90% wrong? The hell? First of all you figured out that it was about death and parting when most people dismiss it as a breakup song You recognized that it was not actually a train sound but a ship one and that there was a sonar sound as well You figured out the fact that it was representing children. The Sewol ferry tragedy had claimed the lives of almost all students on the ferry. I will NOT tolerate slander towards you even if it comes from you ╰(‵□′)╯

IKR!!! me too!! I don't get it when he said that he was 90% wrong, like TF?? When I watched his previous reaction video on the song, I was amazed at how far and accurate he could guess the references! Of course, we, as international people have a little background about that tragedy or any painful realities behind that, and that is why we missed it. It is acceptable!! Anyhow, I am EXTREMELY enjoying your reaction, AMERE!! Why? because I am slow in interpreting the explained video (it is sooo fast and a lot information to digest), and your statements (some of them were shouted while you were "choked" and about to cry .... :-)... ) have been helping me to digest the long explanation in the video... And YES, I was crying again watching the explained video here.

There is an article released recently saying that after donating they personally met some of the families with bang pd risking their career and state funding they might get blacklisted doing that and its called “government level cultural blacklist” I copied some of whats inside the article: “In 2017, BTS released “Spring Day”, a song fans believe was written about the Sewol ferry disaster. “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing,” Jin said in a recent interview with Esquire, when asked if the song is about a sad event. Although ARMYs are familiar with “Spring Day’s” rumored connection to the Sewol, many might not know that BTS and Bang Si Hyuk, the founder of Big Hit Entertainment, met with family members of the victims back in 2014. Hankyoreh reporter Kim Kyung Wook reveals how BTS’s name unexpectedly came up when he interviewed bereaved families last April. Approximately 200 days after the Sewol sank, BTS and Bang Si Hyuk paid their respects in person. They burned incense, comforted the families, and were polite throughout the visit. They also donated 100 million won (approximately $85,000) to the Sewol Ferry Disaster 416 Family Council. The Hankyoreh‘s report also mentions a “government-level cultural blacklist”. The blacklist, which was not made public until April 2018, is a 60-page document that lists over 9,000 artists who were excluded from state funding for criticizing former president Park Geun Hye‘s response to the Sewol‘s sinking. After the blacklist went public, a fact-finding committee under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism found that 116 artists on the list had their artworks censored or excluded from state assistance programs for artists.” “Ever since BTS met the families, they have “earnestly prayed and cheered for [BTS’s] future” (their prayers must be one of the reasons why spring day is on charts until now and also those prayers contributes to where bts success is now)

I think the other explanation video explains the snow piercer reference better than this one, but this one explains the Sewol ferry tragedy better, and catches detail that the other one doesn’t. But if you want a more succinct explanation of the snow piercer symbolism and also a slightly more in-depth explanation about the book The Ones Who WalkAway From Omelas, I recommend watching the other explanation video as well. But basically the snow piercer train is a metaphor for people that are trapped inside a corrupt society. No one can leave because it’s too cold outside. But if the spring day comes and the earth warms up then the people can escape the corrupt society that they live in and start a new life.

When we were talking about you getting things right, it was the fact that you pointed out the music sound like a submarine going under water. It was a submarine but you were very close. You also picked out that it was about death, and not only death but death of a kid, or in this case kids. You also pick out the fact that it was two different things going on, anger and sadness. They were angry at the government and sad about the death of the kids.

And now you understand why Army calls Spring Day the "Queen", and that will never change. It is still to this day on the charts and every time BTS releases a new song, Spring Day rises in the charts, which is an amazing feat and goes to show how truly impactful it is. Also, their are a few videos on youTube taken by students who were on the ferry and they are very chilling to watch I watched every second of your reaction as how could I not.

