I seen a video with kids reacting to the Beetles and they were all saying they have to be using auto tune but I had to laugh because it did not even come til 96
Jonathan Cain said Steve Perry recorded the studio version of Mother Father in one take. His vocals are so beautiful and emotive. Steve wrote or co-wrote most of Journeys iconic songs with Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon who has said they were able to write the music with so much range because of Steve's vocal capabilities. When Jonathan first heard Steve he said there was "no way" Steve could sound as good live as he does in studio recordings. Check out The Escape Tour live from Houston 1981. There will never be another Steve Perry, many have tried, but no one comes close to The Voice.
In an interview Steve Perry stated this was the most vocally challenging song he ever performed and yet he sings it effortlessly!!! Love Journey!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Steve Perry was/is known as The Voice for a very valid reason. I was lucky enough to see Journey live back in the 80s and let me tell you, they were AMAZING. Very few groups can compare today.
I was somewhat disappointed when I saw them in 1983. They seemed tired compared to the warmup act,Bryan Adams! Steve's voice was nowhere as good as in this video, must have been late in the tour!
Steve "The Voice" Perry not only was the best at what he did, but EVERY song that he sang came from his inner being. You watch his face while he is singing his song, no matter what it is, he is into it. I was blessed to see him on stage and he was amazing. Have fun enjoying Journey!
Wow, I can’t believe I had never heard this song before! SO moving! And Steve Perry, amazing!! Those runs he did with his voice! Jumping octaves! And he didn’t scream, he sang! Hearing this song makes me even sadder that Steve left the group.
No question that the 80s fashions are nowhere to be seen these days. But...can anyone sing like Steve right now? No auto-tune, no lip synch, no tracks...Just a guy singing. Steve Perry never struggled; he had perfect vocal technique. He had an extraordinary mixed voice, which means that the tone was the same from the bottom to the top of his vocal register. There were few times when he actually went into falsetto. And because he was a tenor altino, most guys could not even approach his upper register, much less nail the top notes like it was nothing.
When they recorded this song in the studio Steve did it in one take. You got it right it is effortless for him to sing, it comes naturally. Granted he had been singing several songs previously before he got to his one. His stage presence is the best, he likes to interact with the crowd. Here's the link to the full Live In Houston 1981 concert. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-73hD2BJ1BBs.html After watching this live performance, there won't be any doubt in your mind that Steve "The Voice" Perry is the greatest vocalist of all time in rock. And there were many great ones from back in the day.
Interesting to note that Steve actually started as a drummer. The entire band has great skills on their own. They pretty much created arena rock and rock ballads
Bill Graham Productions were the first to use cameras filming and projecting onto screens on either side of the stage. Day On the Green 1983 was the first time. The book in the box set of Journey has a copy of the newspaper article about the show, and I WAS THERE!
As it happened..the one of best singers and the one of the best guitarist in the world met up in Journey...Jonathan Cain is a killer on the piano and the same with rest of the band...But Steve and Neal really something out of this world...And at this very performance..this song...they all did the best performance I ever seen or heard them do in any video...And that concert..well I envy all that was there....wow..just wow...
Steve Perry, Neal Schon, and Steve Smith are arguably the greatest musicians of their era. Steve Smith is among the greatest drummers of the last 50 years!
I was 12 when this album came out. Like all Journey fans during that era, our formative years were musically captured by the supernatural-like vocals of Steve Perry and the sound of this great band, then and for years to come. Good to see the younger generation of fans appreciate their sound and recognize such beautiful music because unfortunately it's not made today!
“Why Can’t This Night Go On Forever” is one of the greatest unheard love songs. Steve really shines and Neal gets ample solos. Play this for your girl on Valentines Day! You won’t be disappointed.
