I grew up listening to both & have mad respect for Queen / Freddie Mercury and their place in musical history, but I will take Steve Perry's voice all day, everyday. I can't hear it without being amazed, no matter how many years go by, or how many times I hear the song. His voice soars & takes me along for the ride. Stunning!

Steve said that this performance is one of his favorites. He couldn't do this song every night because it was so very difficult but he loved singing it. Steve always pushed himself to do better so he kept writing more and more difficult songs to challenge himself. Yup... he was a BEAST!

Which is incredibly dangerous to do if your singing technique is not used to singing in that style. He was definitely an R&B singer and very soft in his approach at least in the beginning. He sometimes pushed his vocals a little too far later.

One of the best things you realize years later after you've grown up with these bands and all this talent, is that these people were just walking around with this ability to reach you though their music at their will... If I had to pick one video to turn someone on to rock n’ roll for the first time, I honestly think I would show them this. It honors the beauty of rock n’ roll in its purest and most representative form. Perfect and angelic and beastly vocals. Beautiful message. Guitarist and pianist flexing hard. Drummer holding it down in the back. It’s as close to perfect as you can get. ❤

Steve Perry did things vocally live few vocalists ever do- pitch accurate every time. That’s tough without technology, this guy- no problem. This lyric.....oh my....❤️🎼🤘😎cool thing about Rock n Roll- we can love both Freddie and Steve- Queen and Journey both. ❤️

Freddy Mercury was amazing but I think Steve Perry was the better vocalist. Freddie could be pitchy live but Steve was a vocal beast. His live performances to me were better sometimes than the studio versions. Both were incredible singers but to me, Steve was beyond incredible. His vocals were other worldly.

I agree. Freddie was amazing and had a great range but Steve Perry's voice was beyond amazing. People have tried to autotune some of his tracks and couldn't find anything to tune except the sliding notes Steve liked to do.

Well Freddie was more Rock oriented where Steve was straight pop. Freddie got softer as time went on with Queen but Steve came straight out the box that way.

@@toodlescae When Steve was above or below pitch, it was INTENTIONAL-- those who have tried to even tune those moments found that his intervals couldn't be tuned properly to the nearest pitch because his intentional pitch bending was found to have been done with such amazing complexity, it never sounded out of tune with the song he was singing!!!

@@jaxsquier What???? Have you heard Journey's tunes prior to the Escape album-- nothing pop about those. Rock n Roll styles along with R&B. Have you ever heard Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin? Freddie was as a brute belter, he never really began smoothing things out until rock theater had played itself out with audiences through the Disco era. It's one of the main reasons why things got smoother after that era, because 80s pop smoothed things out a little more with all the ballads and Rock "theater" never really made a comeback-- Freddie really spearheaded into the 80s with Stadium Rock. In the 70s and 80s, rock crooners were allowed to sound a little less smooth in pitch and tone-- think of Greg Rollie and Perry singing together on the same tunes. When Rollie was singing, the tunes were not as smooth for a lead singer as when Perry took over lead singing duties. You said, "look how he goes back into the chorus... that was so greatly put together. " He gives it his all when his vocals accompany, and you see him sag afterward, and then it fades into the keyboards, and the band said the purpose of that was to allow Steve time to recover after that effort.

I wish I could fully explain how crazy wonderful this song is and Steve singing it and tearing it up. That "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" part is so amazing. He just soars with no effort it seems to the stratosphere and back down and back up again. Then the angelic "ah" or "wah" he sings at the end is goose bump raising. He makes it look so easy but it's definitely not, just for him though.

It’s a time musically that can never be recreated. Those times are done. I was 15 at this time. Soooo many memories. Steve was an amazing vocalist... Powerful. But Freddie was able to do everything... His songs were different. He could do Rhapsody, than Somebody to Love, than Killer Queen, than Crazy Little Thing called Love, then love of My Life. They all sounded different Steve's songs all sounded the same.

Steve`s vocal performance was beyond words, but the thing that many people miss, is that Jonathon Cain really changed the song writing dynamic and really wrote to bring out the best in the band. He was the final cog in the machine for the group and gave them the opening they needed to reach their best records.

Warms my heart to see young adults today appreciating the music that I grew up listening to! Journey is my all time favorite band & this song in particular. Not sure if you're aware that Steve Perry did this song in 1 take in studio, shows how amazingly talented he is! & the guitarist Schon was the guitarist for Santana back in the early 70's, left & formed a backup band b4 forming Journey & Perry joined in 76-77. He left in 96 due to being diagnosed with throat cancer, he made a full recovery & as of a couple years ago has considered returning to sing & I hope he does!!!

He had a bone disease, requiring a hip replacement operation. He didn't get cancer until 2013, when he had Melanoma on the right side of his face. He released his first album in 22 years in Oct. 2018.
