Hey guys don't forget to comment which explained video you want me to react to! Edit: Also now knowing what the song is actually about, I don't get why you guys were so shook by my theories, they were like 90% wrong lmao. You guys give me too much credit! the one by bulletproof vibes is good but also the one by italian army goes into a lot more details either one is good up to you tbh. just a warning have something happy set up for after you watch it (a happy reaction or just something you like to do that makes you happy whatever it may be) cause its very sad but necessary to know the meaning.

I second bangtan joonie on the italian army's video. the details and the match with the video is a lot closer. but if you just want to get a basic understanding, the bulletproof vibes one works. warning: the one by italian army is factual. which means that you will feel beyond angry about the truth.

I would suggest the one by bulletproof vibes. But it is the only one I have seen, so I don't know how good the other one is. It is kinda long though and looks like it has much info packed in. Bulletproof vibes made a short but concise video.

The boys actually weren't alowed to actually say what the song is about cause the then president was blacklisting artists who spoke out about the tragedy. So many artists and musicians were silenced and blacklisted for mentioning it. There are also many idols who got yellow ribbons (they represent the tragedy) tattooed in remembrance of all the lost lives.

i got goosebumps when you were throwing out theories because you dont understand how close you are in certain things you said about the imagery. they legally could not be direct in this song or music video it was dangerous at the time and still very touchy subject now. many koreans got the message clearly but bts were still protected by how vague it is.

Also highly recommend the live performance. They only performed the choreo a few times but it's so stunning. So much immagery reprisenting loss, being alone and even boats. It's a beautiful choreo and since the boys don't perform it so often (they often perform the song in a more relaxed manner, usually sitting down) I get so happy seeing other groups still covering it and doing the choreo for special stages. Also, Spring Day is known as The Queen, since with every release the boys do, it comes up on the charts alongside the newly released single/album

The song itself is written mostly by RM and Suga, they were partially inspired by their own stories of friendship and loss (especially Suga's verse, it's the same story as in his "Dear my friend" from D2 mixtape). However, the video(and the song too) is full of visuals to tie it to Sewol ferry tragedy (look up the explanation video by xCeleste) up until recently the boys didn't say anything about the meaning of it cause the situation was politically charged (you can look up wikipedia or a documentary about the incident on your own). What is remarkable, the tragedy took place in 2014 and bts, still a rookie group, visited the area and offered their support (and donations for the victims families)- that act could've easily cost them their careers because all the celebrities showing support were under the risk of total blacklisting. Our boys are the best🥺

The song is about losing your friend, to death or tragedy like the Sewol kids, but also other losses. Yoongi's verse is about his own friend who went to jail and he supported him, then had a fallout. The same friend he wrote about on Dear My Friend. An idol who was in a group with Jimin's friend and who was close with the boys did commit suicide but it was 10 months after this song came out, I don't know of anyone else.

It is about a tragedy that happened in Korea, where a ship sank and most of the people who died were high school students, they were abandoned and the media lied about it basically. I suggest you watch the explanation to this music video and you will understand much more, I don't want to say too much to not spoil, but definitely one of the most heartwarming songs I have heard from them due to the meaning behind these lyrics. Don't forget that in kpop there's a lot if dancing. If you were to see the dance with the song, the drums complement and make the dance very emotional the way they dance to it. You we're very close with your theories. The fact that you talked about submarines really hit. This song is about a Tragedy that happened in 2014 where a lot of kids ended up drowning in a ferry accident. I would watch Xcelests explanation video for more. The way I see it, the song is about missing someone. RM said that he and Suga wrote the song about missing people and loved ones. The music video however is filled with symbolism and references to the tragedy (subtle references because artists were getting blacklisted by the government back then for supporting the victims). The song and the music video together turns me into a sad mess lol. This explanation video "BTS Spring Day MV EXPLAINED | Sewol Ferry, Snow Piercer & Survivors" by bulletproof vibes is good and I think it's the one that is most watched. And it does give some good info. But personally, it was too short for me lol. But that's fine. Some people like more concise information. While I like to deep dive. I think the music video explanation video by Italian Army goes VERY deep into it. They explained things so well they were invited to South Korea to talk about it and BTS at a conference. Their video is called "What you STILL DON'T KNOW about BTS SPRING DAY MV" on youtube. Just be prepared to pause. The information goes by so fast. Another video I watched was the New Yorker's video called "What Went Wrong in the South Korean Ferry Disaster? | The New Yorker". It's a mini documentary. Very informative, but very sad to watch. It's very tragic. And all that despicable corruption. It's so sad, but I think it's good to be informed. It shows clips of what happened and so forth so I don't know if it might trigger some people. Extra video: "BTS Demo Version (2013-2020)" by naomjoonie. Starting at 56 seconds, Rm talks a bit about the lyrics and then there's a clip of the demo version of "Spring Day". I thought it'd be interesting to see what you thought of the demo version vs the final version :) Oh and about your references to the hanging shoes? I thought it was pretty common, even in the States, that hanging shoes on a telephone line was signifying that someone has died? I remember people telling me when I was young and I asked why were there shoes hanging on the telephone lines lol.
@ablindinglightthatnolonger8379
@ablindinglightthatnolonger8379 3 года назад
from what I've heard, in the US hanging shoes on the telephone wires means that they're selling drugs in that area, or they're signals left by gangs, actually. However, a lot of cultures do hang shoes on the trees to celebrate the lost loved ones.