Never forget this guy Soo special people fantastic singer ever Soo smooth sweet sounds already Mr perry still the one the golden voice ever no body can sing like Mr perry anymore 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Dude Freddy was awesome too. Freddy was interviewed once and was asked how it felt to be the best singer. His reply was . I don't know why don't you ask Steve Perry. He was a fan of Perry's. As are we all . Lol
I really enjoyed watching your reaction to Mother, Father, thank you so mich. I've been a huge Journey fan for many years, and I feel so fortunate that I grew up during that time. I feel like we had some of the best music. Steve Perry's voice is so angelic and magical. There are so many songs of theirs that I love, but a few that I could think of for reaction videos would be "Winds of March" from 1978, "Faithfylly," ""Still They Ride," Don't Stop Beleivin'," and "Who's Cryin' Now?"
Always watch Journey or most 80's groups live. They earned their way performing for audiences and they really know how to engage them. Another Journey song to try is Still They Ride
This is my favorite Journey song and I`m so happy I got to see him perform this live twice in the 80s easily one of the best concerts I`ve ever been to..They have always been my #1 group!
Steve Perry was so amazing. No auto tune. Just pure talent. BTW, his Nick name across the radio waves was “The Voice” And your comment about him being no Freddie Mercury…. no kidding. He leaves Mercury in the dust!!!! So glad you discovered Journey and Steve Perry!!!! The 1980’s belonged to Journey!!!
This is my fav, really shows off Steves phenomenal vocals and his control (same live as recorded). The band is amazing, perfect together. Love it. Thanx so much, Peace
Steve Perry, the Voice; Neal Schon, one of the best melodic guitar players ever; Jonathan Cain, classically trained keyboardist and amazing song writer; Steve Smith, voted all-around best drummer 5 years in a row; Ross Valory, the original Journey bassist known for his progressive style. A phenomenal band! Check out Still They Ride.
This performance is why so many people regard Steve as one of the greatest vocalists ever. Check some of the R&B tunes the band jammed on the Time3 set - he's amazing. And don't underestimate Neal Schon (guitar) he actually founded Journey- after he left Santanna's band in the early-70's. He's a phenomenal talent, too.
Separate Ways, Faithfully, Be Good To Yourself, Lights, Open Arms, Who's Crying Now, Send Her My Love, Wheel in the Sky, When You Love a Woman, Why Can't this Night Go on Forever, Suzanne, I'll Be Alright Without You, etc... etc... etc...
With everything you said about The Voice Steve Perry, in studio he did this song in 1 take!! That's amazing!! You have to check out 1979 departure tour in Oaska Japan and listen to, People and Places, Precious Time and Dixie Highway. The 1st 2 are incredible
Great reaction! Here is why Steve Perry is the best in my opinion (yes, better than Freddie!): Emotion - nobody makes you feel the song like he does. He pulls you into the story. Mercury's only emotion was adding grit to his vocals. Vibrato - it is natural and consistent. Freddie's was so inconsistent, and he admitted he struggled with it. Pitch - Perry's pitch both live and in the studio was impeccable. Freddie was often pitchy, going a bit off-key. Control - not just pitch and vibrato, but the way he can seamlessly bounce from high-to-low notes was unmatched. Influence - Perry drew from the great R&B / Black Gospel-type singers (Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding), which you can really hear in this video. Mercury was trained in opera (I hate opera!).
Freddie is overrated in my opinion. He always sang like he was at a broadway musical instead of a concert. Very dramatic and no feeling in his singing.
For more Journey (and you can't go wrong with anything by them), I would suggest Faithfully, Wheel in the Sky, Stone in Love, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' and Feelin' That Way/Anytime from their 1978 Midnight Special appearance.
The ending was so Steve could rest his vocals, I believe. I read that they highlighted each musician in the group each time they sang this for that reason. This concert just happened to be the time for Cain Edited to change text to rest
Omg so appreciated watching you react to this mind blowing masterpiece and seeing ypu realize Steve The Voice Perry is in a league far above any singer in history. Thank you so much for this!! So very much. ❤
At the height of Journey's fame my brother (a struggling drummer) found himself in an elevator with Steve Perry, bending his ear about music. He was very friendly and down earth according to my bro. Check out I'll Be Alright Without You 🎵🎶💚
I was at this concert in Houston at the Summit (which is now Joel Osteen's church) in 1981. Little did I know then that this concert would become one of the most iconic Steve Perry live performances EVER. The concert (as seen in other songs as well) was flawless. The band were all at the top of their game which only made Steve's vocals that much better. BTW, it is said by Steve that he performed this song in the studio in ONE take. Check it out. Also, check out the isolated vocals of Steve Perrry's voice on these songs. All talent. No machines, no autotune...just men with their instruments and microphones. It is the way music should be presented.
