Great reaction, thanks! Yes, "Monochrome" lyrics are very complex, with several layers of significance building an allegory. They tell about worst case scenario situations that can be applied to any adverse moment. They used all sort of "dark" metaphors here: cold, rain, loneliness, darkness even the mention of Ragnarök as you perfectly noticed. But in the end, they introduce a beam of hope and light saying literally that they will illuminate the world in rainbow colors. And the final line: "Just smile". The official lyric video is even more explicit visually, depicting several nuclear explosions, post-apocalyptic devastation, the Earth loosing the atmosphere, etc. Since Su-metal is from Hiroshima, we immediately related the song to the atomic bombing. I'm visiting Japan (and Hiroshima) in a couple of months and this song and all the research I do for my travel still hits me emotionally. This performance is so amazing, being this from the first concert of Momometal as a full-fledged member. And that moment when Su calls her and Moa is so special and became a personal favorite BABYMETAL moment right away. Since you are on their newer album songs, I suggest you "Divine Attack" and "MAYA", still from that album. And then you will need to go back... and expect the unexpected. 😁 Until next time! 🤘🦊

Great reaction you picked up on a lot of things . Su said if i got this right, it's a positive song . The day after Hiroshima, the atomic bomb was dropped, the survivors started to rebuild their city, and it ended up the beautiful, vibrant city it is today . The song might not just be about just that event but other catastrophic events and coming through them . I have witnessed this song live 3 times now , and the takeout out your phones and bring light to a dark, dark world never gets old and still hits me emotionally but leaves me with a positive feeling 😁🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼

Yes, I think it's clearly about Hiroshima - the bombing (you've got the umbrellas visible on the screens, which can be a symbol for it because of the parasol tree that survived) and the long night, followed by the return of life and colour and joy. Of course it can be about other apocalypses too, that's the beauty of song and symbolism. I have only seen it live once, but it was perhaps the most emotional song of the show.

Good reaction. Welcome to the crazy universe of BabyMetal. BabyMetal is an atypical heavy metal group, because they are idols. In Japan, idols are often paired with pop music (Jpop), and Babymetal was actually a subgroup of a larger idol group called Sakura Gakuin. Sakura was made up of girls between 10 and 15 years old dedicated to Jpop. When SuMetal (the singer) started she was 12 years old and MoaMetal/YuiMetal (the backup singers) were only 10 years old. Sakura represented the Japanese high school and the girls were distributed in clubs (traditional Japanese extracurricular activities such as cooking, swimming, basketball, sewing, etc.). One of the producers, a lover of heavy metal, saw that Su's singing could perfectly be used in metal and asked permission from the Mother House (Amuse) to create the heavy music club, proposing an experiment in fusion between metal and the pop. Nobody, as they themselves have confessed, had much hope for its outcome, but they gave it the green light and thus BabyMetal, Sakura Gakuin's heavy music club, was born. The first songs were intended for girls between 10 and 15 years old, who were Sakura's target audience. However, their quality and the fusion between pop and metal attracted attention beyond this audience and they began to frequent their metal concerts... a shocking audience of children and metalheads. And it worked, it worked so well that they began to support groups like Metallica, Red Hot, BMTH or Lady Gaga, I seem to remember, on their tours in Japan. And the Red Hot singer commented that he was impressed to realize that part of the public came to see them, not them. And so the base of BabyMetal fans grew. Sakura was a group in which, upon turning 15, the members had to leave (to pursue their careers elsewhere) and the producer (KobaMetal) requested permission again to create BabyMetal as an independent group. Success was already beginning to become a reality in Asia, so they authorized it, although Moa and Yui (they were still 13 years old) would also continue to be part of other Sakura clubs (I don't know when the poor girls studied, but they did). In 2014 a milestone would arrive in the group's history. They were already an established metal group in Asia that sold out concerts, but they had not yet made the leap to the West. In that year his song "Gimme Chocolate" rose to fame on RU-vid (currently 182M views) and attracted the attention of the producers of the Sonisphere festival. KobaMetal had doubts about taking the step, since their musical proposal (Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal, a genre of which they are considered creators) might not be accepted in the West and the metalheads who went to the Sonisphere had a reputation for saying goodbye to very bad manners to the artists they didn't like (even with bottles full of urine), but they were offered to go to one of the secondary stages (about 5000 spectators) and they ended up accepting. But the success of BabyMetal on RU-vid and the fact that all the concerts they were going to give in Europe were sold out in a few days, convinced the producers to take them to the main stage, where they would share with groups like Metallica, for example. How many girls (they were between 16 and 14 years old at that time) were "terrified" before going out, and they didn't know what scared them more: that they wouldn't understand their music and they would have to run away or that when they went out on stage it would be empty. . But the story was very different, not only was it not empty, but more than 50,000 metalheads, an estimated 95% of whom had never heard of them, finished their fifth and last song chanting "another one, another one." And that's how they achieved popularity in the West as well. They currently have 4 albums on the market: -Babymetal (2013): Their first album and the most childish of all, since they were between 15-13 years old when it came out and had energetic, positive music that left a smile on their faces. -Metal Resistence (2016): an album that, without losing the essence of the first, shows more mature music, going from childhood to adolescence. Songs like Karate were a large part of his presentation in the West. -Metal Galaxy (2018): a turning point in its style. Without abandoning their energy, they turned their attention to new forms of metal fusion (hip-hop, dance music, Hindu music or European folklore, among others), projecting a much more mature music in keeping with their age, which was already around 21 years old. of Su and the 18 of Moa (unfortunately Yui left the group due to health problems). And now in 2023 they have just released their new album "The Other One", which is, again, totally different from what they have done until now (one of the hallmarks of BabyMetal is that their songs are usually very different some from others (although they are all positive adrenaline releases). monochrome is from this album. Currently BabyMetal is considered the most important Heavy Metal group in Japan (I'm not saying the best, that's for everyone to decide) and the most influential in history in the West (it has reached levels that no other Japanese heavy group has reached before). ). The journey through the Babymetal galaxy may be long, but it is certainly entertaining and with a few songs it drags you with a smile into the fox hole.

