In today's video, I talk about the decline in music videos in recent years. I go over examples of artists' music videos struggling to compare to their catalog from a few years ago ranging from Drake, Adele, and Post Malone.
Timestamps:
1:35 Pt. I - Times have changed.
3:40 Pt. II - Short-form is now king.
5:50 Pt. III - How the mighty have fallen
8:36 Pt. IV - Don't let the flame die out.
11:12 Outro
Nice to see you guys again! Thanks for watching! I’m finally trying to set aside more of my time to make these videos and continue to improve my video-making process. I’m starting to enjoy this hobby more than anything else. So I’m hoping I can get to a place where I’m releasing these more consistently. Let me know if you have any concepts for videos you’d like me to give my thoughts on!

It has not blown up because it is negligent in its thesis. The real reason the videos used as examples have smaller numbers it the song themselves are bad. Adele, Drake, etc…are putting out mid music..so the results are mid. Kids, today think they can cheat the system and ‘algorithm’ themselves to success. TALENT reigns, and always will. If someone makes a great song..the numbers will always correlate.

Im a music video director / producer. Although im from Spain and I dont even come close to working with A-list artists like you mentioned, I do know a thing or two about music video production. I dont think theyre dead, I just believe people have stopped watching the videos ONLY on youtube. Short form content has really scattered the attention from the artists official youtube channel, and making short promos for tik tok and instagram reels has really become as important as the music video itself. You can have a 600k music video on youtube but get like 19 million views on tik tok if someone decided to kickstart a trend. I dont really think the views from tik tok equate to youtube, since most people just watch the video for like 5 seconds and keep scrolling, but even if 1/3 of people bother to pay attention its still a good majority, enough to make sales on merch / venues, thus make a large profit, as much as you would if you made a succesfull music video like back in 2016, even more, if were being fair. Most people dont wanna admit it, but if youre into trap music, most of your listeners are 15, and kids nowadays dont really watch that much long form content, they watch popular trends on tik tok, and thats really about it. Like you mentioned, videos are not worse than before, its just that attention is just scattered on short form content. In production, we even prioritize what the short form promotional video would be OVER the actual music video, because of the amount of sales we can make if we plug merch and stuff.

Ok so I'll start writing my comment at 3:00, as an artist I figured out that music video cuts should carry out something different audio and video wise and that's what I'm currently trying to do. An example of what I'm saying that pops in my mind is the difference between Caleborate - 4 William video on youtube and the song on spotify with the added vocal solo at the end. I sometimes prefer listening to the youtube cut and when I'm in the mood I like the audio one. Ok onto 4:20, yes you are right. Shorts/TikToks really took over because of the reasons you mentioned. But when you look at an artist like Ren who's music videos carry out a really super artistic visuals (Money Game Pt 3 / Hi Ren / The Tale of Jenny, Screech & Violet), you'll notice that if the video quality and directing is designed to keep the attention of the viewer (Any Mr Beast video will give you a clear demonstration of what I'm saying), a music video will really pull up your stats as an artist. I just think that the bar for music video is now higher than ever and you gotta meet the standard if you wanna join the game yk... 5:40 it is true that artists like Conor has gained traction through tiktoks, but when I scroll through platforms like spotify, I notice artists that I've never heard of in my life gaining 400K + monthly listeners with no marketing effort, so it really up to the music in first place. Look at how NF blew up, I have not yet seen NF posting anything promotional and he still pulls numbers like Kendric and Cole (Maybe a little less). 8:00 the dip in numbers isn't due to the fall off of music videos but rather because there's a lot of suppliers in comparison to what the consumers are likely to check. Take for example the premise of 100K song released a day, majority of these songs are in the English language because the consumer base of English are most likely to consume through platforms like spotify which benefits artists financially. There are 4 Billion users on the internet and where I come from (Syira) and the middle east in general, isn't yet on spotify and even if they were there's no content directed to them, our artists (the ones who speak our language; Arabic) are still uploading to youtube which doesn't really help you to keep you career going as an artist. Now take what I've said and apply it to Japan, African countries, eastern European countries and so on and so forth.. shortly put, too much music for too little audience (574 million users on spotify atm) so the consumer gets lost when he finds out that there are 50 artists releasing the songs that he likes and end up consuming from the one that appealed the most through short form content and that has the most relevancy. 9:00 I agree dear Sir. 10:10 you get it!! unlike my fellow artists. 11:00 been fearing this moment ever since I started making music 3 and a half years ago, I should really practice performing outside of my kitchen, haha. Good video keep it up, it'll blow, so will your channel
@onqueueisgood
@onqueueisgood 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the comment I’m happy to start a discussion! I like a lot of your points it’s very true that music videos have to be more unique and provide an extra layer to what the original audio portrays. I think NF somewhat brands himself through his music videos because he has a very clear aesthetic and he mainly focuses on his music videos to build his imaging. I also completely agree about the large mass of songs being released on a daily basis. The adoption of streaming and more songs being accessible makes it hard to keep up with fewer acts cause there is so much more to discover. I appreciate it and I hope your music thrives!

