Slight correction: at about 3:25 you say that ASIs and or Feats come in at every four levels. This isn’t entirely true. Rogues and Fighters get more ASI/Feats than other classes. Rogues get an ASI/Feat at levels 4, 8, 10, 12, 16, & 19 for a total of 6 ASI/Feats, while Fighters get them at levels 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, & 19 for a total of 7 ASI/Feats. It’s something important to consider when deciding when to multiclass.

The reason why Warlock is so easy is actually pretty simple: The Warlock is NOT a Spellcaster. At no point in their whole Level 1-20 devlopement do Warlocks get Spellcasting. Pact magic is a totaly unique class specific Feature, like the Superiority Dice for Battlemaster or the Wildshape for Druids.
@ConstructedChaos
@ConstructedChaos 2 года назад
Yep! Good point there! I just classify it as such since it is a feature that gives you spell slots that vibe right along with the other stuff you know!

Well. They automatically receive cantrips as part of the class. And they get magic, just the slots function in a different way. What makes that not spell casting?
@ConstructedChaos

@@edwardg8912 RAW just specifically states that the feature is called Pact Magic and not called Spellcasting. It’s just a technicality.
@Dieonceperday
@Dieonceperday 2 года назад
@@edwardg8912 The point is that Warlock pact magic doesn't really factor into picking your multiclassing the same way that multiclassing into any other caster does. It's a separate consideration. Famously, Sorcerers and Paladins are going to look at those spell slots regaining on a short rest and really want those, since those are classes that have issues with longer adventuring days (still mad that bloodwell vial is an item and isn't baked into sorcerer) and the addition of those extra spell slots works really well with their core mechanics. Normally, the most 1st and 2nd level spell slots you can get is 4 and 3, but due to pact magic not interacting with standard spellcasting, the two extra 1st (from 2 levels in warlock) or two extra 2nd level slots (from 3 levels in warlock) are a huge boon (not to mention, again, that could actually be 4 or even 6 extra slots. For normal multiclassing with spellcasting classes, you just add both spellcasting levels together, which is both good and bad. It's definitely my go-to multiclass for either sorcerer or bard, which struggle a lot with impactful higher level features, even if it slows down the progress of getting higher level slots.

One other common Mistake with Multiclassing is the timing for it. For example; Martial characters might not want to devote more than a level away from their main class until after they gain access to Extra Attack _ ______ _ I recall one time a player multiclassing for the first time went for a Multiclass Split with Paladin, Barbarian, and Fighter ~ Looking to get really powerful Criticals When they Joined the party at level 8; They ran their build going for the Champ Fighter 3 / Bear Totem Barbarian 3 / 2 Paladin And they then spent the next four levels on Paladin aiming for Extra Attack and the Aura They spent Character Levels 8 - 11 as a Martial without Extra Attack. When they'd have been much better off starting with something like a Split of 6 Paladin / 2 Barb / 1 Fighter and then leveling either Barb or Fighter depending on how they prioritized the Bear Totem vs Crit Range

@OpenWorldAddict0
@OpenWorldAddict0 2 года назад
@@ConstructedChaos It's not just Martial characters that need to be careful. Full Spellcasters get a big power boost at the Level 5 as well being able to cast Level 3 spells such as Fireball. Slowing down your progression to Extra Attack or level 3 spells too much, players can find themselves kind of under the power curve which might make the game a bit frustating and less fun. In my opinion, a 1 to 2 level wait is okay, but more than that should be avoided if possible.