Thank you for that wealth of information and history of the group. Well done, my friend! A little history of metal: Since its inception metal has not been viewed very highly especially in the US. There has never been any respect given to any bands that were heavy and metalheads didn't care, in fact it brought us together as a family. We bonded over our favorite bands and gave the finger to anyone who mocked or ridiculed us and our music. It birthed a rebellious attitude that blended well with early rap artists that were also shunned by the industry and the masses. We were happy that it wasn't played on the radio and were usually not on the charts. It made metal feel like it was ours and only ours. Groups that were not made 'organically" such as kids getting together in a garage to jam but were created by a record label for the purpose of making money, such as The Backstreet Boys were despised by the metal community. But metal musicians are very accepting and love all kinds of music, so accepting and bringing BABYMETAL into the fold does not surprise me from them. It's the metal fans that are hard to win over and some subgenres of metal will bash all other metal music that isn't in their subgenre. So, the fact that BABYMETAL has won over so many fans at these shows is monumental! I'm happy to have discovered them at this point in their evolution. I can't wait to see where they go and how they evolve as they get older. It's an exciting time! Thank you again, my friend! 🤘🦊🤘

Awesome reaction! This is one of my absolute favorites from Babymetal. You also picked up on a lot of the little things too! Song’s about facing a “monochromatic” catastrophe, but getting past it with a hopeful view to a “colorful tomorrow”. Fans speculate some connection with the Hiroshima bombing to Ragnorak due to imagery from MV, and Su being born there. But, even Su said this song is more about hope. The lines following “monochrome fireworks” progress from “what will we see…?”to “We will imagine…” to finally, “we WILL PAINT…” the night sky in rainbow colors, to mark a progression of confidence with hope to overcome the “Ragnorak”, and ending the song with an explosion of bright colors vs the entirely black and white ambiance. You’re seeing the Kami Band (west) here: Chris Kelly (guitar), CJ Masciantonio (guitar), and Clint Tustin (Bass), with all 3 from the band “Galactic Empire”. Anthony Barone (previously Shadow of Intent) is the beast on the drums. These guys were incorporated in 2019 to assist with touring, but has since became Babymetal’s primary backing band. If you want an even more epic performance, and a more “classic” metal feel, check out Road of Resistance (official)! Dragonforce co-wrote guitars on this one. 🤘🦊

@@BemusingBill My pleasure! The Kami Band (East) are also impressive, and they are Babymetal's original OG backing band since 2012. For simplicity sake, masks + dark robes = West (90% of the time). White face paint + white robes = East. Kami East: BOH (6-string bass), Takayoshi Ohmura (usually a pink glam guitar), Leda Cegnus (plays a lot of headless guitars), Mikio Fujioka (just an absolute virtuoso, unfortunately passed in Jan 2018, RIP), and Hideki Ayoma (speed drumming freak). There's a few other members throughout time filling in, but the above dudes are the core, of course, swapping in and out from show to show for the 4-member band.

