Multiculturalism and Cultural Relativism

Excerpts from a talk by Douglas Murray about neo-conservative philosophy where liberty is viewed as the ultimate antidote to extremism. He also examines the (for me) infuriating results of a relativistic approach (there's no good and bad) to politics and culture, which spawned a nasty political definition of the social concept of multiculturalism that cripples countries' and whole cultures' ability to defend themselves against destruction within - the effects of which we can see today to a large extent in Europe and steadily growing in the United States and Canada.

I would like anyone who dislikes what the speaker is saying here come up with a rationale, unless by the definition of being a relativist you cannot truly from a concrete example as to WHY he is or isn't wrong.

3:22 "Because relativism gives equal credit to the wrong and the right, it can and does end up with a single result, which is that the wicked is unnaturally elevated and the good maligned."

Good speech. To not be able to eject people who are intent on destroying their host nations, or who are involved in severe crimes against humanity is crazy. One recalls Khomeini was hosted in the west before he went and overthrew Iran creating a world-leading terror-exporting state. The west must wake up and start to fight extremists on its soil. The human rights charter is meant to protect civilians and innocents, who suffered, not to render states disabled in combating genocidal maniacs!

I think Chomsky was put in the title because the video attacks a lot of what Chomsky says.

@CMTours732 It doesn't blame the West for everything. Nobody is suggesting Hussein shouldn't be punished, or that the Taliban shouldn't be overthrown. What's being suggested is that we stop supporting horrible elements like the aforementioned, and start supporting the democratic forces, diplomatically, financially and militarily if it comes to that.

Relativism is also called subjectivism. Conservatives are truly intrinsics, which isn't right either. Douglas Murray is almost objective and is brilliant. Objective freedom dot com explains Objective foundation of society. .

Thanks for your reply. It most certainly was not a "different" administration 20 years ago because many of the architects for the 2003 invasion of Iraq (Rumsfeld and Cheney to name just two) were players (either peripherally or substantially) in the Reagan administration. Saying that the U.S. support of Saddam during his most brutal decade then gives the U.S. justification to bomb his country later on to live up to its "responsibilities" is sociopathic, and outrageous.

@CMTours732 7:54 When it comes to Saddam Hussein, the US government gave Saddam roughly 40 billion dollars during the Iran-Iraq war. The Iraq war itself cannot be viewed as a war on terrorism, as the Iraq war was fought to remove a dictator (Saddam Hussein) from the government. In the final pentagon report from 2008, it’s stated that Saddam Hussein had no connection to al-Qaeda.

I've seen no theoretical/ philosophical dispute of relativism or postmodernism here. Need I remind you that most relativist are moral and tend to be utilitarians out of care ethics, this leaves relativism at a difficult place. While we know different cultures or really different people share different ideas and norms (which I think, is a fairly neutral statement) one could argue that imposing a different culture onto others would result in the most utilitarian outcome. Which is a dangerous thing to do, since imperialism has a rough history... Also, yall here like attacking Chomsky for his relativism. Do you know Chomsky embraces the concept of human nature and objectively better societies for all of mankind? the basis of his philosophy embraces the concept of universal and innate values in his critique of behaviorism and skinner. Furthermore, he sees anarchism as maximizing these innate human desires and values. Which I don't agree with and but Chomskys theoretical work is not necessarily tied to his politics. The point is, yall could make perfectly valid claims within postmodernism and still engage in an argument without trynna bring all the philosophically problematic kantian claims. Also on his first point "ideas matter", well, ideas don't run society people do and acting like ideas hold any claim to change is, again, dubious. Ideas contribute to change, yeah, but what brings change is action and you don't have to be a marxist to agree with that, just look at the u.s. politics not doing anything about climate change etc.

@CMTours732 I think the unpopularity and the problems recurring in the attempts to promote foreign cultures into western societies at this rate has proven to be very unpopular, and I think that speaks for itself.

That to me wasn't a denial of it, but saying that there not taking into account they did it to oppose the then largest threat, the USSR. People don't blame Germany today because of what Germany did in WW2, so to say that the then U.S administration in 2003 had no right to remove Saddam because a different administration 20 years ago supported Saddam is irrational. If people want to play it that way, it's fine by me, my then argument is that it gives the U.S responsibility to the Iraqi people.

I search the youtube universe to learn from the wise, but mostly find the otherwise. Murray’s speech contains wisdom. However, Murray must realize relativistic diversity is part of evolution. The paradigm “survival of the fittest” where “fittest” is strength flavored with intellect. Getting down to basics, without strength there is no survival. Someday we may evolve to absolute virtue in some global utopia, but not in our lifetime.

@CMTours732 His assumption of relativism which in the western world is not very new but actually one of the oldest philosophies, Douglas Murray talks in this video about how philosophical relativism in politics (possibly a criticism of Bernard Cricks relativism which is rare if not completely absent in diplomacy and politics). 3:21 - Does (political) relativism give equal credit to the wrong and the right? No it doesn’t, and this type of doublethink statement is very recurring in this video.

