Multitronic Oil Change - (a bit of a faff...!)

I finally got hold of an oil service socket for the Audi, which means I can now change the gearbox oil. No idea when it was last changed, so let's see what condition it's in! We haven't had any problem with the gearbox - this is just regular maintenance.
Changing the multitronic oil is a bit of a pain - there's no filler from the engine bay - it all has to take place underneath the car - what a faff! So up it goes again on the jack stands and I squeeze back into my overalls... By the way - I did top up the level properly with the engine running, I just did it off camera. The final level check/top-up is always done with the engine running.
Thanks for watching and subscribing!

CVT filters (on Audis at least) are deep inside the gearbox and are only replaced during a rebuild.

@@ln5747 the update is that the engine gave up due to a bad timing chain tensioner. Drove to long with it knowing it should be replaced. But in the workshop it went wrong with cranking the engine. The chain Jumped. Engine failure…. In the meantime we bought a simulair Audi A6 3.2L with a multitronic again. Lower on the mileage (236.000km) but also replaced the standard filter into the magnefine filter and changed the differential oil (1,3L) i also use a additive in the multironic from (Polytron) what is available in the USA

@@sm7091bs thanks for the reply. What mileage did you get the first one to? Also, I presume by the sounds of it it was a petrol/gasoline engine, not diesel, given it had timing chain? @sm7091bs
@sm7091bs Год назад
@@ln5747 i believe the engine failed at 397.000km due to my own fault. It is very important with the multitronic to change the oil. 60.000km is the interval. I would suggest to do it a little earlier. I am a car mechanic for 35 years so I maintain it by myself. But google on a magnefine inline filter. The original one what is fitted near the radiator on the right side seen from the driving position should be cut off through the aluminum line’s . This one was also fitted in the other A6. And the additive Polytron MTC was also added to the oil inside the multitronic and differential. This product is really a big benefit for the longer life of the multitronic. If you need more info i could give you my e-mail adress. The car was by the way a petrol car. Even the “new” one is a petrol
@ln5747
@ln5747 Год назад
@@sm7091bs thanks for the info. I would be happy with 397k. Mine is 2.0tdi which generally seem to last longer than the petrol. Thanks for the offer, but hopefully that will be enough info and I will speak to my mechanic. Should most dealers/specialists be aware of what you suggested? I have had my gearbox oil changed at 80k miles (unsure if it got done at 40k by previous owner) and about to have it done again. I will keep doing it every 40k miles as Audi recommends. But I shall look at these extra recommendations you suggest. I can see the engine lasting a long time and everything else. The one thing that will fail and probably write the car off would be the multitronic if it fails. Would maybe not be worth fixing. So I will look after it as I still love the car and have no desire for a new one.

So basically: 1. Drain the transmission fluid when it's cold 2. Refill new transmission fluid until it starts dripping out the hole 3. Start the engine and rev it quickly to remove any air from the transmission 4. At idle speed, run it through all the gears, 3 seconds each 5. Let the transmission fluid reach temperature between 35-40 degree celsius 6. Top off the transmission fluid until it drips out the hole again Am I missing anything?

That's basically it - make sure you pump enough new oil into the system - it's not just a case of replacing the amount that came out. Always refer to the official manuals for the exact procedure/amounts - I'm only providing these videos for entertainment purposes - I'm definitely not a professional mechanic - I take no responsibilities! There are MANY different gearboxes in the VW/Audi Group and they all require different amounts/specifications of oil. Basically, the procedure is the same though - it's the details that are different. Some require the engine running for the final top up, some say the opposite.
@Eric36h
@Eric36h 4 года назад
@@GartshoresGarage Ok, vielen dank! According to the repair manual that I have, I can see the procedure is more less the same but I will definitely go by the manual. However, one thing I'm concerned about is that I've heard many horror stories about automatic transmissions get ruined after changing the fluid (if it's never been changed before), have you heard of that? I'm basically a bit reluctant to do this on my Audi...
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 4 года назад
I’ve changed 3 Audi boxes over the years - all were regularly serviced throughout the cars’ lives. I have also heard that certain boxes are prone to failure - with VW/Audi it’s a bit of a gamble - sometimes it’s the engines, sometimes the gearboxes, sometimes the electronics. I’ve only heard of one gearbox failure (in my “circle”) and that was due to never ever being serviced. Good luck!👍

@@Eric36h , Erik, the transmissions that could be damaged by a fresh oil change are NOT the CVT. The others fail because the new high detergent fluid washes the accumulated particles out of the clutches, but, the CVT has no clutches it has a steel belt instead.

