Drum sounds are incredibly subjective but they’re also contextually dependent. That solo drum sound you fell in love with on RU-vid isn’t necessarily the best fit when it comes to mixing along with other instruments for a performance, recorded or otherwise. This week we’re exploring some inexpensive options available for different types of tom muffling depending on your needs. And remember, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using muffling as needed…

Caleb, the Floor Tom tuning is sooooo elusive to me. I have Cheapo Gammon kit. I've tried many different batter and reso heads: G1s clear, G2 coated, and now EC2s ( which work well on the 12 and 13 inch rack toms with 2 moongels on the batter heads, but still can't get that nice dooooo, doooo sound on the Floor Tom. I'm going to try the cloth on the batter head.

@@Chiroman527 I've gotten to the point where I don't worry too much about getting my drums to sound like ones i've heard on the internet. Even when they don't use any eq or compression, I just don't think it's feasible to make my drums sound like a recording.

I've had a cheap-o set for more than ten years at this point and i was of the same mentality until i discovered that pitch app that, i am pretty sure, i picked up from this channel. now i tune to notes and even if it flunks music theory it at least gives the drums a "clean" sound that can sound recorded behind the kit. its not a complete success but its impressive to me that just tuning brought my kit to life. i really do think the awesome sounds are hidden in the nerdy details for those of us without the money to throw at it.

Happy to be here for the start of season three! I also sometimes use gaff on my reso heads. If I’m playing a quiet gig and want to have lots of tone but a short note, I tune the top head higher than the bottom and put a small piece of gaff on the bottom. It’s a cool sound! Intend not to like the focus and attack an e ring provides-it’s a way around that issue for me.

What you do with the gaffe tape, I do with moon gels (and similar products). A whole moon gel was always waaaaay too much dampening for me (unbelievable to me that there are people that use multiple gels on one drum...). So I started to cut the gels into small pieces. Somewhere around 1 cm in width and maybe 2,5 cm in length, something like that.That way it is much easier to switch the positioning on the drum compared to gaffe tape. And and somehow a small piece makes the tom sound much beefier while retaining all the the attack and also some overtones. Placing a small piece of gel directly under the microphone can have a huuuuge effect. I always put the piece as close to the edge of the drum as possible and if I want more muffling I just move towards the center. One small piece on snare and rack toms, two to four on the floor toms. On the snare it takes the ringing away that you would sometimes cut out with a EQ. I found that to be the best way do muffle in minimal ways because you can control the amount of muffling so well. And also that way the gels last for a loooong time since I only need small pieces.

Thanks guys! Couple things jumped out at me: 1) The difference between open, e-rings and tape was barely perceptible to my ears under your close mics, which surprised me. The difference seems more pronounced when I'm sitting at my kit. That was even more true when you played a fill in a groove as opposed to individual hits. 2) The "hankie" scenario sounds terrible to me on individual hits, I like singing toms. But in the groove, it sounded really good!
@ajpain6673
@ajpain6673 4 года назад
I think this is a really good point.. When youre sitting there messing with your drums for hours trying to get them to sound just right, you gotta remember in the context of playing the full kit live especially with a band you can barely hear the difference. Studio may well be a different matter.

1. Muffling is loading mass to the drum 2. Whether that mass is coupled or decoupled from the drum head is important. 3. Non-coupled mass (like a wallet) bounces off the head with harder strikes, providing a sort of gated dry sound, where the drums resonate fully, but for a much shorter duration as the mass falls back onto the head and muffles it. 4. Coupled mass provides a permanent muffling of overtones. Usually the higher overtones get muffled first, so coupled mass produces a darker as well as dryer sound.