I have to add my voice to those asking you to watch the explanation video. It will shift your perspective and make you see this song in a whole new way. The one every one has been recommending below is very good, but there is another one in Spanish (or Portuguese) with English subtitles that is even better. Either way you need to watch one of them to understand the historical and cultural references both in the song and video, because although this song was inspired by a tragedy and is about loss, the video is about politics.

The Italian army explanation also gives you more insight into the tragedy being discussed. You were sooooo close with a lot of your analysis which is pretty impressive since you said you went in the reaction not knowing anything or what the "tragedy" is about even. For the explanation videos there are 2 and both are pretty good. So without spoilers here is a bit of differences between them and you can pick which one you want to watch accordingly. 1. Spring Day MV Explained by Bulletbroof vibes: This one is highlighting the tragedy with some of the imagery being hypothetical analysis and others that would make a lot of sense. It's all text, no narration. 2. What You Still Don't Know About BTS Spring Day by Italian Army This one is a harder watch because it shows real life footage of the tragedy but it also puts a lot of things into perspective. Like the circumstances in which the video was released and how it could've affected BTS. All the info is based on facts. The only down side is that it's in italian and you have to read the subtitles of both the narration and the on screen captions/commentary. In my opinion, the 2nd on by Italian Army is a much better video to react to. The perfect scenario for me would be to react to both in this exact order but i know that's a lot to ask. So do you 😅

After that, she looked for another song, and find Just One Day. I immediately fall in love with this song, so beautiful. Finally we become ARMY until now. Spring Day is really deep song. No Spoilers: You did well with what you had. The relation between the song/mv and the tragedy that you were told about has been confirmed. However, the song also has other meanings, especially in relation to the connection between BTS and ARMY. This is why we've been getting especially weepy this past year when BTS performed Spring Day after not having done so in a long time. For this reason, I think it would be beneficial for you to at least view both of the below videos. It would be great if you reacted to both, but I know you may not have time. The first one is exclusively about the tragedy. 1) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tye1ONFeKis.html 2) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8SXb5O0TVhk.html Also, just for your own enjoyment, here is another version of Spring Day that you may enjoy. the MV relates to the tragedy, very subtly, because it was a very touchy subject at that time in korea. But the lyrics of the song are mostly written by Joon and Yoongi and it is basically about lost friendships, or missing a friend. Yoongi's verse is talking about the same person that he wrote 'Dear My Friend' for (from his mixtape D2), as someone who also lost two friends to drugs and bad life decisions sometimes it's even hard for me to listen to these two songs... Just shows how good they are I guess!

I love that you waited to give the song the emotional and mental attention it deserves. It's true that knowing what this is about makes it hit much harder, but it's still a beautiful emotional song even for first listeners. All your ideas are on point btw, I'm impressed. You could be a "bts universe theorist" :p There are a few references that you missed because it requires previous knowledge of those things and also a much more in-depth analysis than a "first reaction". If the explanation doesn't help with those, I'll gladly explain on future comments :)
@JohLindemann
@JohLindemann 3 года назад
Even without any explanation, the lyrics can be interpreted as a breakup or as the loss of a loved one. Breakups, one can get over or even get back together. When someone you love passes away, it's inevitable and the loss stays with you forever. That other meaning is what makes this song extra emotional, even without going into "the tragedy". They had to be VERY subtle with the lyrics and visuals, but they managed to create a song that will remain on the heart and soul (and charts) of the whole country forever.
@JohLindemann
@JohLindemann 3 года назад
The song is essencially about missing someone you love, and how it hurts deeply, but having the hope that the pain will eventually end. It's a comfort song, but deep and emotional. Hopeful but very sad. I spent the past winter in lockdown and sent this song to my best friend because "when the spring days are back we'll meet again" was too perfect for the situation.

