A very exciting milestone... mudding & taping has begun @ my fixer upper house!! Jay showed me the ropes and we got busy mudding one of the bedrooms!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Follow along on my channel if you want to see DIY projects, renovating a house on a budget, and I am sure a lot of craziness along the way! I'm just a girl with a drill and a dream.

Jay looks pretty good at doing this. I know from experience that it is not as easy as it looks. Mudding drywall absolutely sucks!!! You will save yourself a lot of time and aggravation if you hire a professional. They can knock this process out in no time. Money well spent.

Please don’t take my comment as a negative towards anyone. I just based this job off my own experiences and wish I had hired a professional. I trust in Jay’s abilities and Abby’s abilities and desire to learn. I admire everyone that has done work during this process. No ill will towards anyone is intended.

Don’t try to fill the joints with mud that’s the tapes job. Day 1, 1 Very thin coat, 2 apply the tape with a thin coat of mud. Day 2 thin coat with wider blade. Day 3 thin coat with wider blade. Day 4 very little sanding.

Abby you should do your bedroom, all three coats and then primer paint. This way you learn how to mud. See your mistakes and can calculate time spent. Then make the decision on whether to hire tapers for the rest. A poor tape job really makes all the previous good work look bad and you can never make the paint look good. You’ve had good tradesman help with other projects on the house and they have taught you good skills so don’t underestimate the skills of tapers.

Slanted ceilings/ceilings are especially difficult to get good results. It takes skill and experience for sure, texturing everything helps cover up but not nice.

I agree completely. You may get 3 coats of mud on and think you're good to go- then the primer comes out and that's the real Truth teller. We haven't got to paint with any sheen in it, there will be no hiding a bad mud job! Teach yourself on a full room first- start to finish- if your set on not hiring it out.

The biggest rule of thumb, "DO NOT OVERWORK THE MUD" It gets too dry to work. Love the "look" Jay gave you when you said cool. He very much understands that this will get old real quick. Just wait until you have to sand everything (please DO NOT forget your masks) and do it all again and possibly a third time. Have fun😮😊

To all the naysayers, not everyone can afford to hire everything done. And that's not the point . She wants to do this on her own with guidance. People have been taking care of their own homes forever. I built my own house with no help and learned as I went. Let her learn as she goes. If it's not perfect when it's done, then so what. There's pride in saying I did it myself.

It's looking good just a few pointers. I'm definitely not a professional marine and taping. But I have done a little a quick swipe on this. First and even the second passed over the nail holes is all you need. Put some filler, swipe it off next one also. On any of your flat joints. I noticed a couple times especially the one on the ceiling. There you took your tape across 2 sheets of the gyprock. It was one more sheet of giprock wide and you ripped your tape off. That might not seem like a big deal, but that will create a high spot. As you're putting the filter on when you start on a scene. You should go that full scene without ripping your tape and then put your and onuno's rigid corners. You should always have the edge of your knife on the outside of that corner. Because you're working too that and that will save you when you're feathering it out from coat to coat and I would imagine that j. Ay will use what's called Durban. 90 in those wider gaps. And that's a good idea, and you probably would also want to use what is called mesh tape. Rather than the paper tape it gets more reinforcement

You should do a mudding party with family and friends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Jesus) Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; Romans 3:25-31 King James Version 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: 30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Abby , no offense but taping sheetrock is a process . Watching what been shown so far is painfull. Im a professional drywall and builder and i will give you some pointers . I wish i could travel to you but im in Southcoast Massachusetts , not exactly neighbors ! . First thing , that green lid mud is garbage , shrinks to much and best left in the trash . Buy the red or black lid ,called pro form. Open the bucket and stir the compound with a mixing drill and mud paddle. Add about 1cup of water and mix . Before applying compound you must remove any broken or lose paper ,sheetrock . Fill in all big gaps with durobond 45 , it comes in a bag. Mix to peanut butter consistency . Apply where needed on all big gaps ,holes etc. Let it set , it should set in about 20 to 30 minutes. Apply compound about the width of the taping knife on all but joints first , a but joint is a vertical flat joint ,where 2 sheets come together. They do not have beveled seam or joint, do them first . Then the" flats " those are the horizontal joints with the bevel . Then the inside corners last . Leave the corner bead alone for now. Let me know when you get that far ,and i will guide you to the next steps . Hope that helps . You got this !🙂

