Cher was the first to use autotune as a deliberate vocal effect rather than pitch correction, which is what they were doing. After all, can't get that 90s feel without that "Cher effect" 😁🎶
I've heard that it's a vocoder rather than autotune. I'm not an engineer, but autotune didn't come on the scene until the early 2000's? Awesome sound in any case.
@@fowlerdp06 I had heard that too, but then someone posted a link to an article about how the effect was actually done by Cher and her producer, and how she was the first artist to pioneer it. Sorry I can't find it offhand, but it was very interesting 🙂
Cher's "Believe" single definitely utilized Auto-Tune, not vocoder technology. Here's producer Mark Taylor explaining the process he used: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ScxV4iozqnQ.html
i remember the vocoder story that was being pushed at the time - then come to find out it was actually autotune because the powers that be didnt want fully put out the technology yet to protect a trade secret. you would think that autotune was a lot older than it was at that the time but it shows it was in 97 that it came out and then cher used it on Believe in 98
I never read anything by the trio’s h.s. teacher, but after they won TSO, Avi’s high school choral director/teacher posted at the forum on Choralnet.org (I don’t think it’s available anymore, though). He was with the PTX support group in the audience at the live finale when they won, wearing one of the yellow t-shirts. In the post, he talked about how he completely rewrote the curriculum after Avi walked in the first day of his freshman year, with his newly reconfigured vocal chords (his voice dropped the summer before). He recognized immediately the sheer talent he had in Avi and did everything he could to nurture it. One year, he brought in Trist Curless, now the bass singer for the Manhattan Transfer, to conduct a day-long workshop for all of his singers, and he made sure that Trist had a one-on-one session with Avi to teach him how to effectively use a microphone, something bass singers apparently have to work on. The teacher was also the one who encouraged Avi to go to Mt. SAC for college because their music program is that good.
Honestly it hurts me to say this, but a good chunk of music teachers aren't the greatest. Don't get me wrong theses some amazing teachers out there. But there's also teachers that will force you to change from a alto sax (with 6 years of playing experience), to the flute, because his favorite student wanted the sax. I legit refused to play a note, still somehow passed. You can't swap my instrument 70% of the way through the year
The rumours are flying thick & fast that PTX is doing exactly that, I don’t know how much of it is true & how much is wishful thinking by the Pentaholic squad but I have everything crossed that we get that album 🥰😁
Great screw acappella. At least they are not pretending anymore. Dead artists, songs written for piano and now the dreaded autotune. Like them if you want but acappella it ain't anymore.
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 pretending? you clearly do not know anything about them. They regularly perform live off-mic. Most acapella groups that have a lot of songs, do have songs with instruments and effects. And what dead artists? Hate them, if you want, but at least do not make up false reasons.
Pentatonix was going to do Cher's Believe on the Sing Off, but changed their song that week because they were having problems with the arrangement. They did Video Killed the Radio Star instead. I think they kept it in mind until they could really do it right.
IIRC one of the other reasons they did that was because one of the bands they made friends with was gonna do that song if they made it to that week but had been removed from the competition so they did it as a tribute to their friends.
@@bestusernameever6518 Yeah Believe woulda been great but I loved their version of Video Killed the Radio Star and I even performed it in my school talent show 1 year
@@samwood917 It's a good song, and I find it highly ironic with how computers and pod casts have somewhat looped us back around to "radio stars" in their own way..even though the original song was about how people of the time were somewhat wary of 20th century media tech. There's also the fact that the line "Put the blame on VCR" was originally "Put the blame on VTR" which stands for "Video Tape Recorder"..I have a bad habit of listening for differences in original lyrics vs covers and seeing what was changed.
Anyone else thinking how you got so old that we’re sitting here listening to 90s music feeling so nostalgic in the same way that our parents did when we were young when they listened to 60s music? I never understood, I was like “okay dad lol”. This is really like listening to 60s music when you’re born in the 90s
It must be. I was raising a family and building a business in the 90's... no dancing was happening for me in that decade. Wish I COULD feel nostalgic for this medley, because PTX is obviously killing it, as they do. I'll take your dad's 60's tunes any day! ;-)
Because Mitch was *born* to sing Cher, honestly. And yes, to echo another commenter, the Enya song that was popular in the 90s was “Orinoco Flow,” also known as “Sail Away.” There’s a very VERY similar effect in their original “Be My Eyes.”

