He surely did (set him straight), and was right! You wanna ask questions but not answer a simple question (how old are you) I ask, which would help me to understand why you asked what you asked
Ali felt the reporter was insulting his intelligence by asking him a racially or socio-economically sensitive loaded question. Ali was simply going to make a point about intelligence and age and experience to explain why the guy wasn't gonna get the answer he wanted. But the guy refused to answer Ali's question simply because he knew the point Ali was going to make was going to expose the loaded nature of his question. And he tried to cloak it inside a claim that Ali should be the subject matter, not him. But his refusal to answer really had nothing to do with his desire for Ali to be the center of attention. It was about preventing Ali from having a fair opportunity to expose the reporter's intentions while explaining himself. He was denying Ali justice. That's why Ali got pissed off.
I think that was a very perceptive comment. I think some people really do paint others to be the stereotype they've decided they are. It's inevitable eventually that person is going to stop playing ball. I learnt something today.
I agree 💯. & the cussing just shows He was human. A sinner. I normally don't cuss as well but like Ali, when I'm extremely angry 😡 I cuss & then the next thing coming is a 👊
@@hamzaahmed3066yea but in his mind he prolly thought that his outburst could sell the fight, get more ppls attention, even though he was angry. Ali just seems like one of those guys who doesnt grow violent and angry without the intention of entertaining the ppl, this was a race issue with the interviewer, talking about ali in a bad way in front of him during a press conference or weigh in is one thing, but if you insult him and disrespect his race in any way in everyday life or in a simple interview youre in a lot of trouble.
He is agitating the champ, if you can't answer my questions, I'm not asking any of your question. The reporter either wants to be hit or a dk in his face. The reporter need to kick rocks
He refused to answer his question regarding his age so he could further establish his point,. The Interviewer arrogantly responded that it wasn’t important,. Well to have a person in front of you that is deemed the Greatest then you should at least answer his question or stop doubting what he’s responding back with during the interview,.
Exactly...That's why he didn't get up and leave, being antagonistic a procedure that the Police use to the letter, but I would went jail by tossing his Azz out...✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Ali and his first wife lived in my neighborhood in Chicago when I was a little girl in the early 70's He would eat all the time at a restaurant around the corner from my house and when he walked out all the little kids would run and hug him except me because he looked like God himself. I was mesmerized at his presence. He had that "It" factor. This reporter showed his true color. Ali was a real man and would not allow anyone to disrespect him. Love that man!
Ali lived down the street from my high-school in the late 70's.. Los Angeles High School, US kids would see him pretty often pulling out of his gated community. Actually Sugar Ray Robinson lived in my neighborhood as well. I would see Sugar watering his grass every now and then.
He wasn't called the The Greatest simply because he could throw a punch. Honor, integrity and class is what he brought to the table and there has not been a champ yet to match Muhammad Ali's talent, nor his caliber of human connection.
It’s one of the only few times when he says these kind of words , it’s low key weird because that’s not his character like when you see mike Tyson say shit words it’s totally fine (it’s his character), but we never really got used to Ali saying these words because he said them on media a very few times
""WHAT'S MY NAME M*TH*R F**KER!!"" *Muhammad Ali to Ernie Terrell when Terrell kept calling Ali "Cassius Clay",, Feb 6 1967 at the Astrodome,, AND ALI SAID IT ON LIVE TV🤣😂
Back in the day cussing was not something people did anywhere near as much as we do now. Not saying Ali isn't a class act since he is but the enviornment of less cussing in regular conversations back then is no doubt a factor why he didn't cuss much
Hes "Human". Stop acting like Yall Perfect and DONT Curse at times, smh. And Why always mentioning Mike Tyson when it Come to Anger?? Speak about those slavemasters that got angry. How were THEY?? smdh
Other than the time Ernie Terrell refused to call him by his name, this is the ONLY other time I've seen Ali angry - genuinely angry. Even called him a mf...And I don't blame him for getting upset
He was cussing in a similar fashion during the Holmes fight as well, telling Holmes"Imma fuck you up".This interview looks like it was shortly after the Holmes fight, when Ali's health problems were really becoming obvious.
too bad when we have a lion heart that stands up they usually stand alone..if we were aware of our open enemy he probably not have that disease, which is said to been given to him
That reporter was being devilish. He pissed Mr. Ali off so bad that he made him get outside of himself, by causing him to cuss. That dude deserved to have his bodyguards (if they were there) to lift him up by his collar and put him out, since he wanted to be so hardheaded and ignorant.
This era was a highly racial era in America...we have come a long way & considering the fiasco at present "We the People" must show this treasonous regime "WE" are not the racists they profess of us of all races to be...
Ali was often angry and racist during his affiliation with the Nation of Islam. But besides that he often came across as bombastic, cocky, arrogant and facetious .
