My 11 year old daughter wants to get into singing. Would you recommend this equipment for people starting out or go for something cheaper. My thinking is she should use quality gear from the start and it would last her a long time. Also I haven’t heard someone use “munted” for ages. Great video thanks

Re mike stand...when you get more money from gigs, you buy a new one, and use the crappy one for practice at home. As for the mics, I have an SM58, the Beta version, and a PG58 for other, e.g walk ups. As for the hygeine, you don't want the public not so experienced going through your mic. Even more so since the epidemic we have had. Besides the necessity for public liability insurance, I have a habit of telling people, re the stage, if you are not invited to the performance area, e.g sectioned off floor, or stage area, they are are probably not insured. After all if you are being paid for the gig, your stage area is a work area. If they hurt themselves while tripping over your equipment, well it is one thing a performer should check out. If they were invited up to sing or whatever the reason for being there, find out the liabilities there too. At a music workshop a friend and I ran for years, I sectioned off the floor area with painter's tape (easy to remove) to tell people "Keep out please unless invited". We had thousands of dollars worth of instruments, and sound equipment, all in, cables for us to trip over included..lol. It's for their safety as well as your's. All these little things add up to the care required before you have even started performing. Once you sort out the legalities, you are on the way. It's just a precaution every budding performer should know. Finally, I love a lady who knows her sound stuff. Well explained.

Hi Nicola, thank you so much for sharing such valuable information :) Nicola, I saw on your resources page that you listed Ableton live and I was wondering if you might one day want to do a video on that too? In my case in particular, I play the piano and sing and I am wanting to add some pre-recorded tracks, nothing too complex, textures, pads just to make the performance more dynamic. The vids on youtube usually involve recording live, it's more electronic stuff and I was looking for solutions with a more acoustic feel, more singer-songwrite-ish, hahaha, I love my vocabulary accuracy, I think you get me. Thank you so much anyway for the great content!!!

what equipment would you recommend for busking nowadays: pa speakers or amps? I am a trained vocalist but I want to start busking, I also play a bit electric guitar. I am tearing apart between JBL EON One Compact vs Cube EX. I was recommended Cub EX a lot but I heard it's not the best in terms of vocals yet I want to perform once in a while with an electric guitar.

Get something that is small, powerful, can be battery powered OR wired and sounds good to you. Don't have a current product recommendation though. I got a Street Cube and I hate it. It sounds crap.

Only if you want to for yourself. You can actually get heaps of free backing tracks on Spotify - just type in the song title and 'karaoke' at the end.

I currently use a karaoke while singing and playing guitar. But I also want to be able to record. Do I need a PA system or an audio interface? I'm not interested in singing or playing for people. I just like to do this has a hobby when I'm alone. And I'd like to record it.

Nicola, can you sing in restaurants, gigs, corporate with quality backing tracks ONLY ( i dont play an instrument) I do have a good voice. Ive heard I'd be confused with a karaoke singer. What is your advice?
@longsnapper5381
@longsnapper5381 9 месяцев назад
Hey, I'm not Nicola but have been performing for years. I've seen a couple acts in cafes etc where a singer is singing with backing tracks only.That is, indeed, karaoke. Now, if it's a gig where no one is even listening to you(why we don't play these venues) , who cares. Do it. If it is a legit event where people have come to see YOU, I would find a way to at least have SOME type of instrumentation. Strum a guitar, have a bass player, have a drummer sitting on a cajon......something.

I live in the USA. This video popped up in an unrelated search. Based on the title, I clicked. I was ready to move on till I saw you pick up the SM58 and express disatisfaction with the mic that has been the industry standard live mic through all my years of experience. You cited it's existance for over 40 years as a down side. It's been around that long because it works so effectively. The reasons it continues to be the most widely used live vocal mic on television and in live venues, especially outdoors, all around the world are: - It's frequency response curve sounds the best with most voices in most environments through most sound systems and with most styles of music and at high stage volumes. - It is rugged and can withstand abuse no condenser mic could ever endure. - Considering it's inclusion among the most widely carried live music gear for decades, it remains very reasonably priced. - Unlike a condenser mic, the SM58 can be used without the additional need of phantom power, a dedicated 31 band eq to "ring out" the room, or an expensive in ear monitor system. My curiosity was piqued by your comments, so I searched other posts and live performances. First, you are a far more accomplished and talented singer than I will ever be. Your production videos are sophisticated and captivating. I found no live footage of you singing live using a condenser. You were using a 58 in every live video I found. To me, only one had a less than perfect vocal tone. One sounded amazing. I chalk the lesser one up to the sound system, the room, the sound technician, or possibly the politics of live music. What I mean is, in my 26 years in a traveling band, more than once I muddled through a performance where the sound was set for the headliner and wasnt to be altered to accomodate the opener. I'm sorry I've gone on so long. You and I are from different worlds, but I believe we do have a few things in common. After leaving the clubs and the traveling behind and the comfort of an immensely gifted hired sound technician who made us sound better than we were, I performed and recorded in a Bluegrass Gospel group for 10 years where I learned to sing harmony and to use and LOVE a condenser mic. I own 3 large diaphram condensers (AT 4033a) and a Shure KSM137 condenser instrument mic. In bluegrass, after ringing out the room, the 5 of us performed through three 4033s playing from a distance of about 2 feet from our mics, moving in closer for harmony parts and instrumental solos. The sound was unbelievable but complicated to achieve. There was no monitoring due to mic sensativity. But I still sincerely believe that in the world of live amplified electric instrument performance, there is no equal to my beloved SM58. I hope your music and art bring you the lifetime of enjoyment I've been blessed with. My best to you!
