Young girl has some learning to do. Her statements display a clear lack of understanding of nuance. If you think "going corporate" has more to do with skin color than background, you are ignorant. Right? He grew up in the trailer park. That's the white version of the projects. He grew up poor as fuck and worked shitty blue-collar jobs. Poor people don't get the education that rich people do. That's because it's all based on property taxes. The poorer your neighborhood, the worse the school generally. Even if the school is predominantly white. The cast system in the US is a 2-tier system. It is based on race AND money. I used to think just like this girl until I moved to Central California and actually met white people in the projects and in the hood.

Saying any white person can just basically walk into corporate America is retarded. I hate the term white privilege because it focuses on race. Of course some people do have privileges, many of them are white. Mostly it's class privilege, hell you can even have language privilege. Do you think a white Polish person with poor English is not going to struggle in a society dominated by the English language? These people have privileges they don't even recognize because they're always focused on whitey

There's a really simple rule of thumb that'll tell you whether a white artist is legit: are they being themself. If they're 'being black' when that's not who they are outside of the music - that's fake. Your Vanilla Ices, Fred Dursts, and Iggy Azelias. People who use hip hop and rapping to express themselves without being something they're not is the way to go. Dan Bull, old Papa Roach, Beastie Boys, Aesop Rock - lov 'em or hate 'em, at least they weren't being something they're not. The anomaly here would be Snow - he's a white Canadian, but he grew up around Jamaican immigrants in housing projects, so the whole Jamaican rap is not part of his heritage, but it is part of his upbringing.
@ECXLEvan
@ECXLEvan 4 года назад
I appreciate you bringing up the "anomaly" here because you're absolutely right but like Snow there are white rappers who's upbringing is more akin to that of the black experience so to call them fake would be unjust. Real recognise real is still alive and true.
@MarkArandjus
@MarkArandjus 4 года назад
@Jeremy Backman Audiences were never part of the conversation. Background was. Vanilla Ice grew up in Dallas and Miami, not a poor neighborhood around black kids, his black-talking persona was fake. He himself later in life said it was stupid and apologized for it, there's a video - look it up.

I'm black... and the amount of racism in this video is astounding.. This woman really said that a white person can just work their way up the corporate ladder like it's nothing.... And rap is one of the only things they have to work hard on.. lol "... Before Eminem the highest selling rapper was Vanilla ice, beastie boys..." No, it was MC Hammer... And since then a lot of black people have been at the top of the charts.. not sure what his point is.. ...and Eminem and Macklemore benefited from being white but they also benefited from making original music.. they made rap that didn't sound like the rap that was being made by black hip hop artists.. you could say the same about beastie boys.. ...anyways... I just think we need to call out ignorant speech wherever it is regardless of the colour of the person speaking it.

First of all idk what your race has to do with anything, and there's no racism in this video at all. No one ever said white people can easily climb the corporate ladder, she said being a white man working in a corporate setting is easier than a white man being a rapper which is 100% true. And Vanilla ice easily outsold MC hammer and before that it was the Beastie boys. His point was that for some reason white rappers once they take off they do incredibly, he didn't take anything away from their struggle or blame them for anything but looking at the sales he's right. Nothing you mentioned was racist, get your head out of your ass

El-P has always been an inspiration. Both as an artist and as a business model. He was rising as I really started getting into the indie scene. His "independent as fuck" slogan spoke right to my core, because he was doing things his way and being successful at it. Then as an artist, he's crafted a whole sonic universe. No one really sounds like him as a producer, or as a rapper. And watching him evolve from being ill in Company Flow (but letting dense lyrics get in the way of flow), to learning to be dense with much better timing..and seeing that same evolution with his beats after going solo. Even when my musical explorations took me away from hip hop for years, his releases would always be ones I come back to check for and always be impressed by.

I've thought this for a long time. It's crazy how race comes into play with what music people gravitate toward or what gets pushed by the industry. I feel it's the same with singers: maaaad amount of incredible soul singers out there, but it's the white ones that become massive pop successes. Like hip hop and soul are a genre, but if you're white and rapping or singing soul - you're pop and can be appeal to a general (white) audience so much more. It's infuriating.
@ABLETONSTUFFANDBITS
@ABLETONSTUFFANDBITS 5 лет назад
what is America's majority if you talk about race? white. obviously your pop appeal would be massive just how there isn't any white Kpop stars, the market is controlled by the masses, it's a no brainer. i don't get why people are surprised by this. same with movies. Another thing to note though is independent labels are not doing it this way, underground has always been the way. in 2019, if you still listen, follow, care about pop music.. you are missing out. talent is never the ones that get pushed now as it takes talent, marketing, promo, a management team, content creators, writers etc to become an overnight success. this way of seeing things could make you overlook talent. like Adele or an act of that size. she is a superstar.. is it because she is white? nah, how many people you know that can make tunes like her? The colors show on youtube is a good spot to find all types of music.
