Ah, you’re so right ! Embracing someone for who they are, not who you wish they are is such a gift of complete acceptance . Sophie’s mother is an amazingly strong woman. Her response when Sophie came home with her new look and instead of freaking out on her she thought, oh- Sophie’s becoming her true self. Oh I wished my loving mother had that response to me. I’m 55 and she still wishes I was who she wanted me to be.

I agree 100%. I was part of the punk community in my town and my mom was absolutely intolerant of it. She'd throw away merch I'd bought myself and look at me in disgust when I colored my hair or shaved it. She tried really hard to funnel me into the crowd she wanted me in from the time I was in preschool onward. Once I found my place ( the music I loved and the friends I felt whole and loved by) at the end of high school she hated everyhting about it, and it hurt me so badly. (I also didn't tell her I was bi until I was 28 bc of her reaction to simple things like hair color and tshirts lol.) I'm 38 now. I still listen to the same genre and still dress the same (just a little more toned down). My son is 14 and I encourage him finding his own path bc of what my mom did to me. Being accepted by a caregiver is integral to a person's wellbeing and development. I'm glad Sophie was able to enjoy that feeling at home while she was alive. 🖤

When Sophies Mom talked about Sophie being there in her body one minute and then gone the next it hit me hard. That's exactly what it's like. I held my Mom as she died and I didn't so much feel her stop breathing as I actually felt her soul leave her body. You could just sense that she was gone, whatever force or energy made her her left and all that remained was an empty vessel.

Or for dressing themselves or cutting their hair, or not cutting their hair. Or wearing makeup... Anything like that, someone would have to be kinda psycho to begin with. Even someone Taught to hate can feel something is wrong and tend to try to avoid what situations they can with their parents/teachers of hate. @@gravegirl ...Well I suppose it could be to an extent! Goth (goth music) itself originated in the late 70s and early 80s and was derived from the UK punk scene. The word "goth" is a label used to describe people who like the music that ultimately falls under goth and that originated from post-punk. ...And sometimes peoples love for the music does end up blossoming into a somewhat melancholic, blissfully gloomy feeling inside! Other aspects of the goth subculture (fashion, feeling, literature, film, etc) are secondary to the music. Sadness, eccentricity, and difference could bring "goths" together, sure, but the music was (and still is) a key component of unity and togetherness amongst the goth scene. To dress in an alternative way (whether that be in a more edgier style) and to live a macabre lifestyle without listening to goth music would just make you darkly inclined. And there's nothing wrong with that! Sorry for the lengthy comment, but this is just a topic I'm extremely passionate about :D

Natural selection takes care of what fits and what needs to go. Mudd race is inevitable and gives our species a better chance of survival in the long run. The more diverse traits we can introduce to our genome sequence, the better combinations can arise that will help us adapt to the changing environment. Racists can cry about intermixing but it's here to stay and it's good for us. Does this mean it should be shoved down our throats? Absolutely not. There should be no encouragement or discouragement from interracial mixing. Let people be people. Our world didn't populate by remaining static. People moved around and mixed with others, staying in the environment long enough to evolve according to it is why we have different races to begin with. It's not going to stop. I remember when this happened. I would have been 14? Living in Burnley and part of the goth culture there. There was an overwhelming feeling of grief and fear and anger that hit myself and all of my friends, even though none of us had ever met Sophie. It was just so senseless, and so wrong, and I still can't really comprehend the level of violence shown towards them for no reason. It felt like the entire community in the area didn't know what to say, it felt brushed under the rug somehow, it was all just so very awful and wrong. I know that Sylvia (Sophie's mum) did some amazing charity work, and I am still in awe of her strength and dignity and composure. This whole story breaks my heart.

