Sometimes an outing doesn't quite go as planned... and you figure out a way to make it work. In this episode, I begin fly fishing on a lake in Connecticut's Northwest Hills and eventually find myself trekking out to surrounding streams to see how many species I can bring to the net.

Love this video! Would love to see more episodes like if where you target other species like largemouth bass, pickerel, pike or even saltwater species! The trout, salmon and smallie episodes are outstanding, but I know you could put together great episodes with new target species as well!

As it happened, I got my boat squared away (trailer restored to being road-ready, new trolling motor, new battery), later than I had hoped this year, but it's sitting in my garage right now ready to go once it warms up in spring. Fly fishing for trout will probably always be a central theme of the channel, but being able to fish from a boat sometimes will offer plenty more opportunities to target other species. I'm thinking largemouth bass, maybe pike, possibly bowfin. I'll have to see where the year leads.

That's what we like about fishing. You never know. Pickerel are so much fun to catch. They're sneaky, viciously aggressive and can be powerful. But they destroy flys with a passion. Love your videos. I can relate to you. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Keep up the great work.

Yeah, the pickerel were a blast on the 5wt! And with my boat finally restored for next year, I'm hoping to work in more fly fishing for warmwater species. And a Merry Christmas to you, too!

Man you went after the natives today. A while ago i did a bit of research on which of our fish are native to know what it would be like fishing here 400-500 years ago. No bass, pike, browns, catfish, carp, walleye, crappie or even bluegill. But it would be a whole lot of gator pickrel, jumbo perch and massive brookies. Not to mention seasonal runs of huge shad, stripers, and atlantic salmon. Not too bad.

You know, I hadn't considered that, but you're absolutely right. It's pretty cool that it incidentally worked out being a round-up of native species, especially considering that the day began with me trying to target a relatively bizarre Western US transplant.
