Whoever could have last had that in their mouth?! Were they envy of their friends? Whose pocket did it fall out of?! Lost treasures to me but old rubbish to the people who discarded them over a century ago. Old bottles settle in the mud and become taken over by barnacles. The last person who touched them has disappeared into the mists of time. But when I find personal objects I cant help wondering who last touched them or who held them. Who took a spoonful of Dr Grace's pectoral or cough mixture to cure their cold? Did it work?! I doubt it somehow... And whoever treated themselves to a resplendent clay tobacco pipe in the shape of a cockerel?! Just what was the poison that was contained in the blue cobalt bottle which washed up at my feet? All these questions. It's food for the imagination. Whoever threw these objects away could never have thought that one day we would be searching around and finding delight in their rubbish.

More stylish smoking with a chicken than standard vaping perhaps? There is a Japanese story which may help with the I-broke-my- own- stuff-accidently Blues: There was once a Zen priest who took great pride with a special tea bowl that he showed to a young acolyte. Unfortunately in a moment of distraction while showing it he dropped it and broke it! He immediately became very upset. The acolyte watching this said: 'No need to get upset. It was time for the bowl to die'. I have found this idea very helpful emotionally for those who are obsessed with keeping stuff undamaged on their watch, like myself. Things, like people, eventually die and the time for that is simply not in our hands (literally). I am not always sure this story works but I try it anyway! You are a wonderful film maker.

Hi, Nicola. Susan here from Shelburne. We DON'T have snow drops and daffodils blooming here! Rather, we have had storms for the last 4 days (no school for Thursday or Friday), with whiteout conditions today. Still, it was lovely to watch your video, and I was especially thrilled to see the pipe bowl. As you know, I love a challenge, and I did find a Frederick Parnell in the 1911 census, listed as a tobacco clay pipe manufacturer. Aged 29, he had a wife Anne (30), and two children -Alexander was 3, and Maggie was 2. they also had a 17 year old servant. They were living on Victoria Street, East Ham. Frederick was listed as an employer, so it wasn't a one-man business. When I brought up his records for 1901, Frederick was living with his parents in Essex, West Ham, Plaistow (that's how it's listed as a region) where he was a grocer's assistant. His dad was a coachman. Sadly, the next info I could find was the 1939 register, where Annie was living with her children, but was a widow, living on her own means. Annie outlived Alexander, and neither he nor Maggie ever married. Someone was financially astute, however, as Maggie died with a net worth of almost 124000 pounds.

I worked at a hospital as a porter, it had been a naval hospital during WWII, in the old theatre suite was loads of unused poison bottles still in the boxes. We were told to get rid of them all. Poison bottles were also ribbed so that you could tell they contained poison just by feel in the dark. 29 could be the The 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot

Always such great music to go with Great Tideline Adventures! Great finds as well. So much history in a broken piece of pottery that gives it very special value. Bits and pieces used by our ancestors that contain many vibrations of times gone by. So Amazing the Thames and all those interesting places you adventure in! Excellent drone footage -- and it's neat to see the islands/shoals/marshes around the two forts -- probably very different now compared to back when they were in use. It says a lot for how well and strong they were built that they are still so much intact, having been decommissioned after World War I -- and not really being kept up since then. They look like they should last, uncared for, for many more years....

I grew up in Texas, where Lipton tea was the only brand of tea we knew and iced tea was the only kind of tea we drank. I had one of my first cultural awakenings in college when the first English person I ever met repeatedly referred to it as ‘Crapton Tea.’

Bless your soul! What a super unique and interesting hobby! I grew up in Chicago suburbs and spent my days kicking around the desplaines River and tributaries, up to the Chicago river back down to the Mississippi fishing, catch and release, and taking in the beauty the forest preserves offer. Helping any creatures critters or people in need. Mud Mudlarking, I love it! I've never been across the pond but I'm adding this to my bucket list should ever be in Europe!

