becomes walled off and causes a cyst like swelling but are not lined by an epithelium, that’s why they are called pseudocysts or false cysts.
The spillage of mucous in extravasation phenomenon may result from local trauma to the salivary gland ducts. Although in many cases there may be no known history of trauma.
On the other hand mucus retention cysts are formed secondary to obstruction of the duct which leads to accumulation of saliva either within the gland or within its duct. Prolonged obstructions within the gland or duct causes further fluid accumulation and results in swelling. This salivary obstruction leading to development of a cyst might result from calculus formation, scarring and obstruction from mucin plug. Unlike mucus extravasation phenomenon, mucus retention cyst is a true cyst, meaning that its lined up by a layer of salivary epithelium.

Ma'am I'm watching this 10 days before my university exam, I'm very displeased by the RU-vid algorithm that i could not find your videos. I feel blessed to be able to watch these videos where you have explained everything so conceptually. Please keep on making such videos. Thank you, sincerely a struggling dental student.

Mine is about 6mm. It started tiny about 2mm then as i would accidentally bite my lip it caused more trauma to it and would grow with scar tissue. Had it for about a year and I'm having it removed next week. Yay! 🤗 It cost between 700 to 800 to have it removed. Your dentists can refer you to an oral/maxillofacial surgeon. Health insurance will usually cover most of the cost but i have a high deductible insurance sooo it's basically out of pocket. 😋

Very informative, thankyou so much. So, from clinical appearance, is there any differences between extravasation and retention mucoceles? Thankyou..

Mucocele most commonly caused by lip biting, but can also develop from an ulcer. Usually nothing to worry about, but it is always worth getting an opinion from a consultant if you are worried. Things to avoid: Acidic foods, this is fruit such as oranges, grapes, berries. Acidic drinks, even tea and coffee. Hot drinks and overly hot food. Spicy food, even black pepper. Eat just once a day to allow plenty of healing time, and do salt gargling 4-6 times a day (Make a saturated salt solution in warm water and gargle, making sure you are immersing the mucocele). Its also beneficial to drink Neem and Turmeric in warm water empty stomach first thing in the morning. This should cure the issue, and avoid surgical removal. Make sure you follow the above until the mucocele hasn't fully healed to make sure it doesn't come back. Do let me know if this works for you. Vimal