Fun fact: Cher's "Believe" (The one with The Cher Effect of intentionally distinct auto-tune) was the song they were going to sing for "Guilty Pleasures Week" on The Sing-Off. They were having arrangement trouble with it and changed to "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles two days before the performance... And it was AWESOME!
This is my favorite thing that PTX has done. Everything about this is perfect. The looks, harmonies, bell tones, Kevin's beatboxing, everything about Matt😍, the nostalgia, even the use of auto-tune/vocoder. Perfect from start to finish. I loved your reaction. So much fun watching you bop along with the groove!
Pentatonix used auto tune for an effect on Believe to honor Cher who was the first to use it as an effect when she did the song. They put salutes and subtle honors like this in several of their covers. In Bohemian Rhapsody near the end where they show a star field and Mitch goes back into his electric guitar, that’s a salute to Brian May who in addition to being an awesome guitarist also has a PhD in Astrophysics. The black and white with gold accents setting in their Shallow cover is a salute to the movie posters advertising the movie A Star is Born in which the song was used.
They did auto tune in homage to Cher and the ‘Cher effect’. Great reaction. Their arrangement and transitions are impeccable! I would love to see you react to ‘Rise’ by Superfruit, and ‘Creep’ AGT performance by Brian Justin Crum (and he is featured in Rise)
Hi Janelle! Get funky! Flash back to the 90s. I've been listening to pentatonix for years, even made my kid and fam watch their Christmas specials. Seen bassist guy leave and come back. Amazing group all around. And for you that are crying about the auto tune for a Cher sound byte, shush. An a capella group can have fun with music. Yall just mad yall can't sing. Peace and love!
Hell, yes! Believe was a phenomenon in its own right and I'd annoy my mom to tears singing that song all day long (I didn't know then, but I'm a contralto, and I was super excited to find a 'girl' song that was comfortable for me to sing). Believe sounds in true form with the autotune, just like Bohemian Rhapsody's panning to the left and right of the stereo in the beginning. I love PTX for including those small details that pay homage to the original, even when they are reluctant to add effects they can't perform live.
I was a little worried when I first heard this, because I thought people would unknowingly just hear the autotuning and go "Ooh! Ooh! Look! Pentatonix can't really sing, listen to that autotuning!" without realizing it's on purpose to mimic what Cher did in her song (being from the 90s and before a lot of younger folk's time). Thankfully I've been wrong so far and haven't seen any comments on any videos on it. It's still autotuning, to answer your question, but it's tweaked to such an extent that it actually makes an effect instead of subtly trying to fix someone's singing.
👋🏻 Hi Janelle Yes Ace of Base “Cher” effect is auto tune They are absolutely mind blowing - only PTX gives us this big of smiles during 2020/2021! I had MAJOR school dance flashbacks during this 😆🇨🇦🥰
Hi Janelle 💜 So the sound is auto tune and like you said a perfect rendition to Cher she would be proud you made my day seeing you reacting to this one thank you great reaction as always ☺️
@@mazcolyer1972 I’m doing great, thanks for asking. I love that that song made DJ think of me. Made my day and also love having people say hi to me. Hope you are doing well also!
This has become my feel good song. It is so hard to sit still. Also I was shocked, impressed, and love that they could even try C+C music factory. So much talent in these 5 people.
Hi, Janelle! How are you? DJ love your reactions!!! I'm so glad you did pentatonix again. It really is wonderful that it is almost a guarentee with them you won't be let down even if PENTATONIX are singing the phone book.
Once you hear it, you can't unhear it......I'm blue, if I was green I would die, if I was green I would die! I've been hearing it like that since 2003 when a coworker sang it like that
I always love your reactions plus I learn so much by listening to your expertise, as you break these performances down. Your joy at listening to these musical savants, reflects my love for these kids. I'm 73 and I've followed this group from day one on the Sing Off and my reactions, while not as educated as yours, are none theless very similar at the enjoyment level. All I can say is for you to keep on keeping on, my young friend! Let us continue down this wonderful rabbit hole!!