Some points I think were missed or I didn’t hear it. - Saving Throw Proficiency are only ever given by class at the beginning of your Career. The most powerful are Dexterity, Constitution and Wisdom so typically you will get one of these and one other. - Lingo:”dip” a dip is jargon term meaning taking a level or two in a class. If you want to take three I have often hard that called a 3-level dip - Why dip? Because most classes and subclasses in D&D give you the biggest boost in the early levels of the subclass. Also, some classes give you a good starting bonus for that one level that you will have even if you don’t stay in that class. Fighter Weapons and Amor proficiency, Cleric subclass and channel divinity. sorcerer giver you subclass perk, multiple cantrips and Con save and Rogue 4 skills and two expertise. - What is the cost of Multiclassing - the maximum level for a character is level 20. So by simple math, if you multi class you will limit the chances of getting powerful capstone abilities and (possibly) spells. - Psychic Power - In the entire game only two classes Psi Warrior and the Soulknife have identically named “Psionics power” points - these don’t stack. - “comes on line” - lingo. This means your multi class now will do what you imagine it to do. This is frequently an issue as sometimes it may take 5 or even 7 levels to have the idea happen. So if that is what you are excited for and you are at level 1, it may take a long time where you maybe are less capable the. Others and certainly you will be less happy. When you are planning take this into account and make sure both the DM and other players know what is going on with you and your character. -MAD and SAD (lingo) M.A.D. - Multiple Attribute Dependent - usually meaning you need 2 or more of the 6 attributes of you character to be high. This makes a build idea hard to pull off since everyone needs an serviceable Constitution score as well. S.A.D. - Single Attribute Dependent - usually you can make your most build be largely powered on one attribute. Usually this makes a simpler play experience. If you can get SAD typically things run better. - Magic items and Feats - this is a nitpick but if you have a item that requires you to have a class and you have it in your multi class then you can use that item. So if you get the All Purpose tool, and have a level of Artificer then you can use it but if you just have access to Artificer spell list via a feat you can’t. On the other side Eldrich Adept will only let you get Eldrich Invocations that have not perquisites unless you are a Warlock that has access to the prerequisite on your own. Lastly and most importantly Don’t go it alone. Many common multi classes already have been looked at and if you have one you like do a search on the base classes and see what others have said and done. Make sure you share this research with your DM (ask if they need to see it before they approve the multi).

@@ConstructedChaos a little extra note on the fighter and Rogue psionic classes: their psionic powers just don't COMBINE. They don't merge into one pool like spell slots, but they also don't combine destructively like channel divinity does where you actually lose uses (1 from cleric and 1 from paladin? Too bad, you only get 1 total. Such a bs rule, and dms should absolutely house rule that to stack up more uses imo) so the psionics just give 2 entirely separate pools that use the same name but work for diff abilities, the features don't mix with each other at all, but if you can manage the resource confusion the subclasses actually do work rly well together in a multiclass

Another HIGHLY important note with Multiclass casters The spell attack bonus and spell save DC it's important to remember what class you got the spell from because a wisdom caster and charisma caster multiclass for example, bard's Dissonant Whispers uses Charisma, Cleric's Bane will be based off wisdom and those might be different save DCs

@CitanulsPumpkin
@CitanulsPumpkin 2 года назад
When choosing classes and subclasses for a character to multiclass into there are 2 important things to consider. 1. How their Spellcasting works together. 2. How their action economy works against each other. Dipping into multiple caster classes gets you access to a fantastic array of low level spells, but it can block your access to higher level spells. More importantly, the multiclassing minimums for casters are their primary casting stats. So even if you have a 13 for that class, your spell save DC and spell attack bonus for spells from that class will be terrible. Consider what requires a save or attack roll vs what just works when learning or preparing spells. How many different damage equations do you want to pick from each turn. Action economy is perhaps the most important mechanic to consider when looking at the features a class or subclass gives. Every turn everyone gets 1 action, 1 move action, 1 bonus action, and 1 reaction. That is the hard limit on every character. Extra attack and spellcasting are both great, but more often than not both eat up your main action. Monk and ranger are ideal multiclasses for each other when you just look at their stat requirements, but monk is heavily dependent on using their bonus action each turn and only 2 ranger subclasses don't demand that you use their bonus action trick every single turn. As it stands, if your core idea of the ranger revolves around using hunters mark or favored foe then you should never multiclass into a class or subclass that does anything with its bonus actions. Funnily enough, certain subclasses that are considered weaker picks for their base class make fantastic multiclass picks for these reasons. 2 levels of war wizard gives infinitely more power and utility to every class with extra attack than the war wizard by itself gives to any wizard. 1 to 3 levels in Fathomless warlock gives a fantastic set of tricks to any class that almost never uses its bonus action.
@ConstructedChaos

