It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

I have pretty much exclusively been playing Darktide the last 2 weeks. Jesper Kyd does not miss on the OST. It is just hits no misses. I think it speaks to his concepts that you pretty much nailed the aesthetic just from the music alone. Great react

and this is why having a musician who really, REALLY gets your project is SO important. Jesper Kyd GOT 40k and the Imperium in this track. He knows its grand, tragic, brutal, grimdark and angelic all at once. The repeating warning siren telling you something is utterly wrong, the battle drums telling you it's a call to war, the angelic voices telling you this is a battle in heaven, the electronic vibes telling you it's a techno-mystic nightmare. It's all there. Beautiful.

I say that this game did a really good job of making the music fit the theme of the environment and the whole of 40k in general. The game is based off of the Warhammer 40k universe, which I shall not explain (it's a lot) but what I will say is that the universe (setting) is very dark, depressing, and dreary. But it is also powerful, moving, hopeful, techno, industrial and gothic. The Music of Darktide did a really, really amazing job at displaying that with the music. I would recommend more tracks from the Darktide OST like: Disposal Unit (Imperium Mix)

The name "Darktide" is something of a spin-off to the company's previous work, Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide. Vermintide has you fighting in a Left 4 Dead setting against a massive "tide" of rat-men that frequently try to drown you in sheer numbers, whereas Darktide has you face off against crowds of mutants, cultists, and demonically-possessed. This particular track shows up when you have to get rid of a demon rooted to a specific place using what the game calls "targeted violence". It plays while you are actively engaging a bunch of enemies or attacking the demon itself. Interestingly, if you are not fighting anything during this instance (as in, you have the leeway to take a breather between the action), "Immortal Imperium" is replaced with a subdued version of itself, "The Will of the Imperium", which plays in parallel to the track and changes back when you jump back into the action. I wouldn't really recommend reacting to it since it's pretty much ambience but the de-escalation during moments of peace without outright removing music is a nice touch.

"Red lasers with stuff melting and hot temperatures." You're not wrong sir. Most of the game is set in what amounts to a massive factory visible from space. Lasers and melting and hot temperatures abound.

I heard Jesper Kyd / Darktide was not even nominated for the music category. Which to me is unbelievable. There has never been a producer that captures the essence of the Warhammer 40k universe as well as Jesper Kyd does.

that opening section where you're talking about it feeling like an oncoming tide is probably a reference to the emergence of the Imperium of Man from the darkness of "Old Night," or the condition of the galaxy when there is no unified galactic human empire to protect the species. from that darkness emerged the Emperor, and subsequently His Immortal Imperium, hence the name of the song.

The Darktide OST is all bangers, really carries the game in my opinion. Nothing like fending off hoards of cultists to some absolute tunes like this.

Without diving to deep into the lore of Warhammer, the lore of Darktide revolves around a zombie plague on the planet, Atoma Prime. Paraphrasing off the wiki: For centuries, Atoma Prime and the peoples of the Moebian Domain have been under assault by Chaos and xenos forces from the fringe of its territory that the Adeptus Administratum has chosen to simply classify as the "Darktide." To deal with the Darktide, Atoma Prime has for centuries raised hundreds of regiments for the Astra Militarum from among its teeming masses, known as the Moebian Regiments. These heroic men and women have kept the Darktide at bay for many standard centuries, fighting in what is known as the "Fringe War." A Chaos Cult called the Cult of Admonition has infested the hive city of Hive Tertium on Atoma Prime. They are worshipers of Nurgle, the chaos god of disease and pestilence. When they unleashed a zombie plague and a swarm of Poxwalkers began to assault the lower reaches of Hive Tertium, the Moebian 6th Regiment was redirected from frontline deployment to assist in combating the Nurglish corruption. Instead, the corrupted regiment turned on the people it had sworn to protect and began to support the uprising. We play as a prisoner spared from execution in exchange for assisting in taking back Hive Tertium.

I LOVE Jesper Kyd's sound :) All his music is quite simple progression wise, its more like you said about a wall of sound- an amazing one :) Its so perfectly suited to 40k! Ive known and liked Jespers music since back in my amiga days and the hardwired demo by the cryonics :) anyone wanting to hear a Jesper piece they probably havnt heard look for that - its on YT. Its great, and very familiar in style to his modern stuff.

"WHAT IS YOUR DUTY? TO SERVE THE EMPERORS WILL. WHAT IS THE EMPERORS WILL? THAT WE FIGHT AND DIE. WHAT IS DEATH? IT IS OUR DUTY." This OST is as powerful as it gets and really gives people a glimpse of what the warhammer 40k universe is about, you dont even need to be into it to get a picture of how brutal it is just by hearing this.

The two standout tracks for Warhammer 40,000 is "Children of the Omnissiah" From the game Mechanicus and "Disposal Unit (Imperium mix)" from Darktide. This song to me audibly describes the setting of the game more than both the above mentioned songs though. Warhammer 40,000 is a setting set in the year 40,000ad. But where science prevails in our own timeline. Religion wins out here. The main faction, the Imperium of Man is a parody of the Catholic Church's zealotry and fanaticism from the dark ages but thrown into a sci fi setting of power armour super soldiers mowing down aliens for their God-Emperor.