About explained videos, keep in mind a lot in this mv was kept ambiguous for political reasons: the government was blacklisting artists thst showed support for the victims. haven't watched the whole thing yet so I don't know if it came up yet but I strongly recommend watching the explanation/theory video that explains how they connected both the ferry tragedy and the snowpiercer movie into this. It is quite emotional and capturing and explains A LOT that went over everyone's heads. I do recommend briefly looking up the Sewol Ferry Accident before watching the video though. Basically, in Korea, there was a bad ferry accident where many people died, a lot of them being highschoolers who lost their lives due to the mistakes of other people. Since it was a controversial topic, they "only" made the video about it while the song just partly picks up on it, mostly being about what I interpret as longing for a friend that you cannot see anymore (either for living far away or having died) as I personally just don't read romance specifically out of it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tye1ONFeKis.html

When we say tragedy...we mean tragedy. Like "hundreds of children drowning in the sea while their parents watched helplessly from the shore and the rescue boats intentionally ignored the situation and stopped people from trying to save the kids trapped in an air bubble in the ship for hours before they died because the government was trying to cover up a potential scandal" type of tragedy. The lyrics and the mv are somewhat separate in meaning because the government was blacklisting anyone who tried to speak up against what happened. The italian army video will get into it more but...yeah...it was horrible.

With outright criticism of the tragedy being blocked, BTS had to be really subtle on how they addressed it which is why most of the direct references are in the video rather than the lyrics, SPOILER: also I loved your comment on the reverb noise as being “under the water in a submarine” because the tragedy is a sinking ship. 😮

You did a great job picking up symbolisms and references in this. I liked the Inside Out one a lot :) As people already mentioned, this song is a bout a really sad and heartbreaking tragedy and the video and lyrics hint to that but at the same time are open enough so you can feel the emotion but still be able to relate in your own way and I think this is one of the magical aspects of this masterpiece. It hits you differently depending on your own experiences. There are a lot of things going on in the video and there are some great theory/ explanation videos out there about it that I strong recommend you to watch someday to get more into the story behind those details present in the MV. In overall, this song always makes me tear up but it also gives me some sort of relief, hope and fulfillment emotion that I cannot explain properly. It is precious and rightfully, the queen.

Thank you so much for your reaction. You gave me chills at one point with one of your hypotheses. You didn’t know how close you were. I adore this song and it always makes me cry. Your explanation of the production and instrumentation choices helped me to better understand why because although I know the stories surrounding the song I don’t understand Korean. I really enjoyed this. Thank you again. Fighting!

I think we should separate the meaning of the song and the meaning of the Mv. The MV is definitely about a tragedy where a lot of people lost their lives. It also do have connections to the movie Snowpiercer ( which was by the way quite amazing). The song itself can have different meanings. 1. Break up song: I understand why people think of it as a break up song, although I never thought about the song in that way. 2. Song about someone u miss. Every time I hear this song, I remember old friends that I haven't seen for a long time. People that used to be dear to me and that I lost track of. And some people might think of their lost ones. Borahae 💜 PS. In some cultures the shoes hanging of from a tree, pole or a cable represents people that died.

This was my first BTS comeback and this and the whole You Never Walk Alone album holds a lot of nostalgia for me. But yea, in the grand scheme of the BTCU while it sounds romantic, it’s not.

A lot of ppl will recommend this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tye1ONFeKis.html). It's tried and true but this one by an Italian ARMY (with subs) really goes into the depth of the tragedy (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FrT4a_Fw6pE.html). The only thing with the second one is that there is A LOT of info. It's well-researched and super interesting, though. Definitely gives more space to the details of the tragedy rather than just making it an emotional kick-off to focus on BTS.

I think there are some videos that break down the meaning of the song, and by tragedy it means something horrible happened.