Well said!
@leodouskyron5671
@leodouskyron5671 2 года назад
(Amplification) I love what you are saying but I think it is pointing out your multi class should have a goal. If you are multiclassing are you trying to enhance your one class with another, merge two subclasses or Make a character effect. And you have to know which. Lets go to Monk and Ranger. I think you can do it but not if you are trying to make both a subclass choice. If your goal in being a monk was to kick up the monk speed to add to that of a Gloomstalker ‘s burst - that works. (Adding Monk 2) If you wanted to be a Kensai but have a reliable way to add some damage by picking up Ranger for when your Ki points run out - that works. (Ranger 2) But If one wanted to add Kensai for the Kensai shot (monk 3) to a Gloom stalker (ranger 3) that would cause a conflict because it takes two turns to use both subclasses damage. But if you replaced either for a rogue you get a TON of bonus actions, it works because you rarely them all the same situations as the Ranger or Monk abilities at the same time. (Letting you easily disengage with either after you attack). An effect would be the famous Warlock 2 - Sorcerer 2. Where you convert your pack slots to charge your Metamagic.
@CitanulsPumpkin
@CitanulsPumpkin 2 года назад
@@leodouskyron5671 Yeah, the mechanics of each subclass can be reflavored to be anything. The lore behind each class is just fluff and it should never be used as an excuse to veto a character build. But when you strip away the fluff you are left with the mechanics, and a lot of mechanics don't work well together. Monk gets something like 6 things to use their bonus action on at level 2 and 4 of those things require Ki points. Three of those things are stuff the rogue gets for free. Two of them are where half the monk's damage comes from. I personally despise nova builds so I won't waste time on gloomstalker, but there are certain ranger subclasses that work with monk and certain ones that don't. Horizon Walker and the Tasha's Beastmaster redesign are great ranger subclasses, but their damage depends on using their bonus action to trigger a thing each turn. Also, Horizon Walker has a stronger focus on mobility to the point where the only monk that could help it in that area is shadow monk, but the levels needed to get the key mobility features from both subclasses are too high. By contrast rangers like Fey Wanderer and Swarmkeeper don't rely on their bonus action at all and give a monumental amount of benefits with just 3 levels invested. A shadow monk with the first tier of Swarmkeeper abilities can be anywhere on the battlefield and they can move their main target all around the battlefield as they please. If your DM is fun and varies up their combat arenas with hazards, bottomless pits, and pools of whatever nasty goo they can think of then a Shadow Swarmkeeper combo will do you infinitely more good than any gloomstalker kensai combo.

All of that is excellent advice. I'd also add Concentration as a resource that's limited that you have to consider, though it HOPEFULLY lasts for 10 turns (or even longer). If all of the features you're trying to enhance require something that takes a Bonus Action and your Concentration to effect, it's either not going to work, or it's going to severely drain your resources. If a spell or class feature requires your Concentration, you can only have one of them active at a time, And if you take damage, you need to make a Constitution check to maintain Concentration, or you may have to start over at the beginning, using a Bonus Action to initiate the spell or class feature. That comes from hard-won experience multi-classing Rangers, who can't even poop in the woods (even in their favored terrain) without needing to use their Concentration.

Funny thing is, I've always built MCs like your final statement says. Tying the parts to a cohesive Backstory or to the progression of the Campaign. Example of the latter part: as a Blood Hunter Assimar, I was in a Campaign that ended up in the Shadowfell. Whist traversing, I came across an agent of the Raven Queen. Because I despised Undead, the Agent became a Longsword and assisted in my endeavors back in the Material World. Thus MC'd into Hexblade Warlock. Another was a Wizard who would do anything for knowledge, she was handed a book by a dubious ally of the group (established prior to my involvement). She then MC'd into GOOLock (the book turned out to be the Necronomicon).

Tip from someone who really enjoys calculating out all the advantages/disadvantages of multiclassing: familiarize yourself with spreadsheets! Google sheets is free to use, and you can easily make multiple charts to help you compare the overall strengths of different paths for multiclass options so that you don't accidentally corner yourself into a weak character at later levels. It takes about an hour to fully chart out a level 1-20 character multiclass, and you can see how powerful it will be at each level, and which class features you will have access to at each character level. It's a bit of work, but well worth it in my opinion, since you'll know for sure that your multiclass will be rewarding without suffering any of the negatives of multiclassing!