Love the pottery shards with logo's and / writing. A soak overnight in 50 / 50 household bleach and water will bring them up like new and the colour will stand out clearly.

I was pondering if squirrel would be alright in that storm, so was happy seeing it wind surfing the bird feeder at the end.😊 Always enjoyable to see your adventures out on the River Medway. I love your show. I'm in Oklahoma, USA. A while back, on May 22, you found a pocket knife that looked like a lady's leg. That's exactly what it was meant to be. I collect pocket knives, and that design has been around for a while and made by a number of companies. The maker's name is usually on the shank of the blade. I think my grandfather had the mudlarking find of all times, though. He was quail hunting along the banks of the Washita River in the 1940s. He stepped on a mound of soft mud along the bank and felt something hard underfoot. His birddog was milling around as he extracted what turned out to be a musket made sometime before the American Revolution. Western Oklahoma wouldn't be trod on by white Americans for another half century. As near as we can figure, grandfather found an obsolete firearm sold to Indians out west as improved rifles we being bought by American settlers. The old muskets were traded to gun sellers who sell the less desirable musket to plains Tribes. I love your program.

Oh my fur and feathers! I've just stumbled across a Cockerell pipe. Only the head depicted though. It's detailing is phenomenal. It's broken on one side but perfect on the other, no stem. Lovely video as always ❤

I have a fun book recommendation. The Raven Spell by Luanne Smith is about a pair of sisters who happen to be witches. They spend the early morning hours mudlarking for precious objects to sell in their second-hand shop. Some nifty magic is involved.

The Thames toy adoption plan makes you just like King Moonracer, (from the Rankin/Bass Christmas production of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). King Moonracer was in charge of collecting up and giving sanctuary to all the unwanted toys on his Island of Misfit Toys. But, of course, you are Pipe Queen Nicola Moonracer. Anyway, the King did ask Santa for his help in distributing all the unwanted toys to any boy or girl who would love and care for them. So, good luck to you! I will definitely volunteer to house a critter.

Bummer on the Dr Grace's bottle...I think the sun has taken it's toll on that glass. That's where most all bottles that style break. Fabulous finds as always. Absolutely LOVE your collections in cabinets. I could stare at them for hours conjuring up stories in my mind of people from the past using them. Squirrel's tail flapping in the wind made me smile. So cute xx Teresa 🇦🇺 ❤

Lovely, perfect blue bottle, envy set in! I prefer the poison bottle to the cockerel. By the way Cobalt is properly pronounced Co_bolt (I was a chemist in a factory making chemicals until I retired). Not Balt.

What a Fantastic video, cram-packed with treasures. Nic, you started this vid off with something I adore and that would have to include the person that sported it between his lips (giggle). Aww I Love your precious, tideline art toy. I have a miniature of the clear triangle shaped, with the rounded off edges, that is a poison bottle. Perhaps your left-behind, large bottle contained something not to be taken, made by the same company as my mini replica of yours? Hmm .... I'm wondering if you wanted to preserve the color that a clay pipe is when pulled out of the mud, if you could? Some of them are such terrific colors. A Cool way to display your unique, assorted pottery pieces of the some-what smaller size, is to apply a fairly strong magnet to the backside of it, with (hot melt glue because it's not necessarily permanent). Then arrange them onto a framed (to protect you from sharp edges) sheet of stainless steel and hang on the wall of your art studio. The pieces can also be re-arranged as others are added. Thank You. A Wonderful escape if only for a few minutes. What a Beautiful place. I'm in P.A USA. I'VE been going to flee markets etc. looking for a Cobalt Blue bottle. It will happen someday. Glad you found some. No bottle dumps around here. When it warms up I'll go to the rivers edge.

What fabulous finds in this video Nicola!!! That larger poison bottle is incredible! Also the cockerel pipe bowl is as well!! I bet Si was jealous of those awesome bottles you found. lol I hope things are going well with the little mommy who is carrying your precious grandchild??
