Thanks. I learned the following: 1. The Fresh Start effect is a concept in psychology that refers to increased motivation and hope when starting from scratch or having a fresh start 2. "Rock bottom" is the idea that being at a low point or difficult situation can increase motivation to take action 3. The "bare minimum" is the minimum level of standards or requirements that a person has for themselves, and focusing on the bare minimum can help to achieve goals 4. Good mental health is important for overall well-being, and finding a balance between work and relaxation can help to improve mental health 5. Setting boundaries and respecting them can improve relationships and overall well-being

My current to-do list method is gamifying it. Achievements, Side Quests and Daily Challenges. Achievements are significant things I want to get done, side quests are usually easy but non-essential unique tasks, and daily challenges are simple chores that I have been struggling with. I also frame each task as if it's part of a game. Might be helpful for other people who grew up on videogames and want to take their life in a more productive direction.

Its crazy cos people often think they cannot cope and get everything done in their life, yet sit there and play a videogame where they are constantly juggling tasks and undertaking different problems - You're are practically doing it already! I think gamifying something is an incredibly helpful way of tackling to do lists/ life tasks. I gamify travel, so I get quite anxious when I have to travel a long way for work - which often involves me going to London. I break down the Journey in my head and when in a massive city like London I feel far less anxious making my way through knowing I have hundreds of hours playing games like Skyrim, Fallout 3, GTA 5 and find my destinations/quests no problem in the game. So when I get out google maps I just treat it like a mini map and set off looking for my quest marker.

The Rock-bottom and the Draft are excellent ones. I think I was starting to realize Rock-bottom, but once again you helped making it clear. Regarding to-do lists, I also like Done Lists. I always do a lot of things on a day, just maybe not what I planned. This way I can still feel accomplished and gather information about what kind of thing I end up doing. "Was I procrastination or did I realized something was important?", "Did I hyperfocus or tackled multiple tasks?", "Does it have any connection to my sleep hours, diet, exercise or cycle?", etc. That way I can hopefully plan my days and weeks better in the future.

I've been inspired a lot by my friend who is a successful CEO/owner of multiple businesses and still somehow manages to spend most of her time with her passion/hobby. She said 'I'm bad at cleaning so I let a professional do it." I've spent SO MUCH time and energy and felt so bad for struggling with cleaning. If I had spent that time and energy on building my strengths (superhuman memory & speed of associating bits of information) I'd have money to pay someone else clean for me. Still, my parents & therapists convinced me that I needed to be the next Martha Steward because I'm a woman. Then I made a rule to not take life advice from people whose life I don't want. So my therapists can continue spending hundreds of hours a year cleaning, I'd rather be like my friend and focus on my strengths & passions.

I struggled to excel in school. Doctors didn’t realize I had a sleep disorder as a child that was diagnosed by me at age 40. OSA made learning with (undiagnosed) ADD much harder. Someone should publish a book based on your videos, and use it to help teachers teach ADDers how to learn. Every single thing you talk about is so real, from the parents, to self worth, to watching or reading things over again to pick up different nuances, to being uncomfortable when asked if some arrangement is ok with you, to reading multiple books at the same time. Even reading about things you’re interested in from a variety of sources is remarkably similar to what I do. As an MD, you will find that if you aren’t afraid to be authentic with your patients, you will pick up on things in their history that most MDs miss. Trust your intuition and gut instincts. Keep an open mind, because we don’t know what we don’t know. The only advice I would offer is speak slowly to your patients so they can absorb your pearls of wisdom. The world is full of wondrous things that you are able to express through your art.

I loved this video! I especially loved the focus on strengths rather than weaknesses. It relates a lot to my goals for myself this year. This year, I'm planning to practice a lot more positivity and give myself compassion. I'm very much a high achiever and have a type A personality, but I have been through a lot and now have PTSD. I am trying to adjust my expectations of myself, let go of timelines, and learn to give myself praise when I am performing under that completely unrealistic expectation.

I love the concepts of using rock-bottom motivation (and raising your minimum standards iteratively over time) and of using "drafts" as placeholders so I can feel like I wrapped up a problem in a little bow that let's my mind move on and focus on other things. Excellent video. Subbed. One thing I couldn't help but notice was that all four questions you chose as examples of thoughts you might have that demand answers were "should" questions: (1) Where should I live? (2) What should I study? (3) What should my relationship with this person be? (4) What career should I have? Something I realized about myself, in case you and others are at all similar, is that I benefit greatly from eliminating "should" questions from my lexicon -- the act of forcing myself to reframe them is so incredibly helpful. I see two related problems with "should": (1) it can be used as a whip to self flagellate because there's a possible implied premise that I am doing things "wrong" right now and there's a "one right way" to be living and doing things, and (2) "should" tends to obscure rationales, reasons, and choices -- if I say "I should do the dishes", that obscures that (a) I may have other higher priorities and don't *have* to do the dishes right now (meaning I may not have hit "rock bottom" yet 😉) and (b) that if i were to do the dishes, it's not out of some abstract sense of obligation wrapped up in a "should" but rather because doing the dishes sets me up much better to cook my next meal. I guess that also goes to this new concept I am toying with that just like an external (notetaking) system can act as a "second brain", the rest of my environment can act as a "second body" -- an extension of my bodily health. So my ability to meet my food needs depends not only on my body being healthy but also on my environment being "healthy" in how it's set up to meet my basic needs. I too struggle with keeping habits, even ones that go to a base need on Maslow's hierarchy, and I have found that shifting how I think about my immediate environment as more like an extension of my body has increased my motivation and also helped me focus on what's crucially important for functionality and worry less about prioritizing maintaining things in my environment that are purely aesthetic. Loved the concepts in your video. Curious if you or anyone find these other concepts helpful.
@aaronbee2710
@aaronbee2710 Год назад
I also realize that framing questions as "should" is often just an easy way to shorten them. It's easier to write when you have limited space "Where should I live?", for example, than "What location would most enable me to achieve X and Y?"

The draft technique is something I discovered for myself last year. I would be compulsively obsessed with something, letting my mind be consumed by it until I came to some sort of conclusion with it, which was very, very counterproductive. I read this parenting article about dealing with kids with tantrums, and it said if you can’t fulfil your child’s unreasonable request, then give it to them by drawing it on a paper, or writing it on a paper. Surprisingly it works on kids. I don’t have kids but I ended up doing this, and the sense of completion it gave me was so… satisfying. I love that I don’t need to fixate anymore.

I really liked your last segment on drafting and using those ideas to help your future self instead of trying to overwhelm yourself during the present. Thanks

I really love the rock bottom method. It goes well with a simplicity mindset. The focus on strength leads to a strong comparative advantage in whatever work you do. The drafting helps you think long term instead of short term. Great ideas Dr. Filips!

Great video! The way you talk is really easy for me to follow with my ADHD brain. Some of these I've been doing, the others I might have to try. I definitely find that drafting helps me get thoughts out of my brain without giving me the crippling anxiety of sharing them.

Thank you for your insights. Especially this idea of drafts resonated with me. As a perfectionist, I can barely grasp the concept of a draft; at least subconscously, I often feel that there could be more and that the current result is not good enough. Your decision to treat your solutions is therefore an easy way to mitigate the always-lacking feeling of finality. I'll try this. Thank you and have a good year 2023.