Cody , I've Been watching a lot of your videos lately and i really enjoy how you simplify things instead of using complicated "drum speak" and confusing techniques. I was laughing because i use bandanas over my toms and roll one up on my snare (1/2) .... when i'm playing at home cuz i like the "flat" studio sound .... and i didn't know it was actually a "thing" lol. I thought "if people see this they will think i'm crazy" .... also found that the cotton ball thing really works very well too along with some tape on the batter head. I found if you experiment , you can come up with whatever type of sound you want to get. I have my drums to a point now where they sound like they are mic'd up in a studio ... when i'm actually playing them wide open with muffling !!!! Anyway, just want to say again that i love your vids. Keep up the good work brother

What I found really interesting is if I close my eyes and focus on the final comparison I hear the switch between the techniques immediately in how the rest of the kit, especially the snare ring out. It almost has a more profound effect on the snare than the toms themselves. I like and use e rings because they are pretty fool proof and warm, but that gaff tape setup you did was the only method in this video that seemed to increase the definition of the toms, giving them more punch and a short but linear falloff that allowed them to express their full sound while quickly getting out of the way of subsequent notes. good stuff.

(Un-tested as of yet because I don't have access to my kit) I think I've come to the realisation that I prefer the sound of coated heads for toms. I've always been a 2-ply clear head one moongel kinda guy but it's still been a little 'too-much' if you catch my drift, even though I'm a hard hitting rock player. I've recorded on coated heads and they sounded GREAT and listened to so many things on here and elsewhere with coated where the toms were just 'the sound'.

Sadly drum makers because of cost, stopped installing the Internal mufflers at the factory on drums back in the late 70's. Many younger drummers don' t like them because the ones they have seen in their lifetime were old and not maintained at all, so they rattled, So in their mind that's how they all worked, Which is not true at all. All you have to do i Maintain them, Just tighten the screw and lock washer and nut down and/or replace the felt if it's worn, and you can Dial in the exact muffled sound, The Gretsch Drum company really made them right, they were all metal with a round felt muffler installed on the top and bottom heads and they really worked well especially on the the Bass drum. Lots of time a mid frequency ring can come from the bottom head as well as the top, Rings will do the job but you cant really get the exact amount of muffling, you get what it gives you, Not so with the internal mufflers. I have a 60's Ludwig kit and they are built into the kit and they work great, Just tighten and oil them once in a while and they last, Mine are 60 years old and work fine. Modern Drummer did an article on them and the drum company's said drilling into the head compromised the shell, That was not the truth, The real reason was cost, for Parts and drilling It was about the bottom line. The holes drilled into the drums required for the internal mufflers were tiny. It was small screw with a lock washer and nut that held them in place.
@adamtolley5621
@adamtolley5621 4 года назад
Cost might be a justifiable factor presently if this feature has fallen heavily out of favor. I know that personally, possibly very incorrectly, associate internal muffling with cheap sets that have bad shell and component acoustics to really dampen all the bad overtones and rattles. I also don't like the idea of something coupling a nicely resonating shell and the head of the drum in some secondary secondary way that might disrupt the natural, air-space interactions of those two surfaces. Put simply a lot of people who have this, again possibly incorrect, perception won't want to pay money for that feature. But that doesn't make your comment any less useful, thanks for giving me something to think about the next time I build or tune a kit.
@richardbartolo2890
@richardbartolo2890 4 года назад
@@adamtolley5621 Thanks for the feed back Adam, I feel this way about mufflers because I have a dislike for mid frequency overtones. Every drummer I am sure has the sound he desires in his mind and ear. Because that mid frequency tone drove me crazy the internal mufflers really removed the over ring. As long as you didn't over use it, I especially loved the ones Gretsch installed on their Bass drums, They also use to sell an 6 or 8 inch muffler that attached to the bass drum rim and head, It did a good job. Some kits need the over ring I know Jazz drummers love that over ring , and it works well for them. I guess what it boils down to is what sound works for you and is it enhancing the music or disabling it.

Great episode. Full on nerd question here. Some drummers (I think I heard Gavin Harrison say this once) prefer to have muffling that’s radially symmetrical around the edge of the head, meaning equal in all directions around the head. So the e-ring definitely does that but your gaff tape example didn’t. Do you think that has an impact on tone if you think about it in that way? Perhaps smaller pieces of tape symmetrical around the edge instead of 1-2 larger pieces?

