Mulberry is a sister wood to the Orange Osage, or hedge wood. Also, hedge apples (fruit from the female Orange Osage) helps prevent Miller Moths from coming in the house. Both, hedge and mulberry, are very dense hardwoods and make excellent firewood. The also make very good fence post because they don’t rot easily.

Just cut and split Mulberry today. It's yellow on the inside then turns dark red.

There is a bunch of mulberry trees at my dads house in Kentucky. I go every once in a while and cut some off and let it dry to use in my smoker. I think its really good on chicken and pork. It does have a very sweet smell.

Nice TJ - that sounds tasty. My brother has a smoker and I’m curious now how much he’s experimented with different types of wood in it. I’ll have to ask him!

Yeah, it burns hot, as Chris said below, it does spark a lot though. So that's a good one to keep in mind. Have a good one Ricc!

The Mulberry wood I cut here in central PA is a bright florescent yellow color to the wood, has nice smell, and is very wet inside when split as well as very heavy and dense, it resembles black locust wood but differs in that the Mulberry is a far brighter yellow and has a pleasing smell whereas the locust seems to smell somewhat bad. So its odd to hear you say the color of the wood as being reddish there.. Perhaps 2 different varieties of Mulberry? I just found a downed mulberry today, ID'ed the leaves and confirmed it by cutting a branch off a known mulberry tree and comparing the wood which was identical.

The colour changes with the seasoning. When freshly cut is bright yellow then it tends to get reddish and when it's fully seasoned is dark brown. Great firewood indeed.

Yes, tons of sparks. Grows like a weed here in Louisville. People actually call them weeds sometimes.

This is funny... Last year I had to "Trim" our Mulberry tree... big pile of limbs... Mom asked my brother to take the limbs off... That was a year ago. Today... I'm picking up small pieces of wood to store, because I'm getting ready to live in my VT3 (1972 Vintage Tiny Travel Trailer)... and will be putting in a tiny wood burning stove... (see where I"m going here)... I knew we had a couple of Pecan Trees I could pick up dry limbs... but realized we also have the pile of (DRY) Mulberry limbs from last year that my brother NEVER Picked up!!! NOW... I'm so glad he didn't pick up the Mulberry limbs... I have more FREE wood... Praise The Lord!!!
