Can you have several Parrotlets (or parrots) and still have them bond with you?
#parrotlets #parrot_bliss
Myth-buster! YES! you can have more than one, for sure.
It's actually good for them because they always have company, they would if they were in the wild. Since parrots live in flocks, they are always with someone in their flock - probably with some rare exceptions.
Similarly, you can be a part of their flock. You have to be like a flock member if you want to bond- that means that, similar to the rest of the flock, you have to spend time with them.
Whether it is Parrotlets or another parrot species, I've always observed that my parrots can have the best of both worlds; they can bond with another parrot and with people.

Can confirm. I have bought a six months old semi-bonded pair of parrotlets in sep 2020 together and they've become pretty tame very fast, even though they were not handfed. Now they're a bonded pair and still hang out with me all the time. You should NEVER EVER keep a parrot on its own, parrots of all kind need buddies to develop the proper social skills, be healthy and happy. you can never replace a parrot-buddy, even if you spend all your time with them.

OMG! How sweet, squeak! Parrots really know their species 'language' and respond! I can't have a Parrotlet on my shoulder and walk into the room with the aviary because they start calling each-other and the one on my shoulder flies to them, leaving me!

Bird hoarder, maybe? You have so many, I have one and it’s my first bird ever. She’s a GCC and I can’t believe how messy they are. I’m a clean freak so it kinda drives me a little insane. I clean her cage everyday which is easy because she’s never in it, so she’s worth the mess.

The little one with the blue tinted head and Grey wings looks so sweet. I heard that parrolets don't get along with other birds. Is that true? I have a Green Cheek Conure who I think would enjoy another bird friend and I was considering getting parrolet for him to hang out with. Would it be better to get another conure?

I think that they see the same ones and recognize that things must be okay because the same ones clearly are comfortable being with me and being on my shoulder. I go to where they are, usually up high, and simply cup them in my hand to put them back in the carrier.

Thank you! I’m glad you’re clearing this up. Lots of “experts” still operating under this old (bad) information that people should keep just one. And unfortunately a lot of these “experts” are in control of rescue organizations, like the one I got my baby from. Now I have a very miserable bird on my hands and it’s my job to figure out what to do.

Another -unrelated - issue: RU-vid is being funny about showing me comments. This one I'm responding to did not show on my phone, but is on my computer and this one only shows in my email! "Sydney The Parrotlet I love your channel. I have decided to get Sydney a companion. We have to get a 2nd (just as large as Sydney’s flight cage) cage for a 2nd bird just in case they don’t get along at first. I spent all day trying to get all of the pinfeathers around his face that a friend or partner would groom for him. He let me scritch a bit of them off, but you’re so right, parrotlets need a companion of their same kind to do these kind of things with them. I feel so bad that he’s got all of these pinnies and I can’t get them! So thank you for being one of the only people to shatter this myth that parrotlets need to be alone. I wish people would stop repeating it. oh, and I got that same carrier off of Amazon. I’m gonna return it. Syd HATES it. He happily hopped into it and sat inside no problem, but when I took him in the car for a ride to run errands, he screamed and tried to bite his way out the entire time. It’s way too small. Maybe ok for only the tiniest of finches to take to the vet." So, if I don't respond, please know sometimes I'm not shown comments. Weird! My little carrier - I can see why your little guy wouldn't like it. It is small. I almost returned it. However, I use it to carry 1 or 2 Parrotlets upstairs to the bathroom for a parrot vapor shower :) - I do use it to go to my mom's sometimes, but Raindrop is in often enough that she doesn't mind. Almost daily for just a couple minutes. Thanks for saying you love my channel! Today Raindrop is going to a tea party with me, I'm excited to take her! That's one problem with the internet - myths or misinformation spread fast... It blows my mind to hear that Parrotlets should be kept alone. I suspect that people feed them fruit, which spikes insulin in humans, so I assume it does the same in parrots. Imagine a kid who has had too much sugar. I think that a Parrotlet, under the influence of too much fructose, would seem very aggressive. There can also be other reasons the Parrotlet is unhappy - small cage, not enough good food, not enough time out of the cage... In any case, I look at my Parrotlets living together - Raindrop has 4 cagemates (and I like even numbers so everyone has a buddy, which means I have to add one or take on out). No issues at all. Happy Parrotlets :) I'm glad you are getting your guy a mate (what's your guy's name?) - LMK how that goes!

I too have been confused by this.. a lot of keepers say you shouldn't introduce another random parrot as they will fight yet so many have pairs and groups of parrots and don't seem to have any issues. Wikipedia has several warnings for some species saying they will fight, even sometimes to the death..it also says in the wild some parrots are extremely territorial over specific trees and will fight any other birds (even larger ones) that perch there! I have a theory on this but may be totally wrong which might explain this different behaviour.. because they are both independent creatures and quite territorial (similar to cats) could it be that people have got adults which have become too independent and territorial and resent another one in their territorial space and so fail to bond? You generally see the younger ones are more tolerant of others and it may be that haven't yet become that independent or territorial? Just like cats though, each parrot has its own personality and temperament I guess, some will welcome sharing a cage and home with another parrot, but some might not.. perhaps other keepers have had (or heard about) bad experiences when forcing two adults together and are just saying be cautious and assume older parrots might not like it. You also have to factor in I think how long you had a parrot and bonding with the keeper. Because parrots definitely seem to be territorial over their keepers often and resent sharing your attention like a child. This might explain why some keepers say if you have 2 parrots young from the start, they're less needy for attention from you and in some cases bond with the other parrot and don't like to be handled as much. Personally if I had adults introduced I would put them in separate cages close together and observe their behaviour in controlled exposure before leaving them together alone in a cage. Just like how you gradually introduce two cats in limited exposure so they don't claw each other to pieces lol.

@@paullangton-rogers2390 I think you’re right, and I am actually in the process of getting another older rescue parrotlet. I will keep them in separate cages, and when they’re both out I will never ever leave them alone together without my supervision, because l do agree they they have big enough beaks to cause real damage. I have a couple of budgies, and they sleep in the same cage. But even though they constantly get into little squabbles, I don’t think they have the same defensive temper and large beak as parrotlets, who are more prone to being able to kill another bird.

@ParrotBliss
@ParrotBliss Год назад
Hi Kate, thank you for watching! And for the compliment! Generally, speaking, Parrotlets are too aggressive and Budgies are too sweet. However, your situation may be different. I would not plan on housing them together, but I would definitely let them out together. Given her experience, she may be more gentle and probably wants a friend . As long as you are supervising, my first guess is that everything will be OK. Some Parrotlets can be really aggressive, some are really sweet. If she is really sweet, I don’t think she will hurt the Budgies. Good for you for getting her out of a bad situation! Parrotlets are one of my favorites, but one of my least favorite things is that, because they are so small, I don’t feel like people necessarily understand how to take care of them. So, I’m glad you are!

I have a boy and a girl parrotlet that are bonded with each other and for the life of me I cannot get them to stop being incredibly scared of me or my fiancee. We are their third home and they are about 4 and 3 years old so we've been told. We got them about 7 months ago and we try to get them out and let them fly around, we try to get them to play and have fun and they just don't want to do anything. They both look healthy and they eat fine and everything. They're just both incredibly shy. They are both very low energy by nature it seems, they like to tear up finger trap toys and stuff and clean each other but that's about all they do. They're in our living room (regularly inhabited area by us) and we have no other pets. We talk to them, we give them treats, we try to play and spend time with them and we just cant seem to even get them out of their cage most times. It's there anything that you can think of that sounds wrong or anything? I'm kind of at a loss