It seems based on the number of Multi CVT failures on the Audi A6 B6 you're suspicions on Long Life oil aren't entirely unfounded (esp as Audi themselves suggest the 60km oil change). However interesting thing is, when i've spoken to two Audi dealers about how much oil is required to refill both Audi dealers replied with 7.5 litres. Interesting that you suggest only 5.5l is required (does make a cost difference)

Hi, nice video overall you covered several important points about having the car level and using the correct cvt gearbox oil but you did an important part wrong, setting the oil level. The engine must be running to set the oil level. As you said the oil temperature should be between 35 and 45 Celsius. So after you pump the new oil in you start the engine and with the oil temperature in the correct range you then add oil until it starts to drip out from the fill port. When the oil stops dripping out from the fill port you fit the plug and you're done. Did you notice how much oil came out at the beginning when you removed the fill plug when the engine was off? If you had removed the fill plug with the engine running (oil pumps in the gearbox running) you would only have had a small amount of oil drain out, the oil that was in the stand pipe of the filler port. Your gearbox now has as much as 1 litre too little oil in it. They hold about 7 1/2 litres in total including the oil in the oil cooler and lines and pumps etc. and on an oil change you typically get about 4 1/2 to 5 litres out when you drain it.

The problem with Multitronic gearboxes is you can’t get to the filter without removing and disassembling the gearbox. Other gearboxes require regular filter changes - the filter is located just inside the sump pan. Yes - VCDS does read gearbox oil temperature!

Good evening, congratulations on the video. My Audi is the A4 1.8 T gasoline model year 2005, automatic transmission (CVT). Is this car you are exchanging the same model as mine? If it's not the same as my car, can you recommend a video that teaches how to change the oil. Thank you in advance, thank you very much.

Thanks for watching. While the procedure would normally be the same for most VW/Audi CVT gearboxes, please check the manufacturer specifications, especially regarding the correct oil. Things change over the years and it's always important to check the exact specifications and techniques for your own vehicle. If you're doing it yourself and have any questions, always ask a professional - I'm just an amateur working on my own private vehicles!

Hey, I have a 3.2 audi tt. Wanted to oil drain the auto dsg by myself. But after watching this clip, I guess i'll only do the engine and the haldex. Don't even know were to get the M24 XZN tool.

It is not any worse than changing any other sealed transmission fluid. Just get the correct fluid and don't be cheap about that then you should be fine. The DSG MUST be done every 40,000 miles or sooner. There is a filter up top under the battery tray. There are some vids on doing this too.
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 4 года назад
Yep - Charles is right - it can be done by yourself quite easily - just follow the instructions and buy good quality oil. Liqui Moly is very good and can always be recommended if it's available in your area. Just make sure it's the right specification for your gearbox.

@@GartshoresGarage I have a 09G but I have also considered using Liqui Moly ATF in that too. That would be Top Tec 1800 for 2nd gen 09G. Top Tech 1200 for 1st gen.

But when all is said and done, why does Audi put you through this? A gravity feed is so much easier. I had an Audi 5000 back when, and loved it. Beautiful driving cars. But they don't have the longevity of Hondas and Toyotas, which is all I can afford (old ones at that) in my modest retirement.

Cvt in A4 2007mod working well when cold oil, but when motor temp rising over 60c degrees starting vibrating when start accelerate from 0, but not sensing this over 45km/h. Only at low speed. Also shaking when redusing down to under 35. Seems to be the shift from 1-2 gear. But not anything when cold. Do this gear box have a hidden oil filter inside in addition to the round black one? Can this problem be related to stacked filter? The oil analyse show much metal particles.

