I can't tell you how envious I am of your couple of days away. I crave time alone and really depend on it for my mental health but only get a couple of hours here and there. I dream of a weekend away, alone, indulging in crafts, reading, relaxing and eating whatever and whenever I want. Keep your fingers crossed for me, that it'll happen one day!

I just found your podcast and I love love love watching the episodes. So far you gave me so many ideas! quilt made from old shirts, Yorkshire pudding, etc. etc. What a lovely hut you stayed in. Like to go there once. Saved the address. I think I now the feeling when you felt a little bit lost there. So excited to be on your own, but when you are, then what.. You are now on my list of my favorite podcasts and I will continue watching them. So nice to see little old England again. We lived there for 7 years and had a great time (me, my husband and our three boys) Hope to visit the country now more since our middle son moved to London for work.

Strikes me Gayna that you have had a long time doing happily for others - albeit friends, family, neighbours, viewers, pets ad infinitum, that you have forgotten how to just indulge your needs. I am so hoping that doesn't sound harsh, because its so not meant to be. Just means it feels strange and peculiar to you. I know you are at your happiest being with your amazing family, being the pivot....just remember the restorative powers of that time alone and take the time for Gayna more often to recharge the soul. It's a wonderful soul x Big lubs to the Margooooooooooooooooooooooo :D xxxxxx

Couldn’t sleep this morning so I got up at 5. Too many worries. Mum in hospital after being knocked over by a dog while walking hers. Lots of broken bones. Son no3 off solo travelling. Thought I’d check in with you. What a treat to find you’d vlogged and from a shepherds hut too. I dream of owning one just like that! I now feel like I’ve had my own little mini break with you. And like you, and thanks to you I shall greet the rest of my gang as they wake up this Saturday morning with a grateful smile. Homebird here too. I just don’t want to go out anymore. Do hope you’re feeling better. Lots of love Sarah xxx

Well that's bloomin' typical ! The same happens to my husband when he finishes months of hard work, he takes a break and gets ill, just not fair. The hut was idyllic but I can totally understand how you were feeling being away from family. Its weird how when you are busy you fit in soooo much stuff and just plough through one activity after another but then when your time is your own everything seems to grind to a stop even though the time is your own ! I have no desire to go out nowadays, the odd meal at lunchtime is really lovely and a treat, I always was a home bird but since lockdown I "cabin up" at sunset and that's me done for the day, perhaps we'll feel different when the clocks change. 😀🕰 Hope to see you soon x

Oh Gayna, I absolutely loved watching this vlog. I've been saving it all week to watch this evening when I knew I could sit down and enjoy it properly. I would love to do something like this ... I haven't been by myself for a night since 2008 and I think it's about time I did it so am going to see if there is anything similar in the Yorkshire area where I live. It was a beautiful hut but the thing that stood out most to me was what you said about time lasting forever, I think that would be the most luxurious thing! Ooo to have a couple of nights with good food, good wine and a bag full of crafts... Bliss! By the way, you're a girl after my own heart...almond croissants are my favourite pastry and About Time is one of my favourite films (although I can't even say the title without filling up - I cry buckets every time!) Looking forward to your next podcast. Take care, Helen x

I just reached the anniversary of when I became ill and spent time in hospital. During my recovery, I have been exploring all things slow and gentle as I work through bouts of fatigue. One of the things I have discovered is neuropathic art. It's making marks (or scribbles if you like) on paper and then filling them in. It was crested by a Russian psychiatrist to help with mental well-being. I'm slightly obsessed with it and think you might like it. X

I absolutely agree! One or two night visits are a mess! Cleaning, food, entertaining, so much work. On the other hand, the shepherd’s hut was lovely. We stayed in one near Oxford that was smaller and a bit more rustic (a meadow to cross to get to the toilet) but decorated in a similar fashion. So luxurious for a shepherd’s hut! Looking forward to your revisit to Ted or Len!

Oh I am the same, with free time! I hardly ever get a chance to get any! When I get it, with no responsibility, I have no idea what to do! I have so much I can do, but what! It’s just me my husband who’s disabled and he wants his time to himself. So I’m used to be alone, and doing everything on my own, but when I get time to myself, I wish I had someone there. I find I just end up sleeping. You looked very sick, I hope you are rested. The shepherds hut, was amazing! I would have lit a fire outside first thing and sat outside for hours, because that’s my favorite thing to do, in all kinds of weather. Than I would have gone inside lit the stove and slept for two days lol! Damn the toothbrush I’m sleeping lol! I love your videos. Thank you so much, you kept me company today. Your lovely. Blooming January and February. My mother used to hate the those 2 months and I didnt understand. Now in my 60s I do - for sure I do not want to go out nor socialize just want to hunker down at home. I think we slump after the bustle of Christmas/New Year, the days are still short and the weather is gloomy. Your shepherd’s hut was perfect but you became sick …… maybe the next time. Or maybe you are better “refreshed” if you have a stitchy retreat with a friend, or friends.

The hut was lovely & I'm glad you managed to enjoy it despite feeling ill. As someone else has said, I feel very strongly that when we've been busy or stressed - even if that is all usual for us in our lives - and then we go on holiday, our bodies often seem to do the dirty on us and we get an illness of some sort. As though it had been waiting to pounce. It happened to me regularly when I was in employment, it happened to my OH - I think it's probably what happened to Toby when you went skiing recently. People sometimes say "I don't have time to be ill" and it's almost as if yes, now you have the time! I do get where you're coming from about socialising & entertaining. I am exactly the same at the moment. Just not interested. I think that's perfectly OK tbh. I wouldn't mind meeting someone for the occasional coffee or lunch but I don't want to start doing the work involved for having house guests!