I realize you mostly take recommendations from Patreon, but if you want to hear Mitch blow you away with high notes, try the cover of Gold or Aha Shanghai Star Vista. Also in Aha, you get to hear Avi blow the speaker (it's live).
That was an actual use of auto-tune dedicated to Cher because she was the first artist to use it (on Believe) as an artistic effect rather than a corrective effect. As you said, everyone back then called it "The Cher Effect"! They really knocked this one out of the park! Great production and my favorite medley of theirs since Daft Punk!
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 Sorry, but I'm calling BS on that. A cappella simply means no musical instruments. And even old blues a cappella groups back in the early 20th century occasionally used harmonicas or other small hand-held instruments (Jew's harps for example) on their songs...nobody ever accused them of no longer being a cappella. And as for post-production effects, Pentatonix has been using studio effects of some kind dating all the way back to their very first album, just as every current a cappella group does post-production on their studio recordings.
@@larrywt656 seriously? Well then screw everything and bring in all the fake synthetic stuff you want. You had a choice- to deal with truth and admit they had abandoned the form and you still like them so the acapella doesn't matter to you but you choose lying and attacking people who state the truth and THAT is very sick. You just like Pentatonix and have decided to defend them no matter what they do. That's the bullshit and lack of integrity.
If you want to hear one of the best covers of “Creep”, listen to Brian Justin Crum’s official video (in black and white) of the full length version of this song. A truly touching rendition. His vocal abilities and breathe control are amazing. It gets me teary every time I listen to him sing and he makes me really feel the song (notice the tear drop running down his face at the end of the video). I look forward to seeing your reaction and I am a fan of your reaction videos (especially PTX … I love Mitch as well). Hello Janelle. 🙂
Hey Janelle--I never saw the movie, but it was based on one of the best SNL skits of all time! Chris Kattan, Will Ferrell, and Jim Carey all grooving to such a great song--perfection!
OMG! I've gotten on here every day to see if you had reacted to this! I'm so glad because I knew how excited you'd be to hear them. And yes, they are better than the originals. There is a side by side video of this with the original artists, and you can't tell the difference! Your comment about your life being complete with the Blue (Da Ba Dee) song is the same way I felt about it. I am a huge electronic/EDM fan and have been from way back when! I was so excited about Night at the Roxbury as well. Hi Janelle! I was XX years old in the 90's but my boys were teenagers then, so I knew every single song they sang! Thanks again for the reaction and the nostalgia!
New sub. You had me at fairies, ninjas, and dragons! Plus..."Emiliooooo, the mighty duck man..." Hi Janelle! Great reaction! Love PTX! Can't wait to check out more!
I think it was a missed opportunity that PTX didn't do the Butabi head bob, in unison, for even a couple seconds during that song. But hey, it's a great medley!
I love your reactions the best to this group!!!!! I am listening to reactions while doing paperwprk and came across a couple of yours and now just going through every single one you have done including ones ive heard you do before! Love you and PTX. You appreciate music. I played a recorder in 4th grade and did childrens choir but wouldn't sing solos but really really love music.
Great reaction. Thank you. They out did themselves on this medley. As a music teacher, I think that you would love their performance in their video for "Come Along". Please react to it.
The Cher effect from what I learned from other reaction videos is from auto tuning. Also, if you like these mash up Melodies, DJ, I got to pitch my forever pitch of “the Wizard of Ahhs” from Todrick Hall featuring pentatonix, made back in the day with Avi. It will put a smile on your face for days!
In the ‘90s I was listening to country and line dancing at the Borderline in Thousand Oaks, yeah that one. Anyway, besides Cher I’d heard only a couple of these songs. Now this medley is all one song to me. As are all the medleys and evolutions.
What's up Janelle and Janelle's husband, I love that movie too! I automatically do the head bop when this song comes on. As an adult living through the nineties these are such nostalgic songs, love it... lol! 😊
And every time they allow him to sing a half stanza as a lead singer, his voice is GORGEOUS, and has a clarion, trumpet -like tone that is impeccable! Wish more people would acknowledge his talent and the excellence he gives the entire group with the bass line!