Hi Fraser. Very useful video, thanks. I need to replace the fluid on mine as I've just removed the ECU ready to be sent off for repair. There seem to be different colour CVT fluids available and the old fluid that came out is a dirty brown colour so I'm not too sure of the original colour. I don't think you can mix different colour fluids, any advice?
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 2 года назад
If the fluid was very old, it's advisable to perform a series of changes back to back to flush as much of the old oil out of the system - or even better - have a professional flush performed.

@@GartshoresGarage Thanks. I've replaced the fluid that came out with Ravenol CVT. I could only get around 4.75 litres back in and I think just over 5 litres drained out! I'm going to refill again in a few days as I've had to get the TCU repaired again. I'm wondering if there may have been air in the gearbox? Regards...

Thanks! One question, maybe you got a clue? :). I need to take off the ATF Cooler for changing the belts, so I might loose some CVT-oil then. Do you think it's possible to get the lost oil back into the system when reinstalling the cooler tubes over the upper hose hole in the cooler?

That's above my skills I'm afraid! If you can get the oil back in and it's 100% clean, then good luck to you! It would probably be safer to change the oil and do a flush at the same time.

Born in France, studied in US, UK and Germany and now living in the madness of South Africa driving a stunning A4 B8 2010... I cannot find a reliable place to change the multitronic GB oil.. Any tips about the software you used? Where to purchase the pump and more importantly, if it is the same access plugs for an A4 B8 from 2010? Tnx for your video 👍🏻

Hi, thanks for subscribing! The software is VCDS used via a Ross Tech interface. It’s not cheap, but it’s basically the same system used by most professionals. As for getting the oil changed - there are bound to be a few good techs around - check out your local forums! I bought my pump on eBay, there are plenty on offer around the world. As for the plugs on your gearbox - you’ll have to get down there and have a look! Most were the 01J model. Good luck!

Hey, I have a question. This type of transmision does have a filter that needs to be changed everytime we change the oil ?
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 4 года назад
There is a filter buried deep inside the transmission. You can change it if the transmission is being rebuilt.
@vasilestoita1745
@vasilestoita1745 4 года назад
Oh.. I understand. So in the transmission you can fit like 5.5 liters of oil ?
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 4 года назад
It all depends on the amount of oil that was drained from the transmission. In MY case, it was around 5.5 L, others often need more - Audi themselves charge for 7.5. The level always has to be checked at the right temperature. That is the most important part of an oil change on these gearboxes!

@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage Год назад
This kind of gearbox does not allow for "normal" filling. The fluid has to be pumped back in through the sump plug as shown. Also, in order to get the correct level, the procedure must be followed, including reaching the correct temperature, when the final level is adjusted (with the engine running)! It's complicated, but it's the only way!

@nikkcarroll9382
@nikkcarroll9382 3 года назад
I've read that you should shift it in every gear after it's been warmed up then add more fluid. What say you?
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 3 года назад
As the multitronic doesn't have gears as such, that's not relevant here. But don't take my word on it! Regular automatic boxes DO require that all gears are selected after a change.
@markbaxter4226
@markbaxter4226 2 года назад
Hi When you first remove the plug for the fill and level drain, a lot of fluid came out and you said this was great, or correct. So, if the engine was cold, and the fluid not expanded, shouldn't no fluid come out when the engine is cold?
@christianp9128
@christianp9128 2 года назад
Reason for this happening is because the fluid is sitting at the bottom of the transmission and pan. Level should be above the drain tube. Once the transmission starts and circulates the fluid trough the gears and rest of the transmission, the level should be slightly below the fill tube. The reason you need the proper temperature of the fluid is due to the termal properties of the fluid. You want to have just the right amount of fluid in there until it starts running out trough the plug. Remember yiu always check transmission fluid on vehicles with the car running always for this reason.

Thank you for the clear video, although one thing I don't get. When draining the oil from the filling hole, more oile came out then when you checked the oil level after finishing the oilchange. And if so, does the process described in this video, applies to my car? Thank you!
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 4 года назад
Are you sure you have a cvt? I don’t recall any A3 8Ps having them. They usually had the Aisin gearbox which was prone to sticking solenoids.The process is pretty much the same - you only have one plug and the filter needs to be changed which means removing the oil pan - check online for more details and the correct oil and procedures. An oil change might help a lot, a flush would be better. (Or 2-3 oil changes with short drives in between!).