Wot proper does my head in is this took place in the country that birthed this subculture, and recently, in living memory. Those of us in that first wave are only in our 40’s and 50s. - it’s not like they were the first 2 goths in Texas or something. In 80s it was so widespread and common it was practically mainstream even up where I was round Huddersfield - massive. I still have loose photos kicking around from that time. Wtf. I moved to Canada in the 90’s and still miss home, yet the “home” I knew is clearly dead and gone. I’m just walking the halls as a ghost when I visit and new tenants have moved in. I just feel so angry seeing this. We all got our heads cracked open by skinheads for nothing at all to change? Just the same old apes dressed up in fancy words like inclusion ‘ diversity. Whilst you're remembered because what... ...You got your 15 seconds of attention from a few people because of a ludicrous comment? Also, alternative people choose to dress the way that they do mainly because of self expression or even as a coping mechanism - I haven't heard of many people doing it for attention or doing it for other superficial reasons. @ithinkformyself2020. Do You Really ‘think for yourself’? Or is Your ‘thinking’ a byproduct of what you have been taught growing up? Her daughter was a teenager who went to visit a friend and decided to stay for 6 weeks. Her mother was Very Wise in choosing to Not ‘pick this battle’. She knew her daughter well enough, and Trusted their mother/daughter relationship enough, to realize her daughter would return home. They obviously communicated during the 6 week period, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Sophie’s mom was in constant contact with the parents of Sophie’s friend. Otherwise, having zero communication, a parent would contact police to report the child as either missing or a run-away. So, I’m interpreting your comment to mean You would have gone to your child’s friend’s home and pulled her out of the house and forcibly returned her to your home. Good Luck with That! You obviously have No children. If you do, You have not been the mother of a teenager as of the date of your comment. You are thinking like an American. Children in the UK, and the majority of Europe are Not coddled and ‘protected’ i.e. Controlled by their parents like American children. They are given responsibilities and chores at an early age. Many are sent to Boarding Schools and live away from home from a young age. This helps children to become independent, critical thinkers, mature, and develop both a self-respect and respect for their parents and elders. These children are also very confident in themselves and their abilities. Did she stay at the hospital 24/7? No. Do we understand the ‘rules’ of visitation in socialist medicine hospitals? No Again. The mom did state the nurses said Sophie was stable and to come back tomorrow. Don’t throw arrows you can’t retrieve without knowing all of the facts. Your Words, filled with self-righteousness and hatred, are the arrows. You have Zero idea what this mom has gone through and continues to go through. How Dare You spew your disdain and criticism at her. It would be interesting to see how well you hold up walking 1/4 mile in this woman’s shoes. Gotta love your lack of compassion & empathy.

Sophie looked liked a small child in the photos taken in the hospital... so weak & vulnerable. It brought me to tears. I can't imagine the heartbreak her parents have been through, & will continue to go through til their lives end. Her mother is a lovely, strong lady- to put on a brave face for this program & for building the organization in Sophie's name, & going around to spread the word of acceptance instead of intolerance. I just wish those nasty, evil little bastards who hurt her & her bf could be kept in jail much, much longer. My condolences, best wishes, & prayers go out to the family & friends. I hope Sophie's bf, Rob, has been able to heal & move on from the injuries, & the heartbreak of losing his beloved Sophie. Living his best life is the best way to honor her memory, & to show the perpetrators that they didn't totally break him. Also, I give credit to the young girl who risked getting hurt herself to call the emergency services. She had to have been terrified those boys, even though they were friends, might notice her talking on the phone & turn their violence her way. Unfortunately, poor Sophie was just too badly injured. I'm sure that girl will live with the horror of that night for the rest of her life.

I was a “punk rocker “ kid in St. Louis, MO. In the early 1980’s. As a young girl,i my friends and i were chased by what back then we called Hoosiers- usually poor, white, blue collar people who lived in the south city location of the city- threatened, assaulted. A couple friends got trapped and surrounded in a phone booth and had to call another friend to get out of bed, drive up and chase off the aggressors with a baseball bat so they could escape. We, as a group, we’re also targeted and harassed by the police. Sometimes, I tell young punks, goths, etc that my friends and I got chased down and assaulted so that they’re now free to walk about looking how they want to look and they are always aghast, in disbelief that my friends and I suffered such threats. It’s beyond disheartening to hear that 30 years later, that’s still a thing. After a couple decades living in San Francisco and Los Angeles , I thought that society had overall moved beyond singling out “others”. I’m always shocked with the reality that as a whole, we have not moved beyond violence against “others”. Still so much work to be done . Maybe some peoples minds simply cannot be lifted out of hate and personal insecurities. What a horribly boring world it would be if we were all the same : With near sameness, haters would still find something to separate themselves from and find fault with “others.” The world lost a gem when we lost Sophie.

