You just helped me make a decision on packs!!! I live in Utah and on shoulder seasons I hike in the Utah desert and need to do water hauls - and was debating between the arch haul or circuit. Thanks!!!!

I realize this is an older video and you may not see this, but I love you load out. I’ve never backpacked, but trying to learn as much as I can before I start. I’m a little confused on what you use the fold up mat for. You have a chair, so I assume it’s not for sitting on like most. But you said it’s your favorite piece of gear, but didn’t explain what you do with it. How do you use it and why is it your favorite? Thanks for all the great tips!
@TubaSolotheHiker

Hello there. Thank you for the kind words. My kit is pretty much exactly the same today believe it or not. But yeah, the fold up mat. Its for my rear end. Lots of "jag" out there in the wild. Its so nice to have that big thick pad to sit on when you stop for a snack and you don't want to pull the chair out. I honestly rarely bring a chair, but I always bring my folding pad. It aslo doubles as a porch that I can stand on and I can use it to pad my chair if there is a breeze. I'm older than I may look and cold really hits me hard so anything I can use to block even the slightest breeze is well-welcome. I've certainly become a comfort backpacker over the last few years. Hopefully that clears up any confusion. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask.

@@TubaSolotheHiker Ahh, that totally makes sense. I’ll definitely add one to my pack. I love learning from you guys before I head out so I don’t have to learn the hard way! Haha. Thanks for the quick reply and clarifying. Safe hiking!

Thank you Tony! Yeah that spoon is pretty slick so far. Food gets stuck on it a bit but that just means I get to enjoy the flavor for a few seconds more..LOL...but yeah solid spoon indeed. And thank you for the kind word about the kit. Its almost dialed in. If I wasn't such an old man and get cold at the slightest bit of wind, this kit would be perfect. Take care my friend.

Another zpacks pack! I've had the same Gregory pack since I first started backpacking...but I really love how yours is with the big outer pocket and the two side pockets. I haven't been doing any research yet but I might consider a zpacks backpack when I'm ready to purchase a new one
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 4 года назад
Hi Amy...yeah that Zpacks Arc Haul pack is wonderful. This weekend when I got up to 30Lbs with my water carry it worked perfectly. I don't really know why I don't use that pack more often. And yes. Those outer pockets are the best. Really I wish that was more the case with more pack makers. Yeah I wish I could say the Arc Haul was my first pack. I'm one of those special cases where nothing is good enough for me so the Arc Haul was like pack number 12..LOL...I've got problems. But yeah, for the record I'm very happy with the Arc Haul. If one is careful (not overly careful rather just generally careful) with their gear, the Arc Haul could be a very solid choice for you. Take care my friend!

@@TubaSolotheHiker Thanks for your thoughts on it! I was secretly hoping a squirrel would chew a bag in my backpack this past weekend (I didn't leave food in there though, I was hoping it would chew a hole for no reason...lol) so I have an excuse to get a new pack. this pack will probably last me another 10 years lol Hope you had a great labor day weekend! Although a 30lb pack isn't fun. My pack this weekend was 32 lbs when full...that's over 30% of my body weight hahaha it kind of sucked. Don't know if my pack has ever been that heavy (we had all our backpacking and climbing gear for 4 days)

I prefer a freestanding tent because the ground in the Sierra mountains (where I hike the most) is too hard and rocky for stakes.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 4 года назад
Hello TK. Oh yeah. My Sierra trip coming up I'll be using a Copper Spur HVUL1. Can't wait to give it a go. Might be a bit heavier but the functionality will be well worth the up-swing in weight. Take care!

It is almost impossible to do a video here in socal without having to wait for a quiet moment without jet noise, I feel your pain, lol. I like your tripod carry idea, I've been hand carrying my camera on my tripod while I hike but it gets very uncomfortable after a few miles and I can't use trekking poles. I'm definitely going to look into switching to your setup.

Matt Rose hey Matt. I actually got them from Costco. They should be coming back into stock soon. I plan on buying a few extra pairs myself. Hope that helps.
