Making music videos does take a lot of money, effort and time. I personally like them because they’re a form of self expression.

Yeah making music also often takes a lot of money, effort and time. But we all do it for free for years before making any money from it. If you make music videos because you love making them, 100% keep doing them if you can pull it off.

As someone who has spent a lot of money on his music videos, I can confirm that it doesn't make sense from a marketing point of view. You can quickly spend a few thousand euros here and end up not reaching anywhere near as many people as you would like. The money can be spent much more sensibly elsewhere. However, I really enjoy doing it because it gives me the opportunity to give my instrumental songs a story. I also grew up with MTV and that's why music videos are somehow part of it for me. 😅

Yeah, totally agree. If you enjoy doing it, do it. But ideally do it affordably so you still have a marketing budget. Spending $3k on a video and then only having $1k to market your song and video makes no sense. Better to spend $1k on the video and then $3k on marketing to gain more fans.

These days, creating a professional music video is way more accessible, and it gives the audience a visual experience that complements the lyrics and the overall feel of the song. More powerful experience and cheaper than ADs in my experience 👍

Some would say there is an intangible reason for doing a music video, the argument being it can "legitimize" an artist in people's eyes. But overall I completely agree with you on this one.

Creativity doesn't have to cost the earth but unless you are established, I don't see the point of wasting your budget on a music video. The music video example I always liked was Low by Foo Fighters wih Dave, Jack and just a video camera. Simple but classic.

I agree with this mostly but I think it’s worth defining what you mean by “music video”. What I think people usually mean is a bunch of shots in different locations with a narrative element, props, extra etc. Those definitely don’t seem worthwhile but I think long form full-song horizontal videos can still be important for artists for building deeper connections with your audience. For example Alanis Morrissette’s video for Ironic. She’s basically just lip syncing the song by herself in a car. I’ve been focused almost exclusively on short form content for audience building but I recently did a fan survey of my email list and the number one thing people asked for is full song official music videos. And I noticed in my own habits that while I’m more likely to “find” an artist through vertical video, all the bands I actually became a fan of recently i found through full song videos on RU-vid. Yeah, don’t spend too much money on highly produced story focused music videos, but I get creative and find ways to make full song horizontal videos diy style for fans to dig into and then just crop and cut for some social media video

Thank you Andrew (dude, our names are so similar we may be related!) My most recent music video was just a lyric video and I used footage from a live show with a mix of video and images, and several clips my wife took during the setup and all. That’s gotten over 1k views (posted a few months ago). And to your point, my guitar lesson and gear videos get way more views than that. So another strategy I’m trying to pointing folks to that video from my main videos (ex: you could give a lesson on the song and point to the video in that video). I realize that’s not going to grant ad-like results but it’s an inexpensive way to get folks over to that music video (and as you said, spend $ on the actual ads to your music - great point you made on keeping the focus on one thing…I’ve always struggled with that!)

I think what you said in this video makes a lot of sense. I get caught up with the artistic part of it and think it’s a means of gaining followers and people to buy your music. Then again people can steal your song through an MP3 converter. So it’s hard to know what to do, down the track I’d be interested in getting you to help me promote my music. How could we start that?

There is rarely a time when I choose the “official video” over a lyric video when I’m searching for music. But a lot of times when I’m writing I have an idea for a music video for the song. I’m from the mtv generation and I’m still stuck on stupid.

Great vid as usual Andrew, and I agree with the principle of what you’re saying. That being said, if anyone does wanna film a full music video you can absolutely do it on a modern iPhone and you’ll get incredible quality. You defo don’t need to spend a lot (if anything at all) - and great video editing software like DaVinci Resolve is also free

Im gonna be honest, I got a bit of a youtube following and in almost all cases lyric videos fullfil the same role as a music video but there are some cases where its worth it It pays to have a clear goal for what you're hoping for with a video. Are you posting it for streamers to react to? Are you hoping a label will sign you? Do you have or want a youtube following?

Investing money and time in one of my own music videos got me a paid job making videos for someone else. I don’t think making good art is ever a waste of time and I don’t think music videos should be viewed as a marketing asset. They give another view as to who the performer is and can build the world of the music. If you see it as just a marketing method yes it’s not a good use of that money. But I think they can be a lot more than that

Creating a professional video doesn’t necessarily mean it will get more views than a simple video. Music videos where the artist(s) perform live or do playback generally perform much better, and these can even be filmed with a mobile phone. Videos without live performances typically do far worse. Yes, making videos is smart, but you don't need to invest a lot. It can also depend on the genre.

The pro video looks amazing! But I think if a new band were asking, i'd tell them to stick with the DIY route until they had enough of an audience to justify going the fancy route. I've seen so many people make amazing videos like yours, and have it get less than 1,000 views because they blew their entire budget on the video.

If your not signed to a label or have not much of a following and are not part of something bigger then you, then don't bother trying to pay for a Dua Lipa, style music video its a waste of money and time. Dua Lipa only gets views on a music video because her record label pays about 20k to 50k to even 250k to get played on all the mainstream TV channels and Radio shows. With technology and software its pretty easy to make a great loking video for like you said 1k to 2k or less, infact there are money singer song writers on RU-vid performing htere songs in there home Studio and getting 100k or more views.

I see the music videos as an extension of the the art of making music. It’s a visualisation of the images in my brain when I write the track. What a surprise. Anything fulfilling and creatively rewarding is a waste of time. Don't try to stand out musically or visually as people nowadays probably won't care. Stick to the cliches of your sub genre or niche and carry on feeding bite size snickers type content to the algorithm with cheap lip sync videos and the like..

From a marketing or business perspective as a new / small artist, music videos are often a waste of time. That money could be put to much better use elsewhere. But if you can make a great video for cheap or free, and enjoy making videos, it's great. I just hate to see artists dropping $5k on music videos and having less than 1,000 people ever watch it because they have no money left over to market it.
@UB.S
@UB.S Месяц назад
But what percentage of artists can spend $2K on marketing, plus recording, mixing, a cover art, etc.? I don't understand the ROI: spend $3K+ on a song that will make $20 in a year? (Luckily, because most people make cents out of each song). Not to mention that you're supposed to release like a song a month, so spend more on making music a month that what you actually make at your job... or either making music is for rich kids, or I'm the only broke musician, which I doubt, or the math doesn't make any sense at all. Or maybe I don't understand a thing and some nice guy will explain it to me right now.
@dennisvh
@dennisvh Месяц назад
@UB.S If you want to make money as a musician, what they aim for is the exponential growth. It's a marathon not a sprint. So you spend relatively more in the beginning to get the growth in motion. Look it like this: release a song and it will gain people listening to it, release a second and a percentage of the first song will listen to your second. And it will also again draw new people to you listeners base. The third song gets listeners from the first two songs plus new ones etc. This leads to an exponential growth. I believe it's around 500k listeners per month you can live from it in most countries at minimal wage. Just from streams. Then there's merch and performances etc.

I am a Suno prompter and so far I have created two music videos (Life, Vitamin song). I posted them in an AI music related Facebook group and they have reached 150-200 views so far. Since they are AI generated music videos, they were cheap to create. I am satisfied with their performances so far but I know it would be much more difficult to promote them to a wider audience. I did RU-vid music video promotions in previous years and the results were not convincing at all. One of my videos ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xBElv1pdkOY.html