Jesus…when the mom said “She’s becoming who she should be” hit my soul, my mom loves me but it’s obvious she doesn’t like my style or the things i like (i still love her truly) so i needed to hear that :( being discouraged to express myself in the ways i want fueled my personality disorder (already pre-disposed) and the identity crisis i’ve been having for years. we need more moms like her. parents/future parents, i know some of the phases kids go through are weird or strange, but just let them please. if you’re super concerned, talk to them and don’t judge them maybe try therapy if their phase is dangerous. personality disorders are just as dangerous, they’re so mentally draining, and they’re most likely going to pile on top of other disorders like anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar, etc. hardly anyone has just one disorder if they’re diagnosed so the least you can do to help is let them dress how they want, listen to the music they want, etc.

I think all children should be given the opportunity for a second chance. Not necessarily given a second chance , but reaccessed after being helped and evaluated by professionals to determine if they e been rehabilitated. It’s not the fault of a child if they’re born into an environment ( parents ) that breed hate and violence.

They didn't kill her for the reason they said, they just wanted to kill someone, and probably thought they were low risk victims per their appearance. Then when they got caught they felt they had to give an excuse/reason as to not expose their lack of emotions and morality. I would say probably born with that inclination and their environment just didn't help in any way to develop them.

Rest in peace Sophie.💗 My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones. As humans, we share 99.9% of our DNA with each other, how anyone can focus so intensely on that .01% of our DNA that makes us unique individuals is mind-boggling. Such a senseless and heinous murder. 💔

It really infuriates me when I hear these ridiculous psycho analyzers making any kind of sense to that crap. When someone BEATS someone to DEATH it takes time and energy and the evil to continue doing so. They have absolutely no excuse at all and should get death penalty.

how interesting, it infuriates me when scientists are trying to understand things and make progress in the study of mankind for everyone's benefit and someone says they are trying to provide excuses. Your opinions are not better than their knowledge, and I'd wage you don't really, actually, truthfully know what "evil" is, you only think you do.

I love how with all these killer documentaries from the UK they focus a lot of the psychology of the victims and also the killers. It’s much more intelligent and empathetic than then documentaries from the US where I’m from where it’s more and eye for an eye and they don’t see the killer as a human being too or what led them to do what they did.

My neighbour witnessed a deadly assault, when she was a mid teen. It still traumatise's her to this day, 30 yrs later. How anyone could stand by & do nothing or "Encourage" an assault of this magnitude, is beyond my comprehension. I'm glad the b.f recovered physically, but im sure he suffers mentally, just the survivors guilt would eat at him. I am so sorry this happened to them both! 💔 Never stop being who you truly are. This one hit me hard when it happened. I was young, goth. I was constantly harassed and bullied by strangers. This broke my heart and now that it's fashionable to never discriminate against anyone and we have a lot of people who jump on the bandwagon...I will never forgot the cruelty certain people are capable of. I've never stopped thinking of Sophie and still follow the S.O.P.H.I.E facebook page etc.

I agree. I never would of considered myself Goth but I had a huge group of friends that were. They were my favorite people in school. My best friend I dunno of you would consider her "goth" but she could def play the part and I think she is beautiful. Our styles are so differnt. Nothing could chnage the love I have for her. I stopped labeling people a long time ago people are people. goth, punk, prep, skater whatever..... I have been friends with them all and they were all amazing. All of them beautiful and comfortable within thier own looks.

It is so maddening that this day and age, these hate crimes are still happening. It makes me sick to my stomach and as a parent makes me scared. My heart goes out this brave young womans family and friends. She gave her life cause she was not going to leave her boyfriend there alone. She wanted to help him. My heart also goes out to her boyfriend. I can just imagine the PTSD and survivours guilt he must be dealing with. I hope he has a great support system and is seeking help. And I hope he knows that she would not want him to feel guilty.
