I'm new at this but recently had a somewhat successful yield of PE using a modified tub. I live in NC and this summer after harvesting that tub i buried the cake outside in a shady natural area and covered with a light layer of pine straw that was already there. To my surprise, I ended up getting HUGE shrooms (nothing like what i got growing inside) and descent yields 3-4 times with the same cake. I ended up doing this a number of times this summer with different strains with the same great results. As mentioned, the cake was lightly covered in pine straw but exposed to open air 24/7 with humidity being whatever mother nature provided and light watering when needed. There is so much out there in regards to proper air exchange, co2, misting, humidity etc, but I had little to know control over the environment and had much better results. Got me thinking, these things go naturally in the wild, in open air so why do we put the lids back on our tubs and starve them of the oxygen? Maybe a light constant air flow through the tub instead of only fanning 2-3 time a day would yield similar results? Curious to what your thoughts are as to why I had so much better success outside as compared to inside?

I once tried to colonize a grain jar sealed with only a micropore tape for air exchange and what happened was the growth stalled after 20% colonization stopped for a whole week sk I opened it to let the air out and let the lid covering but not sealing and 3 days later it was fully colonized.

This is what i figured/hoped was going on. Heavy pinset, 95+ humidity yet it looks dry every time i take the top of for fae. Every 6-8 hours. My casing doesnt look dry, just dont have that glistening of water droplets across the top. My worry was that if i continue to mist, more pins will form. I dont want too many pins to form that they abort and I get a lot less fruit.

@MycoSage
@MycoSage Год назад
yeah a tub-in-tub setup works great for keeping humidity, but I don't like to use it because to me it ruins one of the main benefits of using a shoebox, which is form factor. To circumvent this, I now simply apply a proper casing layer and it has been working extremely well.

Best advice is to let them fruit where they are. You can add some coir over them to keep moisture. But you risk contamination big time trying that. Trichoderma actually lives in most soils.

I had an idea suddenly, what if you drilled a hole on a bottom corner of the tub, put either a injection or or sealant in it. Then you can put the needles into that, and not even have to that the needle in and out, that way you can use the luer lock to your advantage over n over and not be introducing contaminants?

When you water like this, after the first flush is complete do you continue to get mushroom growth as random mushrooms or a clear obvious 2nd flush? And do you dunk these between flushes when watering this way?
@MycoSage
@MycoSage Год назад
Depends on genetics and harvesting methods, I like to harvest the first flush at once, even if some mushrooms are not fully mature. This way I get a more uniform second flush.
@MycoSage

I don’t dunk, I simulate rain through heavy misting. Also cuts back on side pins this way as you don’t get much water down the sides, I cover it in detail in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MmVxBm6SxMQ.html

Is it necessary to mist if you have a humidifier type thing/automated mono tub?
@harshmoor2280
@harshmoor2280 5 месяцев назад
I thought automation would be cool but I'm now thinking doing it myself is best. I can see when to mist, and can see when to stop to maintain ideal conditions. I can give fae, then mist to glisten. An automated system can't look at surface conditions to be able to tell when ideal conditions are met. Surface conditions are not necessarily represented by humidity levels. My humidity is always 95% except when fae is introduced, but then jumps right back up. I still mist when surface conditions look dry(aka when there is no glistening) I actually ended up never using the humidifier. It never turned on. But if I didn't mist, and just went off the humidifier, ideal surface conditions would never have been met, so I'm thinking it wouldn't work. (Idk because I went for surface conditions). The humidifier is if humidity is constantly dropping or really low, misting gets those droplets on top. If your humidifier is maintaining droplets on top, but also allowing those droplets to evaporate/ get absorbed. Then yeah, it will. But I think in this case it's easier to do it yourself. I think it's very important to have high humidity, but also have that process of glistening beads till gone, wait a little, then make glisten again and repeat.
@harshmoor2280
@harshmoor2280 5 месяцев назад
Basically you won't be able to tell until you do it. There is no "set it like this and forget it" imo. If there is, it'll take a lot of work to figure out for your location. Your gonna have to constantly watch it till and change it till the automation is doing what you want. But you won't be able to have sensors tell you that, it's your eyes. If you can get it to reach ideal surface conditions, then allow that to evaporation, then ideal surface conditions again. Then yes it will work. But I think it's a lot easier to do it yourself. If conditions change, you can change your habits, with automation, youd have to redial it. Which is way to much trouble. Imo.

Why would it last longer if there's more pins? It logically makes no sense. Mushrooms are about 90% moisture, so if you consider that these pins are growing mushrooms they are sucking up water to grow.
@MycoSage
@MycoSage 11 месяцев назад
Yes and no, you are right, and I also mention this point in the video (aka that bigger pinset=more water needed). When they are still pins as shown in the video, yes they will require more water than a tub with a sparser pinset. However, once the pins start to mature more, they will maintain a better microclimate than the tub with a sparser pinset. Thus, they will be much less likely to dry out than the sparse tub.
@MycoSage
@MycoSage 11 месяцев назад
And as long as your grow is dialed in properly, you should not need to mist at all. The reason I need to mist a lot is because shoeboxes are not neglectable in my environment, the rH is too low and I leave my window + circulator on, leading to greater evaporation. But in most cases, up till the first flush misting should not be necessary.

How do you know what's in your multi-sports when multi-sports are made up of multiple species
@Auditing.northern.N.Y.
@Auditing.northern.N.Y. Месяц назад
I don't believe they're made up of different species. Just different genetics. Where liquid culture or agar wedges are actually a clone of one specific fungi or mycelium. Some people believe it makes a difference, they could be correct. I've always grown from spore syringes so idk. I know the spore syringes I made were very close to equal to the ones I bought. Everyone left you hanging for 3 months, so figured I'd try to answer. I'm no mycologyst, but have been playing with fungi for over a decade. Fun fact: when I first started I was growing gt in the basement of a party house. The kids/teens left clothes in the basement that got damp. Before long there was long skinny mushrooms growing everywhere. To look at them, you never would have guessed they were gt.