Aww dear Cuckoo, I can’t believe you got poorly 😩 isn’t that always the way? It did look totally idyllic though… I think I would have had to light a little fire in the fire pit if I’d been there, a good excuse to wear all my woolies and sip on a glass of red! ( although the reality of having smoky smelling hair and clothes does end up spoiling the dream… 😉😂…) I stopped at a wooden chalet a few years ago with a clay lined swimming pond, I’d been dreaming of cold water swimming and it was fantastic ( blumming cold, even in summer) but I can’t wait to do it again! We have wonderful hotel up hear in Derbyshire that has a outdoor swimming pool which is fed by a hot spring and I need to find the time to go more often as the calm it brings me afterwards is sublime, it’s just calving out the you time isn’t it? Thank you for taking us on your solo getaway. Sorry you have been unwell there are so many bad viruses around at the moment. The shepherd's hut looked very cosy although I was wondering about a table to eat at or a comfy chair to sit in. Perhaps they expect people to sit outside a lot of the time. It's very difficult to be on your own when you're used to being at everyone's beck and call. I've been on several retreats on my own which is ok when with I'm with others in the 'class' but once I am in my room I feel lost at times. Also when my husband goes away on music retreats or motorcycle trips I wander around the house. So I try and make plans to meet up with friends or family at least for part of it. I hope you manage to go back and maybe take Toby with you.

Do it once do it right Gayna 🤭🤣🤣 I don’t like wasting time so I try to be as efficient as I can. You were so funny to watch. My children are grown and gone, 25 and 27. I do know how you feel though, being away on your own it’s not something I’ve done much of myself and the first time I was also feeling lost, not bored or lonely as you said but lost 😬 I think you should’ve had a full bottle of Prosecco and maybe you wouldn’t have felt ill 🙊🙉🙈🤣 we live in a beautiful house on the beach in Australia and I cannot be bothered with guests. When someone comes to stay I groan 🤭😬🤣🤣

I feel lost when away from my family & home because suddenly I have soooo much time. So I now find things that I really want to do while I am away - sewing workshop’s at Cowslip Barn in Cornwall, glass blowing in Bath, basket making in Kent and going to places I’ve always wanted to visit. And then having a quiet evening thinking about what I have done or seen and doing my sewing/knitting/reading etc instead of rushing around getting dinner and all the other household chores. Remember you went to the Lay retreat the first time on your own and really enjoyed it, this time you literally had nothing you actually HAD to do, after years of caring for everyone including pets/home/garden, you suddenly have nothing you NEED to do, so you feel lost.

Hi Gayna! Like you said the hut was dreamyyyyy! Looked very similar to the one we stayed in but yours had a more cosy vintage vibe which we both love. So well thought out and yellow one of my favourite colours, and blue which is why i really like the jumper you are making now. You looked pretty poorly, so many viruses going round, strange as soon as you get rid of one, it’s followed by another one! We have both had similar to you, glad you’re feeling better. I suppose you felt lost, you are unfamiliar to going away on your own, i think most of us are who are married or have families, if you went again maybe it would feel more familiar , but i think maybe the virus was already starting which was making you feel off kilter as well, there’s always another time and like you said you did really love it. Looking forward to seeing your jumper and and you again soon. Much love. Suze.❤🧶🛖 xxx

I can highly recommend Danny Gregory’s videos on RU-vid. He strongly believes that everybody is capable of drawing and making art. He has an interesting life story too. I go away by myself and often feel a bit lost at first. Think it’s to do with being out of a routine 😊

Ooh I loved watching this. Funny enough I felt similar during my solo trips to Edinburgh for the yarn festival. The first time I loved every minute but also forgot my toothbrush. The second time I did feel lonely and wished I could have shared the time with someone else. I definitely feel we deserve some ‘me time’ but I think having a pal with me would be even better 😊

I think why you felt lost Gayna, is that most of the time there is structure to your day, - a week day one and a weekend one. Even at weekends, the dogs need walking, the family need feeding, school washing needs doing, so anything like knitting, sewing, drawing, gets squeezed into the odd twenty or thirty minute gaps, that happen in between the other things. So when you have 48 hours of total free time to do what you like, it's like 'what shall I do?', and you find yourself going from one thing to the other without really settling down to anything. I find I get more crafting done when I have little gaps of time that are squeezed in here or there than I do with whole days, if and when they occur, and when they do I find i miss my 'structure'. Hope that all makes sense.

Beautiful lady, this was a wonderful tour. Would it be possible to use the renovated barn as a get away weekly, daily, for a space to hear your own thoughts.I understand that it’s not an adventure, but maybe it could be a hide away. This is also a great opportunity for your boys to learn to fend for themselves. Independence is a gift. 💗💗💗

A good tip I got this week for developing things like your drawings is target only 5 minutes a day and you will be surprised what you do as doing it quickly is a great thing for relaxing you and some days you might look at the drawing and spend some more time but only set the 5 minute as a regular 'to do'. Lovely hut, glad you are feeling on the mend

@@talesfromcuckooland it is just that I have a touch of Asperger's and you pointed out the books but did not notice that one of the books was represented in two editions. It was an very well composed video, though. I think such Shepherds' huts should be mental health promoting rooms of requirement for overpeopled introverts around the world.

Oh, what a lovely getaway! Felt disappointed for you that you felt poorly. You made the best of it though, with your indomitable spirit. I love this idea, and it reminded me of staying with my family on land in the woods as a child in what is now considered a tiny home, a few times each year. Honestly though I always got the heavy feeling of BOREDOM. Now I crave that! I think I would fill it with crafts, as you planned. Perhaps I will try a solo trip to the land for my own getaway (but I am a bit of a scaredy cat). Welcome home!