The tragedy of the Sewol Ferry was of negligence all around. The ferry was overloaded and because it was overloaded it could not secure the cargo. And yes the ferry's owners were given special permissions in getting liscences. After the ferry capsized the Coast Guard did not have the right equipment. Their scuba equipent was as old as the left overs of the Korean war. The fishing boats went and the Coast Guard pushed the back because they believed they would be sucked in and if the citizens went to help the kids then the Coast Guard would look bad. The crew told the kids to stay in their cabin then went and stood out side so they were easy to pull off the ship. Snowpiecer as a whole is about how the government uses the poor to support itself and feels that it can do so because their (high society aka the government) place is above those that are poor and they let on to the train out of their benevelonce. Omela's is about how society uses this child to run Omela's and so in the same way and again society uses the poor the under represented (the young) in any way they fashion because the feel they can. So in the same way in the Sewol Disaster the kids were told to stay in their rooms and not move as ballast and the crew didn't see them as anything else. They did not think they would be found out if the kids died and I think that is why they let the crew leave and the kids were left behind. But the last is my opinion alone. By the way those kids lived for hours probably the water did not immediately consume those kids there were pockets of air for a long while, long enough for most of these kids to record not only what was happening to them but messages to their parents. No the cover up did not work. The coast guard was heavily critized for not having the equipment needed, the president was impeached for using the funds that should of gone to the coast guard to her lavish life.

28:44 You're right - there was A LOT more corruption and (for lack of a better word), wrongdoing on the part of the Park government leading up to & following the Sewol tragedy. The three big things I'll mention are: 1. South Korea was a military dictatorship until 1979 when the general who had appointed himself president was assassinated. Without going into detail, suffice to say that there are ongoing tensions between right-wing supporters of authoritarian rule and pro-democracy forces. S. Korea has been either forcibly occupied, at war or under a dictatorship since at least 1910. The fact that they have achieved a functioning democracy in the face of such resistance is just short of miraculous. 2. President Park Geun Hye's administration maintained a blacklist of writers, journalists, filmmakers, musicians and other public figures who were perceived as having been at all critical of her government. Given that South Korea is a relatively conservative country with a strong culture of social cohesion, the government blacklist meant that not only did hundreds of people lose their careers & livelihoods, but thousands more were afraid to speak out. Bong Joon-Ho, who directed Snowpiercer, is the same guy who wrote & directed Parasite. He's known for making class-conscious critiques of South Korean society and he was on President Park's blacklist. BTS risked being blacklisted more than once with their music. 3. Y'know that military dictator I wrote about in #1 above? Well, the thing is, that was President Park Geun-Hye's father.

"Hopefully you don't cry". Me, already bawling: "aw man too late for that". For someone who knows nothing about the sewol ferry, you got a lot of details on the MV. Let us give you credit, dammit. Something I'm not sure if you got right (because the video has an overload of information), and makes everything more awful: it was the ferry crew who told the students to stand by and wait, while they saved themselves.
@JohLindemann
@JohLindemann 3 года назад
Snowpiercer and Omelas both reference to the fact that in order to "live a happy life" people are supposed to forget all about the miserable children. Which is what the government expected the families of victims to do, "forget and move on". The Omelas book is a very short story, i highly recommend you to read it, not only for references, but also because it's an interesting story imo and there's more to it than just "there is a miserable kid".
@JohLindemann
@JohLindemann 3 года назад
I'm surprised BTS didn't get banned/blacklisted at some point of their careers, because they have a couple songs that are very "fck the system" and "fck the government". This is a soft ballad in support of the victims, the other songs are much more like "this is wrong, fck it and fck you for agreeing with it" (like baepsae, for example, but even more lyrically aggressive)
@JohLindemann
@JohLindemann 3 года назад
BTW! After many years BTS finally confirmed that "the song is about a tragedy", but they added that it's not the only meaning. Yes, it's about sewol, but it's also for everyone in need of comfort, for everyone missing people in any circumstance, an universal warm hug of hope.