Thanks! Yes, asymmetrical muffling we will impact the tone but if you're adjusting it based on how it sounds then you'll likely end up with something that you're happy with. At the end of the day, it may be asymmetrical but if it sounds good, that's all that counts. I would place smaller amounts of tape around the entirety of the edge of a drumhead unless that's the sound I'm going for. In a way, the asymmetrical placement can be more effective (especially with greater mass) similar to adjusting a single tension rod. Cheers! -Ben

Cody, what are the Batter heads you are using? G2s coated?
@fabiocacchioli9074

I don't really like much muffling on my drums, especially when I'm using drum heads which have muffling or tone control already like a Remo cs dot, powerstroke 3 or an Evans power centre, genera, genera hd on any of my snare drums. Maybe if I'm using an Ambassador on a steel shell. Nothing on my Toms. Maybe a small piece on my floor tom if I'm using just an Ambassador or Emperor. Nothing at all in my bass drum. I like my drums as open as possible.

Hi. A while back, you lined the bearing edge of your snare with gaff tape. I wonder what affect that would have on the tom's? I have used old worn out socks, there's one on my snare right now, suppose it's just like the bandana method!
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 4 года назад
To be clear, we put the tape on the head, NOT the bearing edge. We don't advocate putting tape on the edge itself. We also recommend that more for metal edges, which is why we haven't done it with these toms.

Wide open with small dabs of moon jail proportionate to Tom size for me! Otherwise… GaF on house kits etc. don’t know what it is but, for me, oh rings gather static electricity and I end up wearing them on my clothes are over my head seriously! Can’t stand the things great job welcome back to reality cheers… Keith!

Any kind of help pad or foam? I've used moongels and drumdots, sometimes even on floor tom bottoms. Also, I think foam rings work better since you don't get that snare like flap from the plastic ring. Too much, then cut it in half or 4ths.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 4 года назад
Wouldn't really use a pad or foam on the batter head but we've covered a couple of internal/reso muffling techniques in previous episodes. Haven't had any issues with flapping/audible sound of any sort from the E-rings but that's dependent on the hoops not being undersized. -Ben

How about playing your ride as your snare, your snare as your bass drum, your bass drum as your hi hat, and your hi hat as floor tom. And set up left handed.

I NEVER hear anyone suggesting muffling toms on the inside by putting a handkerchief or something in there, as we do routinely with bass drums. Why wouldn't it work? Has anyone tried it? Is it just a ridiculous idea? (Full disclosure: I have not tried it myself. I though I'd get some feedback before going to the trouble. I do realize that it would be an inconvenient solution to undo.)

Wait what is that flanger wah effect in the Tom resonance @ 8:14 how is that natural
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 2 года назад
It's not so much a flange or wah but rather the coexistence of the multiple tones present in creating the full drum sound. The batter head and reso head are each tuned to different pitches and then the full sound of the drum is actually a third pitch created by the phase relationship of the two heads.

@@SoundsLikeADrum ohh ok, makes sense... but Is this due to a particular type of micing used here that these sounds cannot be prevented? Because I normally dont hear these in isolated drum tracks. I'm just curious....

Anyone else hear how the snare detuned at 05:44? Interesting.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 4 года назад
It didn’t actually detune, Cody just didn’t hit a rimshot for that one hit so the perceived pitch was lower. The rest of the hits afterward are at the same pitch as he’s consistently hitting rimshots.

Yep! We like to use a bandana between the cymbals. You can experiment with various configurations. If you need more muffling on the top cymbal, try running a flag of fabric on the opposing side through the clutch.

What are you using for overhead mics??
@SoundsLikeADrum

We don’t actually have microphones placed in a traditional overhead location but rather a single AKG C414 just over Cody’s shoulder at ear height and distance from the drums in order to provide a realistic representation of the sound heard at the drums.
