Hi thanks for showing this I read about this shotgun chamber and found your video,I have been having a problem growing them because it is hot on my screened in patio.I tried growing them with a kit and then some in buckets but not the best.I noticed now though on my glass patio table in the mushroom bag with coffee grounds and aspen wood chips one bag is really stiff so starting to get white mycellium,so this got me to this idea of finding this shot gun fruiting chamber,thanks.I watch your other show too with the brewing.

Great video I really appreciate this info. I'm not sure who mentioned putting holes in bottom of tub itself, but I've never heard or seen this. I'm glad you didn't do it! I have seen holes in the bottom of the fruiting container sitting on perlite. Or holes in the aluminum foil, if you put that down over the pearlite (and under the fruiting block...). But this was only to prevent any standing water /rot under the fruiting block itself.

Awesome! Those totes can have other uses: if you live somewhere that has cold(ish) winters and you want to preserve foods like potatoes, turnips, leek, carrots etc you can fill them with potting soil, sawdust or chopped straw and keep your produce in there. Make sure the lids and sides are drilled. The soil/sawdust/straw will help regulate the humidity and prevent your produce from drying out or going bad. Stack the totes if you want to (drilled sides, remember?) and stash them in your garage, cellar or shed. The filling material also protects your produce from frost. My grandmother used wooden boxes. But drilling holes compensate for that. I wish I had the room for expansive mushroom growing… if I ever have more room I’m certainly digging up this video! Thanks for this video Derica!

Oh! Plastic drilling technique---- Definitely always tie back loose clothes and hair lol But to "clean" the holes, putting the drilling reverse and reaming around the hold cleans them up quite nicely :)

I'm extremely intimidated by growing mushrooms because everyone is always talking about contamination and being really careful. But I want to try it because it's really hard to find "fancy" mushrooms where I live. I would have to drive all the way across the city to go to the Asian market, and I'm too much of a homebody to do that often. I'd love to try lion's mane, king oyster, and other yummy varieties.

80 to 90% humidity is the ideal range for most mushrooms. A humidity level above that could lead to mold growth.

@PlantLifeYT

Yes. If I’m using kit bags then I tend to use the box for the second flush. That is when you have already harvested the first batch of mushrooms and have cut the opposite side in attempts to grow more. This box build is to create the optimal environment to grow mushrooms.

The box has the moistened perlite in it. The reason for this box build is to create an optimal growing environment for mushrooms. You will have to add your mushroom growing bag either from a kit or made from scratch to the box.

Hi thanks for the video, it was very informative. I do have a question, I’m new to mushroom growing so I don’t understand everything yet, but do all the open holes allow for more contamination? Or at this point do I not need to worry about contamination as much?
@PlantLifeYT
@PlantLifeYT Год назад
Contamination is more of an issue in the beginning of the process of mushroom growing. At the blooming stage the only concern I would have is spore contamination of your living space, but not all species are the same.

Couple questions or comments #1 what is the danger with this setup compared to the Martha setup on spore contamination inside your house? #2 do you remove the grow bags if you need to resoak your perlite? How long does the perlite go before needing resoaking? #3 did you encounter any problems with not drilling holes in the bottom? I know you said you would put it in the description if you did, but people can get too busy or distracted, and I just wanted to make sure of this before building mine. #4 have you had any problems with poor germination ordering your grow kits from Amazon? I know that with seeds, people say not to order seeds from Amazon because they are all dead. Also, I just wanted to let you know that your link for the clear plastic totes is moot, as Amazon is saying it's not available. Thank you for this video, I want to grow some mushrooms at home, but I don't want a big complicated and expensive setup. This information will help a lot.
@PlantLifeYT
@PlantLifeYT 9 месяцев назад
Great Questions! I will do my best to answer each. #1 Martha set ups are best if you are producing larger amounts of mushrooms where spore contamination would be a larger concern. Ideally in these smaller growing situations, along with grow kits you can purchase, you would harvest your mushrooms before the crop produces spores. If you have further concerns you can cover the holes with medical tape that would allow air transfer but filter out spores. #2 I simply check my perlite regularly and spray it with water carefully to avoid the grow bags. If your perlite dries out to the point that you need to resoak it, your mushrooms may be too dry for proper mushroom growth. That said, if you feel you can still get more from your grow bags, then yes, remove them and resoak the perlite. Keeping a close eye on the progress of your fruiting chamber and adding an inexpensive digital hygrometer will help you keep the right moisture level. #3 I did not have any issue with eliminating the bottom holes. I did have many people tell me in the comments that they were necessary but no one mentioned why. Perhaps my particular environment didn't cause the problem that requires bottom holes. #4 I recently did a comparison video of various brands of grow kits and how they compared. There were differences, but they all did produce mushrooms. I've also purchased many seeds from Amazon without any issues in germination. My suggestion would be to check the reviews and use your best judgement in making a selection. I hope this helps!