@@unclejoe7958 thats not true he wanst racist,he said that white people be trying do things in different context and he wanst racist or beleugent to the nation of islam for anything and or was saying how they could help and you have to proof that all the bombastic and other things were not a persona for boxing and in some cases was not just talking his stuff
I love this man. I miss him so much. RIP my bro. U always had all the right answers. But most impressive was the fact that u also knew all the right questions.
I genuinely thought he was gonna get up and smack the shit out of this guy. Another reason why I admire this man so much, he always stood up for himself and took no bullshit from anybody RIP: the greatest Muhammad Ali
Reporters like this will ask you about your deepest failings as a human being without breaking a sweat, then act like asking them how old they are is crossing a line. A decent rule of thumb is that if you have no interest in a mutual conversation, you shouldn't be talking to someone.
@@NateS917 it really wasnt. One person is interviewing and the other is being interviewed, that means one is supposed to make questions and the other is supposed to answer them, and ideally those questions should never be as long or longer than the answers. In my next comment I'll explain how to tie shoe laces and why eating crayons isnt good for you... the more you know...
@@ryckarduhryckarduh180 an interview should be a conversation, they ask the question, then its answered, and its inquired on more, if the interviewee wants to ask a question, that's totally fine. Encouraged I'd even say. And no, dont bother, I doubt you know how to tie your shoes anyway.
@@NateS917 an interview is an interview, a conversation is a conversation, you might notice that one word is used to describe one thing and the other is used to describe another which might indicate that one and the other might not be the same thing. And everyone who knows a tiny bit about journalism knows that the one giving information is the one being interviewed, the interviewer is supposed to keep his opinion where sun doesnt shine, this is not about the interviewer, his opinion is not welcome, he's not an active agent he's there to make questions and collect answers
For anyone confused by Ali's upset: he was trying to explain racism in interviews and the corrupt state/power structures. The reporter (a middle aged white dude) then plays dumb and tries to entrap him by interrupting mid-sentence, asking a question he knows the answer to; "what powers and people?". By specifying, Ali would face further persecution by the State and propaganda backlash. The reporter refusing to say his age furthers the mistrust, and confirms the reporter's true intentions. Ali's saying "I wasn't born yesterday and neither were you", then leaves before he hits the racist reporter, since he clearly refused to.
The reporter is lucky that Ali was a gem of a human. If this was Tyson (also a gem but an aggressive one), he would be in an ER room. Edit: I see some of you getting pressed. This was obviously a joke due to the fact that Tyson didn't take bs from anyone.
In Ali's time him pushing a white reporter would have been taken very differently. He had to act different. This was very very aggressive for the time. And good for him.
"get up now. why you gotta stay here? get up now or i'll get up..." the sweet, familiar intonation of ali, smushed between two intensely worded sections. the man changed in a serious fashion when heated, clearly. his emotions are dang near palpable.
@@TJ-kk5zf to you!! How are you going to tell me who is important to me .. is your mom one of the most important people in my life? Well nvm thats a bad analogy, she is.
He did handle it the right way. The reporter didn't bite into his bait and he got all mad at that. Also calling him a racist out of no evidence is all he had to resort to because he had nothing on him
Nawh he a strong , intelligent Black American.. The power to the people Black American spirited era man..Anyways I ain't never seen an African go hard like that on an interview..
That’s why Muhammad Ali is one of my heroes because he’s not afraid to speak his mind and that reporter knew he was being nonchalant by not answering his question
Exactly. Ali was personable in his interviews, always was, but for a man to not answer a simple question, that was a lack of respect. It was if the man didn't see Ali as equal, and ask whatever he wanted, and he's supposed to answer. Ali, said "nah, Fk that!"
Good for Ali. I love this video because it shows he was human, and capable of getting annoyed just like anyone. That reporter was disrespectful. He was addressing the heavyweight champion legend Muhammad Ali. He should have answered.
This is why Muhammad Ali is the greatest. Here is a worldwide champion boxing hero who understood the struggle of black Americans in white racist America.
People forget that although hes universally loved and appreciated today, the powers that be and the media hated him. He was loud, vocal, antagonist who kept everyone on their toes when dealing with him. This was late in his career but he always had a combative relationship with reporters...RIP ALI
Don't forget that 99% of reporters back then were middle class white males who looked down on and talked down to black people. Ali knew it and was having none of it.
The smoothness..he recognized the trap right away. Right before he asked him how old he was, you can definitely hear him about to say "I'm smarter than that." Reversed the trap and, all of a sudden, he doesn't wanna be in the spotlight. Tactics of a devil.
Ali is normally super disarming even though he was one of (if not just the most) dangerous man on the planet, so seeing him genuinely pissed is very unsettling but good on him to take no shit
@@averychilco you can here his corner cursing up a storm during the Wepner fight, its pretty funny. But by this time, around 1980, Ali was dealing with stolen money, alimony, CTE...very sad ending for the GOAT
Tyson is scary...dude puts fear into people by his temper and all...but seeing Ali get that way is even scarier, he scared me more than Tyson right here. Like Tyson said "Ali would DIE for shit, I'm not dying for fighting." Ali was scary as much as he was humble and sweet
