Music Theory - How To Use Major and Minor add 9 Chords and Lines
In this episode I discuss the structure and usage of both major and minor add9 chords for improvising and composition. A major add9 chord consists of the 1 2 3 5 notes of a major scale and a minor add9 chord is the 1 2 b3 5 of a minor (Aeolian) scale.
C major add9 = C D E G also called Cadd9
C minor add9 = C D Eb G

The second chord brought chills up my spine... Nick Drake used that to great effect at least once.... Your voicing was very close to what he played... what a beautiful chord...

Beautiful. Very clever. Complex sound but simple structure. It's also very easily transposable because II - V - I in any key is easy, major and minor add 9 chords are simple and positioning these chords over the relevant intervals from the bass note is simple. You can very easily think inversions and spread chords this way too. Once again thank you Rick.

Hello Rick! There have been a major discussion with my peers regarding the chord C-D-E-G...I'm strongly confident to tell them it's a Cadd9...while the others argue that it's actually a Cadd2 because the 9th should be past the octave and the two chords sound different. What is the best explanation to finally end the "war"? ...I'm a huge fan of your works btw, I know you will always have the answers!!! Thank you for everything you do! Cheers! Jake from the Philippines :-)

Rick Beato, first I'd like to thank you for posting all of these wonderfully fun, informative and organized vidoes. There are very few cats who have such a working and fluid knowledge in the world of Jazz improvisation, Modern classical ( and Film music) and also such a developed aesthetic for Pop/ Rock production. So much of what I cover with my students in regards to Jazz improv you have dedicated videos that are so clear and methodic. Really, Great work with immense value. I'd love to delve into the world of Keith Jarrett/ Chick/ and Coltrane ( 1963 and up) and maybe deduct a few tricks in their sleeve rather than going through an entire solo. I have some ideas in case you're interested. In any case, a sincere thanks and please keep'em coming. Peace

@yoavyenon

I transcribed Coltrane's Crescent Solo ( off of Crescent 1964) and a bunch of other ones ( not entire solos but choruses and Ideas that my ears gravitated towards) from this 63-66 era. So many things I can think of... for example the use of upper structure triads, mixing the Altered Dominant with the whole-tone as He often does over dominant 7th chords, Chromaticism... Maybe some stuff out of A Love Supreme ( which has a lot of altered pentatonic ideas). I'm thinking maybe mail or Skype would be a more suitable platform. For many years I've wanted to learn what (one of my teachers) George Garzone is playing over Summertime off of his Moodialogy album with Kenny Werner... i'd love to learn this stuff very much. This is a mystery even to the wise.. ha . In any case I'd love to expand on this.

This one is a "KILLER" !! So when u play a II V I progression. Let's says you play the 2nd degree as A 5dim 7 add11 which is the same as a IV degree/II : C minor add9/A. then go to the V degree as a dominant chord Rick says you can play at the same time Eb minor add9/ C (which is the C minor add9/A moved up to a minor 3rd) seen from the D dominant this chords will be seen as D Alt + Eb (b9) - F (#9/3 minor) - F# (3 M) - Bb (# 5/ 6 or 13) With major replace the Eb ...... with Abadd 9 (Major 3rd)

Wasn’t it easier to just say the 9th is the 9th note? C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D? Thus Cadd9 is the I,III,V- C,E,G plus D? Unless I am wrong 🤔

Does anyone know the difference between an add9 and a sus2?
@MarvelTile
@MarvelTile 5 лет назад
Well, an add9 you would ADD a note at the core chord (1-3-5 Major 1-b3-5 minor -> 1-3-5-9 and 1-b3-5-9). As with a sus2 you would LOWER the 3rd of the core chord to a 2nd (1-3-5 Major 1-b3-5 minor -> 1-2-5 for both cases). So you can tell that a sus chord will transform the triad to another triad (3 notes chord), more open and ambiguous as you lose the 3rd. The add9 chord will enrich the already existing core triad with one more note of the scale, making it richer.
@souviksen7497
@souviksen7497 5 лет назад
On a sus2 you are replacing the 3rd with a second. In an add 9 you're just adding the 2 and not replacing the 3rd.
@BeatlesTranscriber
@BeatlesTranscriber 2 года назад
Also a good example of Cadd9 is the intro piano chord to George Harrison’s “ Wonderwall to be Here”

@dannytetreault
@dannytetreault 3 года назад
@@MuzixMaker Okay so a sus2 chord has a root, a fifth and a suspended two (no third). A XmajAdd9 (where X=some root note) has a root, third, perfect fifth and a FOURTH NOTE the 9th which gives it a suspended two feel. Correct? Dan T -Nanaimo, BC Vancouver Island.

@@dannytetreault That's how I understand it, the 9th adding color and tension.
@willemsgrahpics
@willemsgrahpics 2 года назад
@@dannytetreault almost, that’s not quite right either, Add 2 (or add 9 whichever way you want to look at it) would have the following intervals: Root, Maj 2nd, Maj 3rd, 5th It’s just a major triad with a major 2nd added - no major 7th, hence the word add. In your example you’ve added a 4th, in which case you can call it major add 4 (again or add 11 depends on how you look at it) To clarify for everyone else: SUS essentially replaces the 3rd with the 4th or 2nd - sus2 or sus4 Hope this helps and let’s all thank Rick for his contributions that inspire us all