Multiclassing spellcasters is especially tricky due to the 'quadratic' scaling effect. A 5 wizard/5 sorcerer will have a TON of prepared spells at any given time, but will lack access to 4th and 5th level spells, which sits in the 'sweet spot' for powerful and useful effects. In a game where combat may only last at most a half dozen turns, having that much spell access starts to work against you unless you're completely devoted to being a spell-monkey full of utility spells at all times. While you CAN upcast and metamagic fireballs, a cleric or druid that multiclasses may significantly delay access to Revivify, which your party may not appreciate.
@ConstructedChaos
@ConstructedChaos 2 года назад
It’s actually quite interesting! Someone else in the comments pointed out that sorcerers can actually learn spells of any level they have slots for. Seemingly, that would allow a wizard 5 / sorcerer 5 to have 4th and 5th level spells! As discussed in that thread, I don’t think there’s a concrete ruling for this but I’d say that it works at my table! Still, you’re very right. Multiclassing spellcasters effectively can be very tricky!

Something i always add for DMs. If you are at a home game, play around rule of Cool more than the actual rules. Your player wants to play a Barbarian Monk? Offer them to drop dexterity from their required stats, and allow their AC to be 10+Con+Wis. It's not overpowered mechanically and it might make a very unique character concept. There are many multi-classes like the above that don't mesh because of a technicality. Don't sweat the details if your player has a cool character concept.

I'm running a wood elf with the urban bounty hunter background with my classes and levels being level 6 rogue assassin and a level 5 beast master ranger. So a related question, I'll simplify it a bit if my rogue for example had 12 strength, then finds and equips a belt of giant strength, can he than take his next lvl in barbarian (because the item increases his strength) or are items irrelevant to the stat requirements for multiclassing? (Original idea: normal human +1 to all stats 8str, 16dex, 8con, 8int, 16 wis, 16cha armorer artificer for 14 lvls pump dex, cha and wis to 18 create the following infusions with replicate magic item: amulet of health "sets con to 19", headband of intelligence "sets int to 19" and belt of giant strength "sets strength to 21". Now your lowest stats are 18 and now you multiclass lv2 into paladin and ranger and baffle anyone that doesn't know how you got these impossible stats)

@@woutvanostaden1299 I'm not 100% on 5e, but in 3.X RAW you needed to have the scores 'permanently'. an item wasn't sufficient. You had to start with the required roll, gain it through your +1 each 4 levels, or gain them inherently (say, through Wishes, or certain prestige class features). As a DM, I did allow a character to play as an 'ascended' wolf with a headband of intelligence, but I warned them that the Rule of Cool had some interesting problems for the wolf if the headband ever came off (as in, wolf was now just an animal, and would *not* re-ascend if the headband was put back on), *and* I pointed out the wolf didn't have the option of using weapons, and would need gear specifically designed for him. I wouldn't have allowed it at all if I didn't have the Savage Species book, and if the player in question wasn't both a reasonable person and a skilled roleplayer.

2:11 RAW is "To qualify for a new class, you must meet the ability score prerequisites for both your current class and your new one...", so I think a RAW-compliant policy would be to allow additional levels in a 2nd (or 3rd, etc.) class that has already been entered, even with reduced attributes, since it's not an attempt to qualify for a "new" class anymore. Yep, this is the info I was going on! I enjoy multiclassing a lot, even though some of my friends think it's not a great idea. My multi-smiting battlemaster/paladin begs to differ... then again, I fully agree with multiclassing due to game events/roleplaying instead of purely for stats! Celith's mother was a paladin, her death made big fightgirl Celith rethink some of her actions and take up the mantle. My halfling paladin found herself having to sneak around to help oppressed people get by since we're under the rule of a tyrant, and ended up dipping into rogue for the expertises and for the stealth, not just for the extra sneak attack (and the joy of calling Sneakasmite! on a crit). My arcane trickster rogue began studying under a fey for better understanding of magic, I could've gone with feypact warlock and I'd have had the justification for it, but the guy is distrustful and fiercely independent, extremely curious and too smart for his own good, and I managed to get a wizard's wand and spellbook, so wizard was a much more obvious choice to match his personality. Is it more efficient? Hell no! But my cowardly thief is a full utility rogue who now gets to predict the future and help his allies in combat, have all the enchantments and illusions needed to infiltrate anywhere he needs to go, and I have a nifty owl who can scout ahead, see in the dark, deliver messages and cast touch spells if needed. I sometimes have thoughts about multiclassing my warlock (infernal bladelock), but I'm not entirely sure what into. Ah, well...

