Episode #74
Each year, as we ease into June, I join a group of friends and head up to Vermont for 3 days of trout fishing in the Green Mountain State. Brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout: the usual suspects, but in a beautiful, largely rural landscape that always yields some excellent results. I returned with over 9 hours footage and whittled it down the best I could. What I bring to you is a lengthier vid than usual at about 45 minutes run time, but I bring you along as I set out fly fishing on range of gorgeous Central VT waters.
➤ Location(s)
Black River, Vermont

So many folks loathe fishing in the rain. That’s understandable, but as you mentioned, fishing in the rain can pay huge dividends. Since the river is being pelted with rain constantly, which is noisy and obscures their ability to see what’s happening above the water, the fish become MUCH less spooky and much less indicator-shy. Thanks for watching!

Well, you hooked me right away , yet again! That one extremely big thick and colored up brown trout was more than a Brutus! How many lbs do you figure? Man, it was gorgeous in every way. Always love how you edit your videos into almost like a movie. But, also that one underwater release of that big shouldered brown was perfect! Really cool footage of a Dobson Fly if nobody had ever seen one they can really freak you out. Haha. Also that snubnosed native brookie was interesting. Everything else about it was like a beautiful native brooktrout. Oh, and loved when that bird scared the crap out of you. You probably did that to him/her first ! Lol. Oh , less I forget that brookie I’ll call it the two tree limb brooktrout. Perfect how you relaxed and figured that out. Haha. And still filmed it for us. Omg! All in all , yet another classic video of a great few days out on Vermont’s streams. Thanks , been missing you. But, appreciate you taking us along on this awesome multi steam/multi fish outing! And this one definitely gave me my fix for alittle while. Ha! I’ll be waiting for your next production. Take care bud and tightlines !

That tough underbrush keeps water temps down and discourages the less persevering anglers. It also provides excellent habitat for food species.

Hey bro love your vids! Fellow nutmeger here but a transplant in California at the moment (van life) you should do some reviews on your rods and reels! Those cabelas rods looked very interesting and also the liquid reel thanks!

@ConnecticutAngler Год назад
Hey thanks for watching! I’ve thought about doing review vids for a long time. Frankly, I’d like to. But in truth, I struggle to find time to even make a dozen vids each year now. I’m always too busy using my spare time to go fishing! And sitting in front of the computer doing editing pretty much always takes a back seat to time on the water. The solution is probably to try and make shorts where I can do reviews in a more compact format. I’m def contemplating it.

@Sochmo18 Год назад
@@ConnecticutAngler yeah that would be super cool, maybe an easier editing format where you just talk about a product for a few minutes without any cuts would be easy. Cheers!

Yeah, the overlays went on the video last and I guess I sort of rushed them. I entirely missed that I forgot to change “Connecticut” to “Vermont” in the river title overlays. I got the counties right at least.😂 Thanks for watching!

Great fishing. You are really good at it and some beauties. Your editor kept noting n screen you were in Connecticut even though you were saying Vermont.

Yeah, I put the overlays on last and, in my haste to get the vid out after a couple weeks of work, I totally overlooked that I changed everything on the river titles but the damn state. Oh well, my typos are committed to the video forever now.😂

I've fished the Black River a number of times. Unfortunately, I hear that the river's temperatures are too warm in summer to support the trout, and any that aren't caught and kept, die off.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler Год назад
I generally agree with that assessment: the holdover rate on the Black is likely rather poor on account of the summertime water temperatures. Though I’m sure a few make it here or there when they can find cold groundwater seeps in the river bottom or where they can find thermal refuge at the confluence with colder tributaries.
@Bradimoose
@Bradimoose Год назад
Do you think these are stocked fish or do they grow that big up in Vermont? I go to NC to flyfish sometimes and the only huge trout like that are stocked ones on private water you have to pay to fish. Looks like a fun place to fish.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler Год назад
Well, it’s a safe bet to say that the all of the rainbows in the vid are stockers; possibly holdover stockers, but stockers just the same. Vermont does have wild rainbows on many of its small streams though (I caught several wild juveniles on unstocked streams last year), and they also have self-sustaining populations of “steelhead” rainbows on a couple rivers, but I wasn’t fishing those streams this time around. The browns on Black River are probably mixed bag; that river definitely has wilds, but it also gets a healthy dose of big stockers each year, some of which will holdover. The Castleton, where I caught that little wild juvenile brown in the beginning of the vid, grows some big wild browns, but I didn’t find any this time around. All the brookies were wild.

What rod+reel combo are you running? It looks great and definitely seems pretty tough
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler Год назад
The 5wt, which was used on all the larger water in the vid, is a Lamson Liquid on a Redington Path 8.5’. A relatively affordable combination actually (I think it comes in around $200-$250 cumulatively) and it’s a real workhorse.

This was filmed back in the first half of June. All of the streams were running relatively low at that time, though they did get a temporary influx during that one day of heavy rain. Most had returned to the same relatively low flow levels just a couple days later.

Looking back through channel comments here and I just realized that this was the vid in which I accidentally forgot to edit “Connecticut” to “Vermont” in the overlays for each river. Now that I realized that, your question makes more sense. So yeah, all of these streams _are_ in Vermont. The overlays were an aggravating oversight on my part; didn’t realize Id neglected to change the state until the video had been released and there was no going back at that point. RU-vid doesn’t allow creators to upload replacement vids; I would have to delete this original, with all its engagement and comments, and upload it anew, which would negatively impact the whole channel. So, it is what it is.

Nice video man but you should consider keeping the stream names to yourself.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed. Regarding the stream names, I'm inclined to go into a bit of detail about this in order to elaborate my personal thoughts. Major rivers with lots of existing visibility don't stand to benefit much from my agonizing over secrecy. To be perfectly frank, I'm fully confident that the streams I named in this video aren't any worse off for it. The panic over spot burn can, and oftentimes has, been dramatized to the point of absurdity. Taking pains not to name such well-known and heavily fished rivers in their respective areas as the Black, East Creek, Otter Creek is silly, while mentioning them by name does serve the purpose of offering a geographic sense of place that has story value in my opinion. Smaller, purely wild trout streams (essentially blue lines with little or no place in the public consciousness) are a different story though, which is why you'll find that throughout my catalog of videos I scarcely ever name them. Folks have even poked fun at the fact that I'm running out of letters in the alphabet for all of the "Secret Stream A", "Secret Stream B", "Secret Stream C" sort of designations that I use in those cases. Don't misunderstand: I fully agree that spot burn can be problematic for certain water and certain situations. It's something that should be considered on a case by case basis in making videos such as mine. I have and continue to give it its due consideration. But I also think that, among some folks, the reasonable, situationally-aware concerns about spot burn have had a troublesome tendency to morph into a broader, blanket paranoia over ever naming ANY water, even in the many cases where it would be tough to make any sensible argument for that sort of worry. I simply don't subscribe to that latter attitude.

We did spend time on Otter Creek, but time constraints meant that it ended up mostly getting cut from the video. However, it is shown towards the tail end of the video in two brief clips.
