This level of skill you can't find anywhere else but training

Years ago, while still a sophomore in high school, an assistant director came to visit me in Washington State to hear me play. He bought me a mouthpiece for my trumpet and I was completely blown away when he said he was from the Boston Conservatoy! .....I made a huge mistake. I didn't know how to read music completely....I mean, I could read music a bit, but I needed to hear my part played first, then I could play it. During competitions, we would get to hear the music we were going to sight read and that...to me... made it pointless to be a sight reading test since I could now play my part by ear (I thought. I needed the music to know what notes to play, because I could read music. It was confidence I lacked). Now, I realize that I was wrong about everything. I convinced myself I didn't want to pursue this opportunity because "I didn't want to waste their time teaching me to read music" and "didn't want to play trumpet my whole life". I couldn't see all the other options that would've been open for me. So, to anyone who thinks they can't make it at this school.... I can't say "all of you can do it", but at the very least: TRY! .....that's all I needed to do but I didn't. Nobody could have convinced me to try back then anyway...I thought I had my life planned out. Now, I'm almost 40 and wow, what a school! I missed out 😶