Agree with a lot of the points you are making, I think it's also overall a matter of attention real estate. Because sound is such a fundamental part of tik tok short form video and ig reels, people are getting their cup filled when it comes to music-with-a-video-accompaniment on those platforms, and they don't feel the need to get the longform (music videos) version as much anymore

1:02 I’ve attached a bunch of songs to dbz amv’s. Sometimes it can be random rap music, other times the AMV’s actually make sense, like this one dbz AMV of Centuries from Fallout Boy, that featured numerous clips of Goku’s bloodline (from Bardock, Goku to teen Gohan) fighting against foes. So now I can’t listen to songs like that without attaching it to Gohan fighting Bojack.

I think the competition in music has become so saturated by all types of music videos or videos related to music competing with each other or with other videos on the internet that even though the audience online grows, it gets more spread out. Back in the day, for example the music video of Despacito would rank in so many views because it was a song you would hear everywhere while nowadays a lot of the top songs fall off quickly as well. You are less likely to come across songs you hear constantly especially with people listening to less and less radio
@onqueueisgood
@onqueueisgood 4 месяца назад
Very true songs that are going to be shoved down peoples throats primarily come from TikTok now rather than the radio. It's tough to market a longer visual when people are introduced to just a climatic snippet of a song.
@iss2075
@iss2075 3 месяца назад
For me it was the adverts. In 2016 you would get 1 advert every 10 songs. But a few years later you get 2 adverts at the beginning and end of each video. It's just unbearable. I don't use TikTok, but I don't use RU-vid for music either. Another thing which destroyed music on RU-vid is they changed their algorithm. It used to be fantastic in the mid-10's. You could just choose a random song and leave it on autoplay and you would hear new similar songs, future hit songs, older songs you forgot, etc, and you would like almost all of them. Then one day the algorithm changed and now it seems to just get the 10 most recent songs you listened to and puts them on loop. Again, it's unbearable, and not fun.

1. Most MVs especially Western MVs have extremely dark and/or degenerate imagery that people don't want to see. The world is dark af and society is burning literally no one wants to see this evil ass imagery or hear these insane lyrics. 2. More people are finally realizing that basically every celebrity is trash and go out of their way, whether consciously or not, to SEPARATE the song from the artists face, not rush to put the 2 together. 3. Song quality as well as length has dramatically dropped. Half the time you barely mess with the song if at all never mind caring about the visual for it.

I think that one of the last songs which truly blew up on RU-vid was "Dance Monkey" and the reason for that is because it was a huge global hit and on a global level people still prefer listening to music on RU-vid than on streaming services, which are so predominant in the US. So it really depends whether a song is only marketed in the US or also across the globe. This is also the reason why Latin music has always made enormous numbers on RU-vid and is still doing.