To make things easier to understand. 2014 South Korean political mentality was very conservative and believed in small government. That means that government shouldn’t have or impose rules or regulations on big companies and overall living. President Park Geun-hye’s cabinet killed a bill in the Blue House that would essentially regulate safety transportation. So when these kids went out on their trip, the sinking of MV Sewol happened. If the government would have passed the regulations needed, then this wouldn’t have happened. Overall, the direct cause was overloading and improper secured cargo. It was too much for such a small vessel and it sank. What happened afterwards caused the outraged. Captain and Crew jumped ship and told the students to stay behind. Improper coastal rescue (and they staged it rescue for the media) as for President Park Guen-hye and her cabinet (well they didn’t react or send out proper help). Presiden Park Guen-hye also stopped media reporting and charged anyone who openly talked against her and her cabinet. Eventually she got impeached and her entire cabinet was charged.

idk if anyone has answered it yet, but about 2:47, the album You Never Walk Alone is a repackage album of Wings, meaning that there are only 3 new songs in the album, Spring Day, Not Today and the outro - A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone the album cover is basically a direct reflection of these 3 songs, since the other songs make up the Wings album so it's safe to guess that those yellow ribbons refers to Spring Day and the subject matter of oppression itself (Not Today was also about fighting oppression), and the album itself focuses on this matter

Spring Day, as other BTS' tracks, has many different layers and nuances of interpretation. While the members always express their ideas about the songs (either on Vlive and interviews) when they come out with new projects, they always encourage their fans to make up their own theories and symbolism, especially to use them to get through the struggles in their lives. For instance, as said by RM, when he and Suga gave their contribution to this song they were thinking about sudden memories of friends they are not in contact with anymore (if I'm remembering correctly). Also, many opinions came from armies: from passed away friends, to suicide, to a break-up, to all the different stages of a person going through depression, to the hardships you end up facing during life as you grow up. However, it's almost commonly accepted that the meaning behind the music video, combined with the song itself, is related to the Sewol tragedy. Every time I end up watching this explanation video, or the music video, or listening to the song (even though, stylistically it's not even my favourite), I always get chills. In this documentary (we can call it that) especially, at the scene of the protest, with that big crowd roaring for their pain, anger, disappointment and shoving the lights up to the sky, I get the strongest goosebumps rising up all over my body, even to my face.

The captain is in jail and South Korea's president was impeached and imprisoned (for the handling of this incident and other corrupt things that happened during her term - she even lounged in bed until the afternoon on the day of the sinking despite her approval being needed and no rescue was to start until she got there with her camera crews to set up publicity shots with the story they wanted to present). They have video and audio footage of the captain telling people to stay in their rooms (the audio message played on a loop for hours after the captain left) and there is a video of crew members drinking beer, laughing and smoking after the ferry started sinking, and video of the captain hopping on the rescue boat (the only one that ever came while the ship was sinking and the students could have been saved). Only the children who defied authority and ignored the commands to stay put managed to survive this horrific tragedy. The accident was caused by bribery and corruption so the government didn't want it exposed and they would have had to have civilian help for the rescue - but didn't want them realising the ship was overloaded, so they held everyone back, even the commercial fishermen and divers who showed up. The parents were receiving texts and videos from the trapped children for hours before they died. Those explanation videos are extremely hard to watch. I break down completely. In short almost the entirety of the population took to the streets, the president was impeached and she and many others ended up in prison, but not before they ruined the careers of anyone, especially artists or journalists that spoke up about it. 10000 artists on an official blacklist. BTS donated $100,000 in a year when they only earned $300000. They never publicisied it either - one of the family members of the victims was so sick of seeing the hatred directed at BTS that they went public about how the members came and paid personal respects to the parents and donated literally a third of their money to the fight for justice for these children who died so needlessly.

another song thats somewhat connected to this is their song Am i Wrong. the lyrics and choreography call out specific government people and those people were already looking at bts like "this group is going to be a problem" many korean armys said during this time they were very nervous for bts and their careers because there was rumors about the blacklist going around before spring day even released. theres a article that explains it better than i can. but please when you get a chance react to Am i Wrong lyrics and comeback stage. normally for comeback songs theyll perform the songs on music shows multiple times and said music shows are broadcast on tv (another reason why bts wasnt popular until they got big overseas cause the music shows werent broadcasting them for the general public to see but thats for other reasons not related to the topic were on) anyways if you search for On or black swan or previous comeback songs you'll see many performances from korean music shows. am i wrong only has a few im not sure if its cause they were censored but thats one of their songs they didnt perform a lot. heres links about this song. muish.wordpress.com/2016/10/23/bts-am-i-wrong-english-translation-and-ramblings/ doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/2018/06/20/am-i-wrong/ www.billboard.com/amp/articles/columns/k-town/8098832/bts-lyrics-social-commentary-political

