It's the classic way to have whole rests, in empty measures, like with this program. For a composer, it will often be easier if the whole rests are from the beginning divided into quarter rests, everywhere. Thus it is with the Flat editor, which you online can use a version of, for free, that offers most common instruments, apart, mainly, from quite a number of the set-scenes of drum ensembles. Also with Flat, you have to divide the rests if you want a note to be of a different length, from the beginning. Another possibility is to make a note of the length of an extant rest, then to return with the arrow key and hit the number for the length you want. That certainly will also be possible with MuseScore. The most important thing is that you learn the shortcuts and touch the mouse as little as possible. In such a way, your energy is released for the music rather than for the navigation on the screen.

The program for editing is completely free and very useful, but they also have a website/app that has a premium version that let's you print and download sheets that other people have made.

Break up the rests 1st always! If you input notes without breaking the rests into quarters or eight note rests, it will add that extra quarter rest. You have to replace the rests with the notes after you break them up!

It's a true pain, but it's possible. I keep forgetting how to do it, but I do remeber it has to do with those four squares numbered 1 through 4.

I think if you go to the top left where it says "add," you can add a number of things from there.

To change the instrument click on 'Edit' and look for 'Instruments'. On that tab, you can select an instrument, add it, or remove it.
