"Aggressively mediocre." What a great description. I am using this one.

I mean let’s be honest here. They were never going to have a “both sides have bad elements schtick” in a Disney movie where one of the sides is *China.*

So basically they made the movie less cartoonish but literally have a Chinese’s Wizard as the main villian, what the hell.

I guess Disney decided to remake the SW Sequel Trilogy with an asian protagonist.

I've missed these reviews so much. I see the movie industry has been taking notes from the "AAA" games industry on exploitative, anti-consumer business practices.

Hey Bull, hope everything in life comes to work out for you. here to say my favorite content of yours is the classic cartoon stuff that you did. You can really tell you have a genuine passion for the shows you covered. Stuff like CyberSix /Gargoyles and the reboot retrospectives is why I subscribed, and keep checking in on you.

As far as pricing goes, they won't make as much as they would in theatres no matter what they price it at I don't think. Not a big blockbuster. And streaming revenue alone, especially with how cheap Disney+ is, will not pay for MCU blockbuster level movies for long. Some want theatres to go under. If they did, that would radically alter the kinds of movies we get or their pricing in order to make it up. But as a single person I couldn't justify so much money. I'd have to just wait. Even if I had a friend over that's a lot. I admit I MIGHT do it for a Marvel movie to avoid spoilers but probably not. And congrats on your daughter! Yes she is adorable!

Not since Last Jedi have I seen a movie that splits both the audience and the critics right down the middle.

So, I just watched the Mulan 2020 movie. This will have spoilers so be warned. Now, this is going to be an unbiased review, where I will ignore the fact that the main actress supports police brutality in Hong Kong. So what do I think of this movie? If I could describe one word to this movie, its that it is very Soulless. The only character that I genuinely liked was Donnie yen of course. Now, to get to the meat of this movie on why it felt soulless, let’s look at what the animated movie had. Mushu. The Exclusion of important characters. Mushu to Mulan was like what the Genie was to Aladdin. or Timon and Pumba was to Lion King Yeah, Aladdin and Simba were the main characters. But what made the movie went from “good” to near masterpiece was because of Genie, timon and Pumba. Their charming personalities and wacky content made the movies they were in from “good” to near masterpiece. If those characters werent in the movie, then the movies probably wouldnt be well-liked. Same with Mushu. Mushu brought the spark and energy that Mulan needed, which is why Mulan is genuinely a great film. Now, I understand that this movie is trying to be a movie about the real Mulan, and not the animated Mulan. But….. it has the same story elements as the animated Mulan. This movie is like a combination of the 2009 Chinese Mulan movie, and the Mulan cartoon. As a result it feels weird. Mushu, a great and likeable character, turns into…. a phoenix that acts as a map for Mulan. This movie also did not have Captain Li Shang from the animated movie. Li Shang was probably my favorite character. He was the perfect example of a male side character in a female led character done right. He was developed, had a likeable personality, and was very charismatic. Li Shang was split into two people, but those characters were kind of boring. The second problem with this movie is 2. The Lack of Music Now, i understand the director wanting to make it realistic, after all warriors dont just randomly sing out of nowhere. However, the problem with this is that the movie was boring. I am sorry, but like I said, this movie is trying very hard to be accurate to the real Mulan story, and seemingly copies the 2009 mulan movie in china. But this movie also tries to lighten the tone and just slap a Disney label on it. See, the 2009 Mulan movie is actually more accurate imo. But when I was watching this movie and seeing how this movie is trying to resemble like the original animated movie, I got bored and realized part of my boredom was that there were no songs. I think what made the live action movies remakes at least more bearable to watch were the songs because it could keep me interested. This movie doesnt have the Who I am song. But most importantly, it does not have the top 5 best Disney songs of all time “I’ll Make a man out of you.” Finally, the reason why this movie wasnt good 3. The villains The animated mulan movie had a villain name Shan Yu. The villain was not developed, but he was menacing. Seriously, the animated movie had darker themes than the live action. In the live action, heres the problem. There are two villains. What made Shan yu threatening and menacing was that he was the main villain. But in this movie, we get two villains, and as a result the villains dont feel developed or memorable. Seriously. this woman sides with Mulan in the end because she’s “a woman” or “Female empowerment.” or something. Like no offense, but if you’re going to betray your partner for the opponent simply because the opponent is a “woman”…. that’s not going to be satisfying. One more thing. 4. Mulan This is really personal. Because believe it or not, Mulan is my favorite Disney princess. No, its not because she’s Asian. Mulan was my favorite because she ws relatable. She was the underdog. Mulan was one of hte few characters who had flaws and lost battles. But she did whine and complain like a good girl? No, she sucked it up, overcame many challenges and became a worthy warrior. She proved that she didnt need to have masculine features to be a warrior, all it take was hard work and perserverance to achieve greatness. So what did this live action do? Well, it made Mulan the Chosen One. So what happened was they turned Mulan, a beloved Disney princess into a Mary Sue for their live action movies, like rey from star wars. Mulan in the live-action is nearly perfect, she succeeds almost all the time. She is the Chosen One, she is destined to defeat the bad guy. When you tell me it was her destiny to defeat an invading army, I am sorry but I lose interest in the character. In conclusion, this movie wasn’t memorable. It was boring. I am officially over the live action hype train. No, its not because its led by a female individual. Its because this movie felt boring or souless. It was way too long, didnt have heart in it. This movie didnt have any memorable characters, dialogue too long, and lack of developing villains. Review for this movie: 4 out of 10.