This was the first time I watched this version of the explained video so that was super interesting to watch. The people who recommended this video to you were right. This video was more informative about the tragedy itself, but I think that the other explanation video (I think its this one) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tye1ONFeKis.html is more informative about the breakdown of the music video and the lyrics themselves. I would highly recommend watching the other explained video on your own time. The reason why a lot of people were telling you that you were on the right track was that you picked up a lot of symbolism that we didn't even think about. The snare, the waiting until death to meet you again vibes, the children vibes with the cake, the loss of a friend with the shoes. You got a lot right. It's almost impossible to see the connection to the Sewol Ferry Tragedy unless you already knew about it. But the fact that you got that much on your own without even knowing about the tragedy is kinda crazy. As I'm sure many people have told you already, BTS risked being blacklisted by releasing this MV and their mini-album. That didn't deter them though. BTS is known for giving voice to the taboo topics of society. To criticize society and to give voice to the oppressed and silenced. Especially to the younger generation. How could they be silent about a tragedy that took the lives of so many children? When they themselves are named to be the bulletproof vests that protect adolescents? That's why there is so much symbolism in the MV. They couldn't outright say that they were talking about the tragedy. Even when questioned during that time, they said that any connection of their work to the Sewol Ferry accident was purely coincidental. They donated a lot of money to the families anonymously and it was also leaked that they visited the families in person as well to give them support. After their actions, the families and friends of those lost became real supporters of BTS. They saw the boys for who they were: genuine, kind, caring and giving. They all saw the boys as people who deserved to become big. Because the boys still gave back even when they weren't. Spring Day means so much to the families and friends who lost people in that tragedy. It's like an anthem. It means so much to people that the song never leaves the charts in Korea. It's why we call Spring Day Queen. The Queen that never leaves the charts. Love your reactions! Don't worry about crying on camera. We're all a supportive bunch and this was super emotional. 💜

There is another that you should look into. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uT9m08FxYVg.html It's a short video so might want to look at it on your own time. There was supposed to be another trial after the 5 year anniversary which hopefully has already taken place. There is a student who is a survivor who has been fighting for the right of the students who lost their lives. She has even changed her life path from wanting to be a kindergarten teacher to an emergency service rescuer. The fact that the captain got off the boat makes me sick to my stomach. Spring Day is one of my favorites songs and it's still on the charts.

I am so glad that you watched this video, even if you had done it on your own time. And that's not just because you appreciate the song and video more, but because so few people around the world know that this actually happened, and how ruthlessly these children and other passengers were left helpless. But also to see how much they are still loved and remembered. I know you don't usually do cover reactions, but I think you would enjoy Song So Hee's cover of Spring Day on the show Immortal Songs 2. It was a tribute episode for Big Hit producer Pdogg. She is a singer of traditional Korean music, and her interpretation shows how much this song means to their country even now. I always enjoy your channel, and I appreciate your effort to take in the meaning of the song and video. It is emotionally difficult, but it shows how much you care. 💜

If you were to consider reacting to the one by Bulletproof Vibes I would watch every bit of that too. It's not as long. There are similarities but also a few differences. Even though the video by Italian Army is AMAZING and so on point, there are just a few of the interpretation where I "prefer" the one by Bulletproof Vibes - in my mind those few points are more in line with the snowpiercer and other references. Hope you'll consider it. Have a great weekend!

