MUSIC REACTION: Showing Heather "One Winged Angel" (3 Versions) 

This is such an iconic song, so iconic that it went off as my phone's ringtone in a college class and everyone even the teacher literally...ducked and started to look around like oh snap we bout to be owned. It was one of my most cherished moments in college because even long after that moment everyone was still talking about it and laughing our butts off. It became our class' shared secret and if you were in the know you were in...if not to bad. Ahh good times.

I like the ending of the new version because the part where it sounds triumphant is actually the main battle music for the heroes, the choir is for the fates, and then it goes back to Sephiroth with a mix of the battle theme again. It’s basically saying despite it being a remake, they are fated to fight him.

Find it funny how they refer to the original as "cheesy" When it's like, T H E boss battle theme. So many classic villain themes afterwards took inspiration from it, of course it's going to sound kinda tropey. 'Cause y'know, it MADE the tropes in the first place

Just a tip: Square Enix has their own music channel on youtube and you can find official audio directly from the CD soundtracks of the games in there that were uploaded on playlists, it often happens that when fans put things together it might be inaccurate and different from what the composers and arrangers were thinking or they might have uploaded it in like 17 years ago and youtube compressed the audio to their max quality of that time, so if you do anything from Square, search their channel because the quallity there is the real deal directly from their original files they have in their company archives.

I do not know how true this is, but I believe Advent: One-Winged Angel is what the original what was supposed to resemble, but they couldn't do it at the time.

11:40 Just to avoid future misconception, Uematsu never worked on Kingdom Hearts, that would be Yoko Shimomura. Another legendary composer who started off composing at Capcom (her most well known work being Street Fighter 2) and later worked for Square before going freelance. She's worked on a few projects other than Kingdom Hearts, such as Final Fantasy XV, Parasite Eve, Xenoblade Chronicles, Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi series and a great amount of arrangements/remixes for Smash Bros. Note that there are One Winged Angel arrangements in Kingdom Hearts though, for the Sephiroth battles in 1 and 2, along with some other small remixes or little melodies in reference to Final Fantasy.

I completely disagree with the take that FF7s original Sephiroth theme is the "lesser" version. It is more brutalistic, but I prefer that about the score. Not just from a nostalgic standpoint, but from my near decade as a trumpet player in an marching band and orchestra. Maybe my choive of instrument is what attributes this feeling, but it is simply my take on it.

Literally no other song can make me feel so much. It had a huge impact foming my interests and who i am now. I never found a game/film who can push FFVII from the top of my list. Gosh im so exhausted everytime i listen to the film OSTs. I feel happy, sad, excited of doom, im Crying, breaking down in awe because i cant get how this can be so good. I've got borderline so emotions feel much more intense for me. and even if i feel exhausted after listen to this, i feel fullfilled and happy. This is like a little drug for me.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but the rock/metal instruments in the Advent Children/Smash Ultimate version of OWA is courtesy of Uematsu's band, the Black Mages, who have a discography of three albums dedicated to rock covers of pieces Uematsu made for FF (like Maybe I'm a Lion from VIII and Otherworld from X).

I'm surprised how you forgot to mention that the "Superhero moment" in the remake arrangement is a direct reference to Those Who Fight.

One correction i feel should be made, the Kingdom Hearts music was done by a woman named Yoko Shimomura. However, One Winged Angel does also appear in a couple of those games lol.

FF as a whole has always had banger soundtracks and memorable scores. But ever since ff7, I don't think any OST has gone as hard as one wing angel did. Imo, ff15(havnt played 16 but hear it has stellar music) was the first one since ff7 to go way harder than needed in its musical comps

I would love to see her reaction to Dancing Mad from FF6, both these tracks defined my childhood growing up.

OWA song 2 was also the version used in the Sephiroth fight in Advent Children.

Funny enough that "victory" part during the 4th phase of the ribirth version is actually the whispers theme. If you play the game you'd understand why their theme is mixed in with Sephiroth's song. Nobody seems to pick up on that though unfortunately.

Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's just because it was my first exposure to the song, but the Advent Children is still my favorite version

I actually prefer the original over the other versions. I do like ACTUAL orchestral version of this, and not the rock version of it as well.

The difference between kids who grew up with midi music vs those who didnt. The English localization of advent children is definitely cheesy but id say it was the same back then. Japanese version was much better

Feel like Heather would benefit greatly from you better framing the context of each piece, so you also pause less and talk over less and risk them missing a key part. In the beginning you could first be talking about the instrumentation being used like for the Remake and original versions being varying degrees of each other, one orchestral and one MIDI. Good call on keeping Advent Children a surprise though.

I'll be honest, I kinda hate the electric guitar version. Maybe because I first heard this song as a kid, on the PS1, and the feelings it evoked... Idk. I feel like all the guitar riffs and electric twang really take away from the impact of the song for me. I do like the updated orchestral version though. For me this song should always be midi or orchestral, get that garage band crap outta there lol

Hot take: ALL the music from Final Fantasy 8 is better than One Winged Angel... 😅🤭 Of course, I say that as a MASSIVE fan of the 8th game, it's still my favorite. It was the first Final Fantasy, I ever played, if you don't count Mystic Quest or Adventure (really a Secret Of Mana game). If you feel the need to bash my head in, please don't tell me that! 🫠