Oh my favorite multi class was a lvl3 revised ranger beastmaster lvl 7 gunslinger fighter we had gotten 1000gp to go to the enchanter and everyone had enchanted things so 700 was left. I got the enchanter to put a +1 shield on 37 bullets. When they shot the +1 blocks the black powder explosion pushing the projectile down the barrel faster. Thus the bullets will go through multiple enemies if lined up, 15 foot of objects, and ricochet off solid objects 2 times. They also do +4 extra damage. Thus my character started trying to trickshot enemies. Shooting through cover, lining up 2 to 3 enemies, chasing someone down a spiral staircase and shooting the walls to have it ricochet down the stairs hitting them.

My group actually does a homebrew that technically started as a misinterpretation of the rules, but we ultimately decided we like this better and run with it. Determining spells known/prepared we have it so you can take spells from what your multiclassing spell slots give you. This is because under every spellcasting class it says "you may prepare/know a spell for which you have spell slots". So we read it and went "Well, I have 4th level spell slots, so I can know 4th level spells." And that's the way we've stuck to it.

I can't remind a single instance of her using a spell the Rogue couldn't, the only thing i remember her doing that was funny was using the Conjuration subclass, since i allowed the spellcasters to attack with a Mage Hand (because i was unexperienced), so she conjured random weapons outta nowhere and used her invisible Mage Hand to throw them at the enemies like freaking Gilgamesh from Fate. It was honestly quite awesome, and it didn't make her much weaker, since we were completly noob and used a ton of stupid homebrew that allowed them to be absurdly strong (i barely even read the book at the time, so i kinda allowed them to go "screw it, i'll be god"), but got, it that multiclass was useless.

Depends on the base class. Some classes just fall off super hard at a certain point, and can get genuinely unfun in a party that is overall doing better, or that lacks certain elements. Barbarian, for example. Barb works fine levels 1-about 8ish, but after that, the class is essentially stagnating without a really good subclass. I'd almost always reccomend the player take some Fighter around then, or maybe Ranger or Paladin if they qualify for it. And it's never too late to turn a Monk around into an underlevelled Ranger or Druid. Other classes do just fine and may as well be left alone. There's also a few 1 level dip classes that really do work wonders. Hexblade, Life Cleric, Fighter/Paladin at level 1. But, yeah, especially for characters that actually have to play through the nightmare that is, say, a Sorcerer 3, Warlock 1, Barbarian 1, it's painful to watch. It's easy to lose sight of how the character is going to play NOW versus how good they'll be at high levels.

Yeah the base class doesn't get much cool stuff but that's when cool Subclass features start kicking in. I digress. Let's not forget about the "inverse" of the 1 level dip classes; Classes that have level 20 abilities that are so shit that you'd universally end up with a more powerful character by taking a 1 level dip in anything. Warlocks, Monks, Sorcerers, Ranger, I believe are classes that have garbage level 20 abilities.

@@Zulk_RS We can agree on one thing. I don't think the Monk falls off at later levels either. Monk falls off at level 1. Then never gets back up. There are a few barb subclasses that breathe life into the basic Barbarian, but those are the exceptions, and few of them are as nice as Action Surge, a fighting style, a couple spells off the Ranger or Paladin lists, or hell, committing to the Paladin to get the aura. I know I'm happier with a Barb 8/Paladin 6 than a Barbarian 14. Oh, and I agree on most capstone abilities being worse than dipping into something like Warlock, Cleric, Sorcerer, Wizard, or Fighter.

I would add that RAW, it's unclear whether you can use Pact Magic spell slots gained from Warlock to use class features like Alchemist Artificer's Elixer or Ranger's Primeval Awareness. The multiclassing rules say you can use them to cast spells, but say nothing beyond that. However, Jeremy Crawford did say that Paladin's Divine Smite is allowed to use Pact Magic spell slots. But allowing all features to use them opens up a balance issue with Sorcerer's Flexible Casting, creating the infamous CoffeeLock.
@ConstructedChaos
@ConstructedChaos 2 года назад
I would say that it’s mostly clear that you CAN use those slots for elixir or primeval awareness. Those features simply say that you use a first level spell slot to activate the effect so I don’t see why not. As for the coffeelock combo, I think that’s just something that inherently exists in D&D now along with a bunch of other weird mechanics. The key is to act in good faith with your group and not break games with obvious loopholes like that unless your DM enjoys pain.