Modern multiculturalism can be seen as a measure to implement immigrants (as in this case) in the western world. Many of these immigrants are UN quota refugees from Africa and the Middle East. These are often Muslim (as they come from former colonial parts of the world which has a very hastily put together and frail government based on religious doctrine with conservative values). I do not blame anyone for this as most of the empires and states prior to the colonial period were theocratic.

@CMTours732 He then goes on to state that (such a philosophical problem (relativism) now affects not only our foreign policy, but the very existence of the west at home).. No it doesn’t. He then goes on to talk about multiculturalism in the western societies (which he believes to be a part of relativism). Multiculturalism is a new and impossible idea on a society which either has multiple ethnic cultures or a melting of different cultures into one demographic society.
@Ulrna
@Ulrna 13 лет назад
@CMTours732 that’s not any type of relativism I have ever heard about. What I didn’t like about this video was the deductions, they are too farfetched, and seem to hit the wrong targets. Murrays point about the increased immigration is true, but multiculturalism is just another hype-philosophy which will never work in the long run. There will always be a cultural assimilation in one way or another and multi-cultural societies have often experienced culturally related problems.

I think RU-vid should have another button for propaganda built on misrepresentation of truth, which this video basically is. 9:50 Taken out of context, this is actually a good description on this video. But the agenda of this video is quite clear; the narrator tries to discourage research into these matters by orchestrating his disputed (at best) theories as fact, and then dismissing the absolute opposite (and in the process the hundreds of other theories). And I am against multiculturalism.

PersoAryanism: What is "East" for you? China, Persia or the Arabian Peninsula? I think there might be "quite" a difference. Terms should be clear first before making statements like these. And secondly it's wrong cos when you look at history you'll find certain spots that have been of economic, political and cultural meaning in the past as they are today, like China, India cos there are certain social structures and heritage that supports them to succeed...

@CMTours732 The quota of legal immigrants to UN states is defined by the UN and co-ordinated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees under the UN. Personally I loathe quota-refugees and illegal refugees alike, but I do not let such pseudo-political immigration politics dictate more important political agenda. The current reaction of the west is at brink of a historical disaster because of immigration, the response from the western world on enforced immigration can be devastating.

@CMTours732 Your cleverly written argument aside, having studied political history for over four years one could say I have a lot of problems with people who consciously are trying to misrepresent other theories in these fields, like Murray seems to be doing in this video. The depth of which some people like Murray descend in order to appeal to his (supporters) is pathetic. You can still be against issues like multiculturalism and inapt politics without succumbing to lies and slander.

+IronicKismet Know that, when Europe finally comes to cards for all the nonsense current dragging it retrograde, you are the sort that help topple the whole thing. So long as you can live with that, and acknowledge it, I will glad through the process of democracy, follow your kind into societal collapse, if only to look at your with disdain and hatred, as the guillotine descent. But don't for one moment think, that you relativists get to destroy what took hundreds of years to create, and the shoulders of hundreds of generations, without accepting responsibility. We rationalists will be there at the end with you, and we will not forget!

IronicKismet This is true, when the change that comes are rooted in reality and reason. The change we see today is not, it is basically based in the opposite. No matter how hard you try to hide from reality, it always comes back. Its the same reason the scientific method will never change. The results might, with better tests and equipment, but the method is constant. So it is here. Truth is truth. You can hide from it, like relativists do, but in the end, hidden from or not, the truth will out. Its only a matter of rather it'll be too late, or not.
@IronicKismet
@IronicKismet 8 лет назад
***** Only fanatics believe they have complete knowledge of the truth. The scientific method is fallible because humans are fallible. Personal and cultural beliefs influence both perceptions and interpretations of natural phenomena. If the hypothesis-testing process fails to eliminate most of the personal and cultural biases of the community of investigators, false hypotheses can survive the testing process and then be accepted as correct descriptions of the way the world works. This has happened in the past, and it happens today. Most often, two people can use the same scientific method and get completely different models. For example; evolution has many different mechanisms. Yes, evolution exists but what does that statement mean? It is only when it is put in a particular context that it takes on meaning to some extent and the meaning of the context is in the eye of the person utilizing the context. The act of science most often doesn't produce facts (truths), it is a process that produces continuously better models as the new data comes to light but "truth" is always just over the horizon. Facts, standing alone are usually pretty meaningless unless put not a particular context. So the scientific method might not change but what it produces is in continuous change and there some that believe that in some cases the scientific method might not be of any use at all.

@CMTours732 There is no theory, established proof or even thesis about this, and his outlining is pathetic. There is always a degree of things, for example if the United States was aware of an imminent attack by another state thus conducting a pre-emptive strike, who would then be the aggressor and the defender? Politics and diplomacy should NOT be vulgarized, and he portrays philosophical relativism as something it is not, political And narrow-minded.
