Can't understand why there are 254 thumbs down. This is a piece of sports history. Even if you didn't like Ali you have to be grateful these clips have been posted.
The polish guy had a hell of a record though, Polish champion 11 times, several gold medals, medaled at the olympics all 3 times he participated, & fought 350 fights; he won 334, drew 2 and lost 14. that is one hell of a record
I think the guys in the past with laugh at today guys went over a hundred rounds crazy even the workers they have machines today back then they didn't have that old tools hand tools
,,,, that's what Pietrzykowski's wife said - Some people told my husband that he must have been disappointed that he didn’t win the gold, but he always replied that he was very happy with silver. He respected who he was fighting and followed Ali’s later fights. He always spoke highly of him.
Zbigniew Pietrzykowski had knocked out arguably the greatest amateur boxer ever in Lazlo Papp, was at his physical peak at 25 years of age, was a brilliant southpaw stylist/technician who at the time had over 200 bouts under him and had won and competed in the top tournaments around the world yet it is a testament to the GREATNESS of Muhammad Ali that he was able defeat this brilliant fighter whilst he was ONLY 18 years old, when he had still not developed his man strength and was still growing and the fact that he had far less experience than his southpaw opponent, simply amazes me. Muhammad Ali RIP Zbigniew Pietrzykowski RIP
it seemed to me that Zigzy ran out of gas in this fight........but he gave Ali a run for his money in the first round though........2nd round not as much...and of course 3rd round he was unable to throw any punches.........
joshmart11 Polish, in its stupid nationalism, only looks at and consumes Polish, even if it has been American for 60 years, glad Cassius Clay put a correction on them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6aX43N4MwAw.html
mike rockfort undefeated doesn’t really mean much. When you push yourself like Ali did and keep fighting when you’re slowing down and getting old, still win but lose a few, doesn’t really count as being the best in your prime.
@@fr0styy156 Ali was the best he had iron chin he was only knocked down maybe four times in his whole career got right back up he was never knocked out cold and his last two fights 1980 with Larry Holmes in 81 he already had Parkinson's Larry could knock them down they had to stop the fight and Trevor berbick he went 12 rounds lost a decision but still he took his best a 39 year-old Ali with Parkinson's nobody could not come out the best of all times Rocky Marciano has a record of 49 and he's the best for that but the best fighter is Muhammad Ali rest in peace he will always be the greatest in boxing history
I saw Ziggy on the shaw "This is your life" Ali episode. And searched for this fight and here it is. I see from comments that he recently died. R.I.P gentle man.
Good fight, Ali is my favorite super hero of all time! But i will give it to this other guy as well.. he had it in him! no backing off or down at anytime.. much respect for both of them!
@@MAILER-DAEMON You can see Ali was smother and polished, in the pros another round would have been the end of him. In amateur you have not much time and Ali didn't overwhelm him or start coming on until mid 2nd round
In that day people dont know that guy who won the Gold would actually the most iconic boxer in olympic history and 52 years later he touched the olympic flag infront of many audience(2012 london Olympics)
Mr. Ali was already a master boxer at 18 years old he was fighting and extremely heavy-handed fighter that could end a fight with one punch. Mr Ali was slipping punches with ease so well that unless you've watched a lot of fights you think the guy just missed. Slipping punches is one of the most difficult techniques to learn and he seems to have mastered it at an early age he truly was a great champion inside and outside the ring.
Perfectly said...Another attribute he had was the back-peddle while hitting his opponent. That technique carried him for many years...because it frustrated and wore fighters down.
I had never seen the full fight before; thanks for posting it! It wasn't as one-sided as I thought. Sad to learn the Ziggy has passed. He was a great sportsman.
When Zigzy starts punching, pushing Ali back and hitting him hard, the announcer talks about Alis' childhood. Black and white TV really reminds me of the start of American media.
Ali said he tossed his gold medal into the Ohio river. Due to racism when he got back home. A tragic, bitter sweet end, to something [Gold medal victory] he worked hard and truly fought for, since the age of 12. Thanks for posting, I'd never seen this entire fight before.
He said it but it did not happen. He used the story for mileage about racism. He was in raucous living conditions many coming and going it was lost or stolen or accidently thrown out. All friends and relatives testfied as such and said "at no time did he say to any of us at the time or over the years that he threw it into the river. also had that been the case the medal quite easily could have found by divers even if it was sunk in silt with metal detectors or many methods
BS. When Ali came back from Zaire he said I want every black person in America to thank God for slavery. I just came from Africa and you don't want to be living there. I wanted to hug him.