In a curse of strahd game I mixed oath of the ancients paladin and forest Druid together. gave it a like not because i don't know about all this stuff but because i like that you're putting multiclassing out there in a positive light amidst the purists who pull it down even when the numbers say that for the most part multiclassing is optimal and for other players, fun. in terms of RP difficulty, personally what we do at my table is if you're multiclassing due to story then yes you have to give a reason for it. but if you have a multiclassed build in mind from the get go, we just say it's your own unique class and each multiclass level you gain is simply levelling up in your unique class. characters don't know that they are a fighter 1, wizard 1. they just know they have some martial skill and study bits of the arcane. people homebrew classes all the time. what's wrong if a player has his own unique class using what's already official? Still, DMs may want to set multiclass limits as multiclassing is powerful like at our own table we set a 3 class limit. next another distinction we make is flavor is free. like if someone wants to play a death domain cleric, but doesnt like the negative, evil theme, they can still play a death domain and re-flavor it to something lets say more positive like a cleric more concerned with the afterlife or repentance before death. having an RP concept shouldn't limit you to what classes you can choose. everything can be re-flavored. this brings me to my last point. a build is not your "character." your bonds, flaws, background, personality is your character. being a wizard/warlock isn't your character. that's just a set of tools/resources/skills you've acquired over time. essentially, a build is a stat block the same way monsters have stat blocks. How you RP that wizard/warlock shouldn't be beholdened to the traditional themes of that class. you don't have to be bookish. you don't have to make a pack with an otherworldly being (it could be with a plane like the shadowfell for hexblades). IMO the best way to create a character is to create a build you will have fun playing not caring for any RP implications. then create a backstory/character that you want to RP regardless of what classes may fit in it. then find ways to fuse the 2 together into a coherent avatar that you will have fun playing in any of the 3 pillars: combat, social and exploration.

An interesting note about spellcaster mutliclassing: Sorcerer is THE ONLY caster who's spells known or prepared segment of the spellcasting feature DOES NOT SPECIFY that it must be spells for which you have a slot ACCORDING TO CLASS LEVEL TABLE (this being the key phrase that makes other multiclass casters only get say, 3rd level spells with 5th level slots potentially). Instead, the Sorcerer feature states you learn spells for which you have spell slots, full stop. "This spell does xdx damage when you reach 5th level, 11th, 17th" does not say character level or class level but you know it means character level because it states "when you reach 5th level" rather than "when you reach 5th level in your class" keeping in mind that trickster rogues, eldritch knights, and feats give non-wizards access to wizard spells, and because some features allow you access to spells from different class lists and specifies that "this spell works like a bard spell for you." Multiclassing to barbarian at that point in your monk progression doesn’t do a whole lot for you as far as I can see. The extra damage die you’d get from raging is only for strength-based attacks (which you may not want as a dex-based monk) and the damage resistances you get would seemingly conflict and overlap with the Monk’s 18th level ability (which is arguably better than raging). I feel like if you multiclass those two, it could be more beneficial to do it earlier rather than later. However, the concept itself is fun! Honestly, I just wish the cannon scaled up better with Art. levels, or you gained access to a second turret sooner if for nothing more than the flavor of being reliant on your tech vs. your own abilities. Thank you for taking the time to reply! Best of luck and good fun on your Arty build.

When it comes to the crunch of the game, it makes sense, but philosophically, I think every hero should be multiclass in some way. I've been trying to create a system where players Unlock the features/parts of classes not just by leveling up, but also by doing actions. Still trying to figure out how to keep track of it all.

My multiclassing experience is from the older editions of DnD mostly involving 3.5. One thing I have always debated regardless of edition is is it better to multiclass in the same area like martial or caster or try to combine them. For me, the rogue and bard work more utility even though bard does have some spell casting. I will be running a 6th level Summoner (Conjurer) amethyst (gem) dragonborn. To help with the lack of armor, I picked up dragon hide from Xanthar. What would be a good multiclass option? Lowest stat is 13 Charisma. The party is heavy martial\front line and decent on healing. One view I always took over multiclassing is you don't abandon one class to go to another but more of trying to do both at once. This allowed me to level up whatever class I wanted at any given time instead of being forced to level up my new one since I may only want to take one or two levels of this new class.

Hmmm always hard to know what would be best for someone else’s build! But if your party is mostly frontline and has good healing options, it couldn’t hurt to consider dipping some warlock to get those extra slots and an Eldritch blast that you can hurl from the back while your summoned beasties keep you safe!