Nice to see you again. I think the big problem that Disney faced with this film is no only are in a pickle for a movie they spent some dough making, they are also BLEEDING money at the moment. To the tune of a couple million a day.

Added bonus, they not only filmed on an illegal ground with approval from the government, but also filmed in southern China the opposite direction of the original folk tail. Aside from that the numerous instances and references to the original that lessen its value with some of the most forced dialogue out there. Always appreciate reviews like these that are on point with what is needed to reference without dragging on, even if I prefer these days the bigger examinations that go into why the sorts of film fail at each corner.

There was barely any attempts at humour after the first 15 minutes, which the film desperately needed. Thankfully Donnie Yen and Ron Yuan where great and added some life to the film whenever they were on screen.

The whole portrayal of the leader and their war this reminds me of Jetli's HERO where Jetli is a assassin who is set to kill Qin to end his war of unification "uniting" China under one religion, one language and one rule, it portrays the assassin having a change of heart at the end and decides it's for the greater good that this "uniting" continues despite the protests and deaths it will lead to.

Mulan (2020) does two things -Show that China is as communist as Pocahontas was historically accurate -That communists have a point when they say capitalism is evil...not that they're much better

For, like ever, since this movie was announced it had no chance of being good. Right out of the gate they were saying they were removing mushu, li shang, and any chance of "i'll make a man out of you" and once you get past that there is nothing unique, fun or interesting about the movie. Mulan's real struggle was pushing through adversity in a time where women were oppressed and she fought hard to win the war for her father despite people not believing in here or supporting her if they knew she was a girl. She had very little innate ability and so she disguised herself as a man to sneak into the army and get trained and in the new movie she just knows how to fight and was trained as a child. They ruined this movie and there are very few to zero redeeming qualities left now. I hope they don't plan on continuing to ruin great IPs by funneling their money into SJW support groups that are crippling all the media releases. If you make a great movie without forced agendas you cater to everyone. If you adopt those agendas you make a movie for nobody. Agenda pushers can't enjoy your movie no matter what you do anyway so don't bother.

oh wow. this is even worse than I feared!

My problem with this movie is that it already exists; Asian media *loves* the basic premise of Mulan and has already made several live action adaptations of this thing, ranging from doing exactly what this movie did to making it a buddy-cop comedy with time travel (no, really. Mulan travels back in time to save the world from an apocalypse in one of these. Which somehow involved shoving an apple up her friend's nose). The other thing is the directors didn't seem to understand that Wuxia films (which is what this is going for) is suppose to be absurd, kinda like how the Yakuza series is all about super serious men spontaneously disrobing and beating the shit out of each other with supersaiyan combos. This is why good Wuxia films tend to end up as meme material.