I had the privilege of seeing Journey on this tour and on tow other tours with Perry at the helm (yes I’m that many years old) and they were phenomenal. Perry never missed a note and Schon/Cain/Vallory/Smith were all amazing in their own right. I laughed when he said that Schon’s first solo wasn’t that hard…it wasn’t hard for him because he has been playing professionally (with the likes of Carlos Santana) since he was 15!!! I was saddened when the Perry fronted lineup parted ways…I saw them earlier this year and they were still good with Schon KILLING it on guitar, but nothing could compare with Perry out front.

Hello. I subscribed to your page through Journey, especially Steve Perry, who in my opinion is one of the greatest interpreters that have ever existed and is highly underestimated. After looking at countless criticisms of Journey's performances, I haven't come across any that say Steve isn't voice privileged. I am also a fan of Mercury and even so it seems to me that it is debatable in terms of vocal capacity. Mercury was a great Showman but Perry for me is the voice. Many judge Steve for not having the reaches of before, but what would have happened if Mercury had to suffer the same judgment today? It's not fair. Steve should be recognized for what he left us and what he can provide now. He did not die and he did not have such a controversial life, he did not have a movie and the new generations know him. But, that does not detract from his unparalleled contribution to music. Hopefully and the new generations can know about him. I thank you so much for taking the time to get to know him and I hope you make him known because he deserves it. Thank you
Steve Perry é indescritível. Não haverá outro. Ele fazia todos os tons na mesma música. E, nessa, ele fez isso. Falou que foi a música mais difícil de cantar. Essa banda era perfeita com Steve. Baterista, guitarrista, tecladista.. É, claro, a voz mais linda do mundo.. Steve Perry.. 💜💜💜🤍🤍🤍
Steve is absolutely flawlessly and effortlessly talented. He is so greatly blessed from above! Hands down one of the absolutely BEST vocalist of all time!!! Love him!!!
Steve Perry's "regular" singing voice is pure, but in this song he uses a whole range of styles: some raspy rock scream, some soul, and then he goes from that sound seamlessly into the tone that blends on the harmonies, and then the falsetto that has the same tonal quality as the rest of his range.
I call STEVE PERRYS VOICE the VOICES . HE HAS SUCH A BROAD BROAD RANGES AND HIGH PICTURES ON LEVELS THAT ARE UNBELIEVABLE. JOURNEY IS MY BAND OF A LIFETIME.
Not falsetto. Perry was a tenor altino then, a very pure voice that sang up in soprano range. It is a type of countertenor but not a common one. The nickname The Voice was given him by Jon Bon Jovi. The way he could sing while trotting all over the stage was crazy. All the songs on the Escape album are great but there are a lot more to discover.
Eating your words with the mayonnaise parked behind your couch😂 Edit to say,, Your response is spot on how each instrumentalist just shined here. I'm a huge fan of journey having grown up in 70s but I haven't heard this song before and perry's vocals are absolutely out of this world with the falsetto.
The piano solo is not actually part of the song. For your next reaction I recommend either “Stone in Love” or “Who’s Crying Now,” from the same live in Houston 1981 concert.
The lyrics are very sad and emotional, especially for Steve. The breaking up of his parents really affected him. He had some love relationships throughout his life, but never married or had kids.
He actually Fathered a daughter out of wedlock when he was 21, though he didn't find out about her until he was 34. Also has 2 grandsons. He took her as his "date" to the Monster premier with Patty Jenkins. She has long curly hair and his nose. So he has a family after all, and got to be crazy grandpa at many Giants games.