Sewol is still extremely politicized in Korea today. Every political party has an opinion about it. While BTS wouldn't necessarily be blacklisted nowadays (moreover, they are considered relatively close to the current president), anything they would say abt it would be politicized. So though they recently (2020) implied in an interview that Spring Day is abt the Sewol tragedy, I think it makes sense why they wouldn't necessarily speak out abt it today. In my opinion, the song best represents mourning and the sentiment of not forgetting. They even played it for the 2020 graduation performance and sb pointed out that the kids who died in the tragedy would be graduating last year *ugly tears*

I'd give you more likes if I could!! This song is something else, and your reaction was quite similar to mine. I also didn't know about the hidden meaning, and when I happened to search for it, I was blown away. Goosebumps throughout the video. And for the record, I completely agree with you. I'm happy to be living in this day and age too. Ignoring stuff like this only gives more power to those who already have it. That's why I love that people like BTS are out there exposing all of it (and of course, i'm grateful of channels like this which pick everything apart for the rest of us). We should fight against injustice in whatever way possible. Spring Day is something else, and once people get to see the real meaning behind it, it can't be unseen. Great reaction!! And btw, you weren't that far off! You picked up on the death theme, only it was on a much bigger scale.

I think it holds a record for being on Korea’s digital charts for the longest which indicates to me that it really struck a chord at home. I agree that the references in the mv are brilliant. Thank you for watching this video and understanding the deeper meaning of Spring Day. As most pointed out all the things you got right, there is something else i didn't see many talk about. The fact that RM & Suga's verses were about a break up. They explicitly stated that they both wrote their verses about their own experience of losing (separating from) friends, for Suga it's the same friend he talks about in his song Dear My Friend from his mixtape D-2. To add some details about the Sewol Ferry, as far as I understand, is that the national TV was reporting that all those on board were rescued, while the victim's families were screaming for the coast guard and the government to save their kids. As you said, most footage was recorded on cellphones and the little number of independent news portals that managed to record or interview people. The company benefitting from the reconstruction of the ferry and covering up all the corruption was related to the former president and/or her connections. This was not the only thing she was indicated of but lots of other cases of extortion and personal gain corruption. This tragedy was the tipping point that contributed to the protests and her eventual impeachment. Only after, did the details of the Sewol Ferry tragedy get uncovered on how & why it sank and noone in decision-making positions did anything to prevent it. All of Korea know the truth and understand what truly happened. So, at least these young kids didn't die in vain. I hope even more justice is brought to light and all who had part would be punished.

It's interesting that you raise the question of whether it's better to know about the tragedy (25:59), because that's also the main theme of The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas - in the story the citizens of Omelas only find out about the child that is suffering for their happiness once they reach a certain age and after finding that out can either continue to live in a "happy" Omelas or leave with their conscience clean... EDIT: Or, clean-ish, since they leave and do nothing to help the child.

I'm probably talking to myself since this video isn't new, and you probably learned more about it since but i just wanted to emphasize something : I think you missed at the very beginning of the video the fact that most of the victims were actually children (250 out of the 304 dead), students on a school trip. I think with that in mind, most of the connections are much more straightfoward, both Omelas and Snowpiercer being about the elites thriving on the suffering of children specifically. The tragedy is horrible in itself, but the fact that the "sacrified" were children makes it so much worse. It is probably also one of the reasons BTS involved themselves that much and chose to speak out (in a roundabout way to avoid blacklisting). They have always been vocal about how the youth is treated in Korea, it was their whole concept for their name and their first albums. Anyways, just wanted to point that out. And on the offchance you're seeing this: i found your page a few days ago, i love your reactions, you're hilarious but i also love how you analyse the music and really pay attention to everything. Please stay safe, keep doing you, i'm subscribing :) (Also, since i can't ever shut up, you should watch this other explanation vid (not necessarily on camera), it details a lot less about the tragedy but goes deeper into the Snowpiercer imagery of the MV and is a nice complement to the video you watched : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tye1ONFeKis.html )

Of course, the fallout of this tragedy didn't go well for the people in power, the president was impeached, criminal cases were filled for him and the rest of the politicians and people in-charge. Another thing you have to understand (in terms of the parts you said didn't make sense), is that the culture of South Korea, similar to a lot of East Asian countries, it is scary to speak up and not follow orders from any people in a higher position than you as it is ingrained through the years that you should blindly follow them, even if you think it doesn't make sense or if they're wrong. It's getting better and improving as more open-minded individuals and influential people like BTS leading by example that they can deviate and criticize the authorities that do wrong. In the end, this song is not just a movement but a way for the group and their company to deliver their support, empathy, and comfort for the people who lost loved ones.