Hey Tony! Just wanted to say that you are awesome and having blast with musical adventure through different genres. As a person who is interested in musical breakdowns and not been trained or is not a musician myself, love to hear your insights on musical pieces. Also variety is more than welcome, since often they are out of my typical playlist. Many other channels are focused on emotions or how particular part/ movement feels, which I can figure it myself, even if I am a filthy musical casual ;) Always fun to have your breakdowns on technical side, even if im not 100% familiar with how complex it is. Seeing as I haven't seen a comprehensive context for the track and the universe, I figured I'll share my thoughts on the matter. Darktide is set on the universe of Warhammer 40k where players play as agents of the Imperium of Man, the one and only faction of humans against the threats of demons, aliens, and mutants, and has VERY HEAVY extremist religious themes centered around the rotting corpse of the God-Emperor of Mankind with the Imperium itself on a steady decline for the past 10,000 years. The game is set on one of the Imperium's hive worlds and pits you against a faction of demons of the Chaos God Nurgle whom specializes in plagues and diseases along with cultists and citizens he has influenced prior to the game's intro. This particular track plays on missions that requires purging Nurgle's pox blights that is contaminating important sections of the city and the objectives for this mission are to clear 3 sets of blights and then hold out until extraction arrives or is allowed while endless hordes of demons/infested are besieging the players. In the highest difficulty available, it is common for teams to reach a combined 2,500 kills on average hence the "tide" in Darktide. There's just A LOT of things being thrown at you at any given time especially on scripted infinite horde sections such as this one. As for my interpretation of the soundtrack, the drums perfectly symbolizes our march towards the blights, the "heavy synths" (I actually don't know what instrument makes that sound just after the drum section) warn us of the impending horde, the pipe organ symbolizing the start of our "cleansing" of the infection while the high gothic choir chanting is protecting us from the dark whispers as the faintest of whispers from the Chaos Gods can turn you into a demon. That and the Imperium is VERY, VERY, VEEEEEEEEERY big on their religion. It is my headcanon that the choir section is actually from one of the many faithfuls back on the ship praying to the God-Emperor to protect the strike team. Your reaction was very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to more Darktide and Destiny 2 tracks!

Darktide: Disposal Unit is where it's at. Boss fight music meets industrial cult. Maybe Nightsider if you prefer the synthetic side of Jesper Kyd's arrangements. Or if you just want to bop a little, try Warp Traveller.

It's going to be difficult to give you context. I would actually recommend watching Bricky's warhammer 40k every faction explained, you don't need to watch all of it, but if you can make it through the first 40% you'll have enough gist to understand the dark religious and hopeless themes of the setting.

Darktide and Mechanicus both have the best OST´that Warhammer has to offer imo. Both capture their respective part of the Imperium and both are fucking glorious. The whole Darktide soundtrack has an "alarm siren" kinda theme going on and i love it, the sense of urgency is mixed in pretty much every song and i love it.

This music piece is a perfect representations of the Imperium of Man in WH40K, because of how it mixes the more electronic/industrial with Choir/Organs. As it meshes so well with the setting being in the year 40,000 AD the far sci fi future. Yet the Imperium is a slave to its own Religious Dogma with the God Emperor as the savior of mankind(Ironically Dogma that the Emperor himself would be vehemently against if he wasn't confined to the golden throne and mortally wounded). But that's my non-musician opinion! (Also there is a faction in the universe the Sisters of battle who are basically Space Nuns that will drop churches on your head and fire rockets from an Church Organ.)

Darktide is a co-op shooter hack and slash where a 4 person team takes on overwhelming odds to purge demonic corruption in a massive dystopian hive city. This song tends to play during a a demonic purge mission apex. It’s very fitting and inspires one to fight harder for the emperor and the imperium.

The darktide inuniverse is a tide of xenos(aliens) traitors and deamons that the impirium (the main faction) is holding back the tide of enemies that all want to see humanity destroyed.

The soundtrack is so good and fits well with gameplay. Just lifts the experience by a lot. 40k: Mechanicus also has an amazing soundtrack.

Darktide is one of those games who has had a rocky release but so far seems to only keeps getting better and better :D

Not only being a fun game but the ENTIRE soundtrack is amazing, don't think a single track misses. Really fitting to the setting of the game alongside just being kickass. Couldn't go wrong listening to any part of the OST. For the Emperor!!!

The music makes me think of a huge spaceship making planetfall, burning through the atmosphere and getting tossed by the winds, and ready to dump out hundreds and thousands of men.

Going as straight as possible on context. The empire of mankind strive thanks to it's faith in "the god emperor" (organe church music) and half human half machine engeneers wich believes in the "spirit of machines"(heavy techno music). This is the faction of the "good" guys. But the universe is pretty harsh and unforgiving to say the least. To me the drums remind me of STOMP. The heretics assemble and their boots and assorted melee weapons stomp and clang upon the hallways of the hive, with klaxons blaring as the agents of His Holy Majesty's Inquisition come to purge them.