Welcome back to BabyMetal's metalverse 🦊🤘🌐 Nice to see you around with this suggestion. Monochrome is another beautiful track from latest album, it was the 2nd single released in November last year and there's an official lyrics video really cool if you wanna enjoy the studio album version, later this year right before this concert you just saw they released the Piano Version at TFT surprising everyone with another stunning and beautiful one off version. The lyrics got some Norse mythology reference and when the lyrics vid came out there were many theories around, later they said they were surprised about it and saying they just wanna give a hopeful song. Here's some official info: _"One of the discovered 10 parallel worlds is MONOCHROME and this 2nd pre-release digital single “Monochrome” centers around this theme. From the eyes of the children, what color were the monochrome fireworks lighting up in the night sky? This song expresses the hopeful wish on Ragnarok, which signifies doomsday in Norse mythology, twinkling across the starry skies in rainbow colors."_ This was live at BabyMetal Begins - PIA Arena MM Clear Night, Yokohama on April 2, MomoMetal first concert as an official member, you can notice SuMetal speaking to them in the middle section and giving that recognition. They got this magical moment when performing live in every setlist they did throughout this whole World Tour 2023, and we'll definitely gonna see more in the next year. The composer behind this song is the same one behind Karate, Rondo Of Nightmare, Kagerou, the arrangement of Megitsune and also behind Believing from this same latest album, you should really not miss those songs. Next suggestion: - MAYA live at PIA Arena MM official MV. . Like SuMetal said at the end: "Just smile".🙂 Keep enjoying BM songs and hope to see you next year with more.🦊🤘🌈

This concert was at PIA Arena MM in Yokohama. The crowd was around 10,000, which is the sellout for the venue. It was a very difficult show to get tickets to as Babymetal usually play bigger venues in Japan, but all the other arenas in Yokohama were booked that weekend. Very nice reaction. I'm sure the song's meaning is open to interpretation. Mine is that it is about persevering during any dark times one may have in life. Many believe it is about the nuclear bombs because of the imagery in the lyric video and Su being from Hiroshima but the feel of the music, the lyrics, nor the presentation of the song make me feel it's apocalyptic. Its basically that life sucks sometimes but to keep your chin up. Keep believing it will be brughter days ahead. Of course i could be wrong but that's how i see it.
@BemusingBill
@BemusingBill 8 месяцев назад
I've read in the comments several different ideas behind the song. Officially: One of the discovered 10 parallel worlds is MONOCHROME and this 2nd pre-release digital single “Monochrome” centers around this theme. From the eyes of the children, what color were the monochrome fireworks lighting up in the night sky? This song expresses the hopeful wish on Ragnarok, which signifies doomsday in Norse mythology, twinkling across the starry skies in rainbow colors." So, I don't know if this song is part of a larger story like a concept album. My thoughts were doomsday with the monochrome firework (notice the use of the singular) referring to an atomic explosion. But there is that preserverance and that hopeful, rise-above feel to it. Su didn't write the song so unless the composer took her into account, I don't think it's connected to that. Thank you for the comment🤘🦊🤘

The singer Suzuka Nakamoto is from Nagasaki. We all know what happened there, and their world turned to black and white in an instance. But the town and the people survived the Ragnarok and bloomed into colors, like Suzuka, who now in her turn, is painting our monochrome world with her voice. This is how I like to conceive this particular song.

The song certainly seems about the end of the world, but with of hopefulness what comes after that. The visualizer points to that as well. Each song on The Other One is based off either a story or mythology from around the world, and then there is their own take on what they draw from it. They said that they like to leave it open ended, and let the listener draw from it what they want. They did a Monochrome piano version of the song on The First Take if you are interested in checking that out. It's always a popular video people like reacted to as it shows off Su's vocal capabilities. I would certainly recommend that one to come after the Monochrome live version.

Along the same lines, but I heard in an interview that it was Su's GREAT-grandmother - not grandmother - who was the survivor of Hiroshima as a girl. She wrote a poem about that experience. Seeing the flash. Discovering afterwards that she could no longer see in color, but only B&W. The poem was given to Su who made the lyrics for the song. An earlier tip to her great-grandmother's past is given in a journal about the origins of the song "Gimme Chocolate." After WWII when the American G.I.s there in Japan for the next several years were implementing the reconstruction of Japan under the Marshall Plan, the American G.I's were ALWAYS (playfully) waylaid by impoverished Japanese children who (for some) only knew the American phrase, "Gimme Chocolate! Gimme Chocolate!", and the G.I.'s would give the little (sometimes starving) kidlets Hershey's chocolate bars. It's quite profound how DEEP many of Babymetal's songs go, and yet Su always keeps the lyrics on a more positive reflection, not disparaging.

This is an older, previously unreleased, song brought forward for the new album. Apparently it is from more than 5 years ago (now) and by the sound and timbre of Su-'s voice the album track was plausibly recorded back then. Thanks for pointing out that Chris (or was it CJ) was using a multi-scale guitar. Of interest to me as a (former) amateur luthier. You called out some of the advantages, it also helps with improved intonation. Sort of taking the idea of a compensated saddle a step further.

It being subtitled, or 4K won't really matter. You can also just link the video in the description so people know what you are reacting to.

This song is somewhat based on Hiroshima bombing i believe. But written as a happy song but i feel you on the Nihilistic feels of it. Su said it was supposed to be a happy song but it feels heavy and dark to most fans. Much love to you and yours in the new year Bill.

Thank you, my friend! I read that it has something to do with 'the 10 parallel worlds'. Don't know what that means yet lol! Su didn't write it, but being from Hiroshima I'm sure that emotion came through in her performance. HNY to you and yours!🤘🦊🤘
