MULLET ON THE FLY - SWFF IRELAND

Fly fishing for mullet will test the steel of any angler. The emotional roller-coaster ride of blanks, tail bites, big swirls, and explosive runs in shallow water make mullet fishing one of Ireland's greatest sports. The power and stamina of one fish in particular left me speechless and shaken. What a great place to be! I look forward to the return of some bright, calm days so I can be close to these wonderful fish again.

Great video, Didn't realise you could catch Mullet on this type of fly, I have been contemplating for a long time now to give this type of fishing a go, looks like good fun. Would you recommend any other patterns, I heard a bread fly and small shrimp flies are good? Thanks, William
@surethingsfly
@surethingsfly 9 лет назад
William Ian Kelly Hi William, the larger mullet of over 3Ib seem to be more receptive to my flies. In my humble opinion large mullet who hunt in the outflow of estuaries are an ideal target, and partial to something more than algae i.e. shrimp, sandeel and the like. Unlike their grass munching counterparts who happily graze on algae all day in a tidal lagoon. If you find a shoal feeding in an aggressive manner seize the opportunity and cast something out to them. On occasion a small spinner or even a black or white jelly worm will do the trick if the fly is not your thing. Be patient and wear gloves so you will have some fingernails left afterwards. Happy hunting William.

have you them fed onto bread first in my local estuary they hit white flys but its because there feeding on coarse fishermens bait on up the river ive found a dead mullet that weighted 14lbs 2 oz washed up pressume from old age as ther were no bite marks and no pollution inncidents at the time
@surethingsfly

whitetrouter No chum, or food, just a diet of flies. I've never seen a double figure mullet but I've come close. A friend of mine knows were some hangout around a jetty. Alas with so much structure there's no point in even trying. I've heard of an unsubstantiated 14lb'r being landed last year. I so want to believe that!!! Happy hunting WT!

Rotting seaweed on the high tide line did the trick. It was full of life which the Mullet feed on. Once you find Mullet feeding on shrimp, flies, or whatever you're in with a good chance. I wish you luck on your travels John.

Can I ask do you target the mullet or are you fishing for sea bass and mullet at same time. Do you see the fish or are you covering water? Any tips re where to look for mullet? I usually only see them in the estuaries. you look to be catching them in open saltwater.
@surethingsfly
@surethingsfly 6 лет назад
Yes I target mullet. In my experience I find that it is more productive to target mullet when they are feeding at the mouths of estuaries or at the high tide line with rotting seaweed in a bay, on a beach, or wherever. I mainly sight fish for everything now, even though it can prove to be less productive for other species, but a lot more satisfying. I should add that I always sight fish for mullet, it is very difficult otherwise. In my humble opinion there are two types of mullet, you have the grass munching variety, and the bait-fish/shrimp/sand-eel etc eaters. The latter are more obliging, try and find those. Have fun P. ATB.

Thank you so much for that information: makes sense. Only see mullet few miles away from Abersoch : they are lots of them and some huge ones 7lbs plus. BUT not yet managed to catch one. Hopefully they are not seaweed munchers :)

Hi loving this vid. we have a lot of mullet here in Dorset - Mudeford - in our harbour, not sure whether they are all algae munchers, will try this fly if i see mullet feeding aggressively. It s not easy to spot them on the shore, ive all tried a similar fly for bass, had follows but yet to connect!! what is name of your fly please? Cheers Liz
@surethingsfly
@surethingsfly 8 лет назад
Thank you Elisabeth. Here is a small bit of insight into the enigmatic mullet. There are typically three species present in Irish waters, i.e. the thick lipped, the thin lipped and the golden grey. By far, the thick lipped variety are the most abundant and as these are strictly detritus feeders they never take the fly and hence the millions of casts into estuaries boiling with fish to no avail. Even foul hooking is tough given the large armoured scales on these aquatic rhinos. A bit of bread maybe, but flies / lures not so much, irrespective of the irresistibility of which one. The golden grey are very rare, but my cousin somehow managed to catch the only one I’ve ever seen on a fly. Therefore whatever chances you have your best chances is with a nice thin lipped mullet (smaller head and thin lips). They can be taken on small spinners and lures also. As these are at the limits of their distribution in Irish waters, hence their relative sparsity here. I cannot speak of the U.K. Tips - I know this will probably sound like a 'no brainer', but the calmer and warmer the weather, the better the odds are of catching one, the fish should feed in greater numbers and locating them should be much easier. The angle you cast to them is critical. If you do not get any interest change you're position and try from a new angle. Don't worry about lining them, on occasion I've done this deliberately resulting in feeding fish being pushed (out away from the shallows) into deeper water, this creates more takes for some reason. Locations - Try the mouth of an estuary where you find whirlpools or eddies. The mullet like to feed in these just after and during high tide, or secondly try anywhere you find rotting seaweed. Come back at high tide and they should be feeding from the floating mass of insects falling from the weed. If you follow these guidelines you odd should greatly increase (hopefully;)). I will get back to you with more information about the fly and in particular a small bass fly. I will create a fly tying video just since you asked. Please feel free to ask more questions and thanks for any thumbs up on my videos. PS, please be patient, new software is being installed on my computer at the minute, and i should be up and running again shortly. Tightlines to you.

I was surprised that a baitfish pattern worked so well. I don't have the opportunity to fish for mullet where I live but always thought that it would require small crustacean imitations to produce fish.
@surethingsfly
@surethingsfly 10 лет назад
M00nsplitter That makes two of us! 18mm maggot imitation, 12mm shrimps imitation, and the pattern above have been very successful. You have to have a constant visual with the first two flies though. I have not tried any crustaceans yet. Thank you for the comment M00nsplitter! ATB.

Is that a proper sea fly rod or do you just clean it after every use, i have my 7 weight rod for the river but afraid to use it in sea incase goes to shit. i Clean the rods after every sea trip anyway but wondering would it be diff with fly rods.
@surethingsfly
@surethingsfly 10 лет назад
MoodyPa In my humble opinion I believe the rod is not the issue, but the reel. The reel has to be suited to salt, or it will corrode straight away. However a decent second hand reel to get you setup should be available for sale on line. (I use a greys grxi) Best of luck MoodyPa!