Thank you for making this! I have been a "numbers person" my whole life and a "view counts" person since 2011, and this has been bothering me for at least two years. In 2015 and 2016, I was in 12th grade about to enter college when that wave of extremely popular music videos happened. Adele's "Hello" got 27.7 million views in its first 24 hours, and even two months later, it was STILL averaging over 12 million/day. Looking at that page in the Wayback Machine, I see that this video had 803 million views by 02:00, 25 December 2015. That's 803 million views in 63 days. Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space", both from 2014, both have well over 3 billion views to date. Justin Bieber has three videos from 2015 (his "Purpose" era) that exceed one billion views ("Love Yourself" with 1.7B, "What Do You Mean" with 2.2B, and "Sorry" with 3.7B). When those same artists make music videos now, they get nowhere near those numbers. For Justin Bieber, let's look at his 2020 and 2021 videos: neither "Lonely" nor "Anyone" have reached 200 million, and "Ghost", while it did much better, still has only 348 million. Of the videos released in 2023, Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" was one of the FEW videos (maybe even the only video) that has reached 700 million. Thank you for providing your insight as to why music videos are being viewed much less than they were before. Like I said, I had been wondering about this strange phenomenon for at least the last two years. For another perspective that confirms this, Wikipedia maintains a page titled "List of most-viewed RU-vid videos", which shows the top 30 most viewed videos. As of March 2024, no video on that list is newer than June 25, 2018, which was over 5 1/2 years ago! I am starting to feel like "Baby Shark" will ALWAYS be the most viewed video. I can imagine living to the year 2300, being over 300 years old, and STILL seeing "Baby Shark" at the #1 spot on that list with TRILLIONS (maybe even quadrillions) of views with no other video coming close to it in views. Some videos have promising starts. For example, two years ago around this time, on March 31, 2022, at 7:00 pm EDT, Harry Styles released the video for "As It Was." Within four days (96 hours), it had 35 million views. Sadly, the video didn't maintain its initial rate. Its current view count (701 million) is very respectable, but if you do the math, had it continued growing at 8.8 million views/day like it did when it was new, it would have reached its current view count by mid-June 2022. Today, it would have had over 6.2 billion views. "Baby Shark" currently has nearly 70% more views than the next "closest" video, "Despacito" (14.2 B vs. 8.4B).

Thank you so much for this comment! Some people have questioned my examples because of how long ago some videos came out, but you explained it exactly. They at least had hundreds of millions within months of it releasing. I’m glad you enjoyed the video I can relate to being a numbers and views kid since late middle school early high school.

Also though with the advent tik tok, the music landscape is SO saturated with thousands of songs being uploaded and shared everyday by independent artists. so overall, the attention is spread across so many different artists and sounds as well, there is less of a "1% dominance" of super famous artists that everyone talks about

We call "short-form" videos time-efficient but I just can't agree with that. They're biscuits, snacks, you name it. It's probably a personal thing but I have yet to see a short (non-meme) video being able to display a 1/10th of the nuance of a longer video. They don't feed your brain like a bowl of rice would, they just feed on it by being addicting. If artists stop making full-length MVs because TikTok is so much more profitable, they're just becoming corpo: obsessed for the return on investment, not the art of it. Also, comment for the algorithm. Keep it up.

haven't finished the video yet (so forgive me if you address this) but while this is very true for the western music landscape, it is very much the opposite for other markets like the korean world. kpop music videos are only getting better and better, a lot of them with cool storylines and/or symbolism that adds to the artistic value of the song... or it's just really really cool and high effort which is also cool lol. i recommend trying to check out stray kids for those crazy cool videos (specifically their title tracks like 's-class' and 'god's menu') or newjeans (specifically 'cool with you' and 'ditto') if you wanna see what i'm talking about! anywhos, very nice video mate. honestly just missing that tiny little bit of polish but overall insanely cool. keep it up!
@onqueueisgood

I have actually come across newjeans before and have definitely noticed how the K-pop market endulges in music videos more. You’re absolutely right. I could’ve touched on that for sure but I guess I had a narrow head pointing towards just the western mainstream. Thank you for the feedback!

Ive notice that too. Remenber the crazinest of the fandom braging about "a view record in the first 24hs" such a cringe. Now i think most of them are fake view. And paid promotion. Ive been no the cinema and they play music videos from Ariana Grande,TS,BTS and many more.

Loved the video and the editing was elite. Yes music videos have become somewhat obsolete over time unfortunately. Sometimes I rewatch music videos from the early to mid 2010's and they were just so much more expressive and vibrant. I feel like many videos are either really weird CGI, green screen or just so boring. Also what voice editing program do you use? I'm trying to find a good one for my videos.

I still and always will enjoy watching the music videos. It gives me something to look at while I enjoy the song. As a musician myself, I know that these artist and video editors put so much time in the making some of these music videos. So I feel like I should give them credit and at least watch their video, and see their interpretation of how they think the video should be. Then I can listen to the song later without the music video, and either imagine the music video in my head, or imagine my own music video or amv in my head.

Back when I was 17 and I was making my first songs, I showed one instrumental to a friend who was a cinema fan (he eventually studied film). He told me that the track made him imagine a surreal Kurosawa samurai movie in his head and that was something completely different to how I imagined and titled the song. I went back and retitled it and did all the promo and imagery based on the ideas my friend gave me and those Japanese influences even inspired me to add more world music elements to my album.