In 5e, the usual tactic is to try to multi-class classes that rely on the same primary attribute (ex. Cleric/Druid + Ranger WIS, Rogue + Ranger DEX, Paladin with any of the Charisma-based casters -Bard, Sorcerer, or Warlock). If you've got a 13+ in everything, be whatever you want to be, You are The Chosen One.

What would be a good multiclass option? Lowest stat is 13 Charisma. The party is heavy martial\front line and decent on healing. Then you shouldn't have a Cha stat of 13. This basically means you only got 1 bardic inspiration die, you will be healing for 1d4+1 so basically 2-5 hp with healing word or 2-9 with cure wounds. Your spell DC would just be 9+prof bonus meaning you can only look for buff spells as you can't debuff. That 13 could've gone somewhere else I would like to see the full ability scores you got as you could put it into strength or somewhere else.

Level 5 Sor, Level 1 Hex with an AC of 19 PLUS spells that can further boost my AC? Yes please! Going to take maybe two more levels in Hex to get up to Level 3 and everything else in Sorc.

Oh no it definitely makes sense haha. It’s just a bit complex. I think I’d rather see them simplify all of it by giving all half casters 1/2 rounded down, though. Heck, throw the E. Knight and Arcane trickster in there too. I don’t doubt that this way is more balanced and I’ll continue running it that way but I do think it would make multiclassing more approachable for first timers.

Slightly obvious, but you need someone to teach you your new class. For that reason I use the "Feat First" house rule; before you can multiclass into a new class, you have to take the feat that gives you a little bit of it. You can hand the feat back and exchange it when you multiclass. Minimum Charisma Sorcerers are interesting as multiclass options. Buffs, summonings and most utility spells don't benefit from casting ability bonus, so if you focus your few spell slots on that type of spell you don't need it. Don't try this with a Warlock unless you want to forgo Eldritch Blast. One NB. Multiclass Druids still can't wear metal armor! 5e almost completely got rid of any concept of character disadvantages; the Druid's limitation is one of the few exceptions. It clearly overrides proficiency, so should continue to do so regardless of a character's other classes. Lastly, it's not always obvious whether a class ability improves with class level or character level. Access to powerful Warlock invocations? Druid wildshape special movement types? In most cases the limitation is prevent low level characters gaining game-changing abilities, so they should go by character level. On the other hand gaining core class abilities in the first place is front-loaded, so characters could pick up a lot by multiclassing.
@ConstructedChaos
@ConstructedChaos 2 года назад
I like the idea of the feat first house rule! I think that would certainly help to make sure that multiclass changes are at least motivated! And, for what it’s worth, I think those class-specific abilities should work based off of character level. After all, cantrips do. And I feel this situation is similar enough to that one
@patricklyons794
@patricklyons794 2 года назад
One point of contention. The PHB doesn't say that druids CAN'T wear metal armour. It says that they WON'T wear metal armour. Like it's for ethical/moral reasons, like being a vegetarian. Now, I have an issue with this, as it's the ONLY time in the game where the game tries to tell me what my character believes. You COULD say it's a deity/nature thing. If you do, you should also prohibit druids from worshipping deities specifically, and just say they get their powers from Nature, thus prohibiting cleric/druid multiclasses altogether. If you allow them, with a nature based deity, say a sun god, and since ALL deities support the life domain, which grants heavy armour proficiency, then you can come across a situation where a cleric wearing heavy metal armour, takes a 1 level dip into druid, and suddenly HAS to change his mind about the armour that has saved his ass MANY times. And it doesn't even work as a deity restriction , since the deity had NO issues with the metal armour when the character was a single classed cleric. One possible solution is to ignore the restriction for dippers. Say, that if the druid level ever equals or exceeds the cleric level, then the restriction applies. I would ALSO say that metal armour DOESN'T merge into a wild shape. That way, it prevents a plate wearing cleric from wild shape dipping into druid, but would still allow a life cleric of a sun god to dip for Goodberry and Shillelagh spells. I know those can be gotten by feat, but a cleric has a LOT more levels to play with than he has ASI/feats.

@@patricklyons794 I always saw it as, that for the vast majority of Druids, metal armor goes against what they believe in. But wearing Metal armor is not a restriction on their class. So you can be a full druid and just say, "Yeah no, I don't think wearing metal armor is a issue." Then wear metal armor.
