Disclaimer (s): The music & music videos I'm referring to will almost all be Western, and even more specifically American, so that's the frame of reference I'm speaking from.)
Music videos have revolutionized the way we experience our favorite songs. Music videos, and television in general, have added a visual element to music. This has allowed artists to transition from just singers to entertainers, meaning the way they presented themselves on stage and in their videos was now just as a large a part of their artistry. Of course, music videos wouldn't be as popular as they are without MTV or the VMAs, which provided iconic pop culture moments for fans. Artists of all genres had made use of music videos to market their music including Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Madonna, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. The Internet pushed a lot of music video viewership online, which has allowed artists like PSY, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, and Nicki Minaj to go viral. Music videos aren't just popular for pop artists, but have been a staple for rock, hip-hop, and R&B artists too. Artists like TLC, Aaliyah, Kanye West, Destiny's Child, and Mariah Carey regularly accompanied their songs with high budget videos. In this video, we'll take a look at how music videos have evolved over past decades, and how they've become what they are today.

Everybody say Thank you to Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson is the reason why artists started to take music videos seriously with the dance routine, storylines, productions and visuals. And you should have included the most essential history between MJ and MTV. After 2 years of its launch, MTV lost its relevency, the majority of the audience lost their interest and the network was about to shut down. But when they were pushed to play MJ's billie jeans and beat it, the network regain its life and after the release of the Thriller music video MTV got into a different dimension of success and MTV became the MTV. Then VMA was born. MTV never gave proper credit to MJ which is disappointing.

I still remember the night in 1983 that my parents put my siblings and me to bed early because Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video was premiering and they wanted to watch it in peace without three little kids being terrified by the zombies. From then on, all of his subsequent video premiers were treated as huge events. You cleared your calendar and you simply did NOT miss one of his premiers. “The Way You Make Me Feel” is my favorite video of his to this very day. Once we entered the mid 2000s we kinda lost the art in music videos, and when Gaga came onto the scene she revolutionized and reshaped what it meant to make a music video and make it an art form. not a lot of people give her that credit because to them all they see is “weird” but she’s a literal genius and is the last remaining true Pop Icon.

(Side note: Kim end up blocking me and making her video private to paid members only bc she didn’t like the fact that her subscribers agreed with my point more and said Kim was wrong in her points lmaooo) but with Taylor there has been a cult like fandom to her visuals and I agree her golden era of music videos was definitely 1989, I still hate that folklore and evermore were released around the pandemic bc I only imagine if Taylor made a whole movie based on those two albums alone

Some of my favorite music videos are Rock The Boat by Aaliyah (May she Rest In Peace), Bad Romance by Lady Gaga (Love the outfits, choreography, everything), Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson (And her whole Rhythm Nation music video film in general, including the Miss You Much chair dance which was chef’s kiss), and Look What You Made Me Do (So many hidden references that you could analyze for hours on end) I discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and I love finding more pop culture-focused content such as yours and giving credit where it’s due (Like with MJ).

As a kid of the nineties, I remember most of this VIVIDLY. Since this was so much of what I consumed as a child who loved singing/music, the current state of popular culture is a DIRECT result of what we were fed as children. And by the way I used to watch Janet’s rhythm nation video/in the tshirt from the concert that was gifted to me RELIGIOUSLY. Missy’s ‘I can’t stand the rain’ BLEW my baby mind, and I also loved Pop-Up Video. We lived through (and grew up during) a true evolution of the music/entertainment industry. For better or worse💜.