Compared to his godly skills in his future fights, in this fight he looks almost human his skills almost matching his opponent , just imagine how much he trained to reach that level we know and love
I saw him fight in '59 at the Cow Palace in S.F. I was 9 and I told my father 'that guy is the best fighter I've ever seen'. My father said the same. We were both right.
unbelievably I can actually remember watching this on TV, not so much the fight but the whole family gathered around the TV cheering Clay on, it must be one of if not the first memory of watching anything on TV, TV was so new back then and the Olympic games so big it was a huge event, unlike today with 1000's of options for viewing, back then we had only two options, BBC TV & ITV, nothing else, radio wasn't much better, Luxemburg and caroline were the main two stations, BBC R1 R2 R3 R4 didn't exist yet just the BBC light show which popular music mixed with comedy and chat shows, RIP Ali one of the very first superstars of sport, RIP Zigzy, he fought in 3 Olympic games taking home medals from them all,
Awesome fight. Really cool that this was uploaded for people to watch. Never thought I would ever get to see Ali's gold medal match in the Rome Olympics. Both fighters were REALLY good. You don't see amateur boxers in the Olympics like this, any more. The only boxer I've seen, who was up there with these two, in the Olympics, was the super heavyweight gold medalist in 1992, Roberto Balado, a Cuban dude. That dude was GOOD. Course he died in a car crash 2-3 years after he won gold. Ali was this promising fighter back then. If you see a polished amateur, it's not always a good sign. That's why you could kinda imagine what Ali mighta thought of his performance in this final fight. Some of those rights were really really weak. You win the gold, you take off the 'amateur' training wheels, you're a new man AND a new boxer. Knowing what we know of Ali now, as the 'Greatest' boxer of all time, it didn't even look like he had any extra pressure on him against Pietrzykowski. But he probably did.
First two rounds could have gone either way, I split them. Third round dominated by Ali and as someone said if it goes to a 4th Ali probably would have stopped him.
wow never saw his gold medal match, glimmers of Cassius' future greatness, the polish fighter was skilled and tough, great match. Wonder how much quicker the Polish fighter may have been if there wasn't a 7 year age spread?
In the book of mohammed Ali it says. The first 2 rounds was like a draw for them both. But 3th round ali was better so he got the prize. I hope you understand me
Gdyby Pietrzykowski zachowal ten sam poziom do konca, mialby wieksza szanse na mniej ciezkich ciosow Ali’ego, gdyz mialby wieksza rezerwe kondycji do conajmniej blokowania ciosow Ali’ego.Jednak trener Pietrzykows-kiego popchnal go w II-giej przerwie do zwiekszonego ataku i to byl koniec Pietrzykowskiego. W III rundzie na samym poczatku przeforsowal, zaczal naciskac z atakami,a tym samym slabnac, wowczas Ali bedac wyzszym i majac dluzsze rece zadal pare panchow i ogluszyl/obezwladnil Pietrzykowskiego. Polak odslonil sie, zaczal przyjmowac bez kontroli Ali’ego uderzenia, zaczal walczyc chaotycznie i to byl koniec naszego zawodnika.
Was thinking the same thing. Was I watching a different fight? 1st rd. was easily Ziggy's I thought. 2nd was close and could have gone either way but maybe the second half Ali pulled it out. 3rd rd. Ali won easily.
You could see the excitement an happiness in ALI's eyes as the gold medal was placed around his neck..job well done he earned it that night..southpaws can be complicated fighters!!
Thats normal...your testosterone and energy is at its peak age 18-21 u should be youth and athletic. Especially a black man. Look at the greats. All were very young
Muhammad Ali the greatest boxer of all time, not just the greatest heavyweight I believe Ali is the P4P king, the quickest heavyweight ever I don't see Mayweather, Armstrong, Robinson, Langford, Pacman better than him
Amazing fight, with all the respect to Ali for his future accomplishments and his age at the time of this fight, I think Ziggy won first two rounds, and the commentator’s comments were one sided favoring his countryman. I think Ziggy should have won the Gold medal, but it wasn’t meant to be. Both of the fighters established friendship to the end of their lives, respecting each others ability to fight in the ring without the bad shows we see in today’s boxing shows. One of the best fighters, RIP Ali & Ziggy.
Wes Inman -I agree, the last minute of the 3rd round, Ali dazed Ziggy. He won 5:0 from judges. But perhaps I’m comparing the way they scoring olympics now, total number of punches landed, it might have looked differently. Nevertheless, the 3rd round was the “preview” of the Great Ali as the undisputed King of the Ring. 😀
I absolutely agree with your scoring. Although Ali looked great, most of his punches missed, and most of Ziggy's landed. However, maybe the strange decision by the judges did the world a great favour by allowing Ali to progress the GOAT boxer and a wonderful and entertaining person.
A great start for the greatest of all time, it's interesting to watch him when he was that young and throwing some punches that he obviously abandoned the older he got, still no doubt he was a master even way back then.
Ali never fought such an evasive fighter after this victory. On the contrary, Ali himself was always the one who managed to keep a distance to his opponents. Ali was a counterpuncher by nature. He never had to chase his opponents, instead he just had to wait till they got tired and outboxed before he started to seriously fight back.