If your still in the process of mudding & taping, here's a few tips: That drywall mud should be mixed with a mixing paddle to get the consistency for a smooth creamy state. Add a small amount of Fix-All to your pan. This will help to harden the mud and helps preventin cracks on tape and nails. Crosshatch your nails to remove excess mud to eliminate extra sanding work. Might require a second pass but eliminates un-needed sanding, keeps things clean. Use the proggression of mudding blades to help feather the material, including inside & outside corner trowels. I like using the mesh tape which provides easier application, has more strength and blends well when feathering the walls and joints. Thinner applications are best for smoother walls, does require multiple applications but pays off at the end, thicker applicatiobs will require more work to blemd. As I'm watching you work, might be a good idea to watch a RU-vid channel for technique

Wow! That was a great! and impressive start. I could already see you getting it down pat when you went to the other side of the room your strokes were becoming more efficient as you went from experimenting and learning to doing. Looks like your catching onto the taping real well, some guys thinen their mud just a little bit also there is taping mud and filling mud, the taping mud has a little more glue in it and I have heard of the old timers adding a little glue if the mud seems a little less sticky, but the general purpose compound seems to do it all. I was looking at you doing this and thinking about the journey to this point, some of your viewers will be crying, it was certainly touching to see you do this , also after some folks saying not to, I was like , yes!! Go Abby go! Anyways....Jay, so funny...glance..."looks good.., like a pro" Yep 3 to 4 coats with sanding in-between, sometimes you do not need to sand in-between coat 1 and 2, thinner coats, but more coats, sometimes stronger and more stable. When you sand the 3rd coat, it looks cool and you will like that smooth look like B4 painting a car, sweet. Baby you are getting it, as you say..."pumped!". So Proud!...Mic Drop. :-)

In my opinion, this is the worse part! You will be so glad when this is over. You and Jay have come a long way, and your Mom & Dad.

Glad to hear you're going to cover up all the exposed insulation behind the bank of drawers. You could use 1/4" plywood instead of dry wall, maybe cheaper, certainly easier and quicker. The corners, where the dry wall meets, for the bank of drawers, consider metal corner protection. Those corners will get lots of wear & tear with constantly opening and closing them.

By the time you get that room mudded and taped you will want to hire someone to finish the rest of the house.... it's a alot of work...

You're doing a fantastic job! It will be worth it to take your time on the mudding, and the more practice you have the better you'll get.

Some advice, please start in your closest and inside the big spaces, you need lots of practice before doing the visible surfaces. Seriously!! Please consider hiring a professional because every little error shows even when sanded and painted and it will drive you insane.

You're doing a great job, both of you! You'll only get better too. Keep up the good work Some people forget it would cost a lot to hire professionals. It'll still turn out great.

Yes Abby, taping is an art,you can't just throw mud at a wall, because eventually your going to have to sand it out smooth and the more you put on the harder it is to sand out,you don't want to have to use a belt sander to get it smooth. Better off hiring the pros to do it in half the time and a much better looking finish job, stick to painting.

I would pay for professionals to complete the mud and tape. They would do a much faster and more professional job and less stressful on you and Jay.

We generally use a taping bango. You apply tape and mud at the same time. One person pulls tape the other strikes. Is goes fast. And we use thinner mud.

You should add some water to your mud, so that it looks like a pile of whipped cream. If you use it straight out of the bucket you get a lot of air bubbles in it when you apply it.

I believe i recalled that wrong. we did do it the way Jay is. I hope you have a sanding machine; doing it by hand with sandpaper is not fun.