Great reaction!!! I'm a pentaholic too, but who isn't these days?! The're awsome!!! I know you love VoicePlay, so I recommend My mother told me, the last one they did. Joeff crushed it!!! So, so good! 👌🔝
#1 - Listen to the wife,, "J". hahahah she knew #MitchFace ... {smart woman} ... yeah, you got that joke man. hahaha #2 - You are totally the pause king ... BUT .. we're here to see *you* react, we've all seen the videos. And you sir, react very well ... and I love your breakdown of the skills {you remind me of my choir teacher, in a good way} ... -I'll be watching your channel, as will many others I suspect, and PLEASE for the love of God, do more PTX video's. !!! 🤩🙏🤘😎🖖👍👌🤣😄 -Good Times! -Steven
Thanks for this choice !! Great reaction ! Mitch really shines here ! His high notes, and lower for BLUE. Love PTX ! They all look fabulous, and the memories it brought me are fabulous !
Ninja's ...dragons?? wt?? lol NAR..lol windows!!!! Kevin's beat boxing is INSANE!!!! It hurts my head to realize we are now closer to 2050 than 1990🤯. Matt's bass...dude!! Hey loved that! You're calling them right!! It is called Cher effect..back then it was a Vocorder
I so look forward to your PTX reactions! Your ear for the things I don't hear is amazing! I love all that you point out and appreciate about PTX! Thank you!
The 'Cher effect' name you may be searching for is a vocoder. There's an article where the London-based music producers detail how they worked it all out, not only that effect but the entire song, complete with the gear used and the process by which they arrived at all the unique sounds in this song: www.soundonsound.com/techniques/recording-cher-believe
A Night at the Roxbury is a one of the few moviews I have rented regularly for the past couple of decades. Bonus: It has my favorite B-list actor, Lochlyn Munroe! (The personal trainer guy.)
Loving your Pentatonix reactions! You should check out Superfruit too, Mitch and Scott’s efforts as a duo. Their cover of The Promise by When In Rome is stunning and Rise by Katy Perry with a few other guests is incredibly powerful!!
I'm really enjoying all these reactions from a music teacher's point of view (as opposed to a singer or solo vocal coach) because you can so easily break down why I love them so much - things I couldn't put into words before! It takes me back to my choir days and I love it!
Yes I even listened to plenty other REACTORS from the PENTATONIX. Just incredible to listen to. I knew PLENTY songs & just adored them all. Thanks for putting it on! xx
The effect is auto tune. Thanks for finally doing this one. Next you need to check out Voiceplays new one called My Mother Told Me. Love all your reactions.😁
I really want to hear a full PTX treatment of Cher's "Believe". It'll be awesome!!! ..the Cher effect is auto tune applied to a vocal to modify the sound. It's not needed except for the sonic effect.
My music era is 60s, 70s, early 80s, so I only know three of these songs. I wasn’t really into this even though I love PTX. Thank you for your review which has helped me hear the greatness of their singing and arrangement.
A lot of people say that the Cher Effect is auto tune, or an effect OF auto tune. It's actually not. It's something called a "vocoder", it's digital encoding for voice effect. Basically, it's used to turn speech into a set of digitally reproducible sounds. When it's cleaned up it sounds much the same as some of the audio book readings that are done via computer. It was used in the way it was to give the song a unique sound, which it did.
Like number 773 Hey there 🤗 Wow!! I am seeing this for the first time with you and I was having the same reactions!! Lol 🎙🤣 I too grew up watching Night at the Roxbury 🚘🕺🕺 LOVE IT I also enjoyed the BLUE moment 💙 And Cher!!! 🎤🎶 a million times YES!! my new favorite Pentatonix mix 🥰 See ya later👋🗻
It's Autotune, They used it on "Believe" by Cher & on "Blue" by Eiffel 65, since it was used on the Original songs!!!! Also if you lookup "The Musician" RU-vid channel and look up "90s Dance Medley - Pentatonix Side by Side" it will play PTX video and music on the Left side while the Original 90s Video and Music is played on the Right side!!!! They sound Exactly the same to Me!!!! Great Reaction as Usual!!!! I Love the way You Breakdown and Explain all of the Musical Terms!!!! Much Love From Rome, Georgia!!!!
