I think (I might be wrong) that "Believe" from Cher (the one where they are using a very obvious autotune) was actually the first song to use autotune. It was a specific artistic choice to create a distinct "sound" for that track: after that, autotune became "a thing" and it was everywhere, basically defining the beginning of the 2000s
@justineanglemyer3980

Not the first, but definitely the most popular. There’s a song from the 80s called Computer Love by Zapp. And why that may still not be the “first” it’s the first one that came to my mind.

It was the first really popular song to feature those hard Autotune "breaks". Other people had done it before by doing slides up and down. In Believe it is preprogrammed or added in post, that is basically the only way to really get the breaks on the beat.

So I did some research on Cascada's "everytime we touch", and it was released in the 2000's. However, that song borrows the chorus of Maggie Reilly's song of the same name. That version of "everytime we touch" was released in 1992. (it's more of a slower song, but Maggie's voice is beautiful)

But the original is not a dance song. Moreover, the only thing the 2 versions share is the refrain, and here Kirstin is definitely singing the lyrics from Cascada's version, which makes it be distinctly out of place. But it's a good song, so I'll give it a pass

Ben Bram is Pentatonix' frequent collaborator on arrangements, especially their complex medleys. He was co-winner with PTX on their first two Grammy Awards (for the arrangements of the Daft Punk Medley and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy). You should try to get an interview with him to talk about the craft of song arranging and specifically how they approached this latest project. As for the Cher "Believe" segment, I think they re-created the effect as a homage to the original version which also deliberately made use of over-the-top auto-tune.
@christophertriana6582
@christophertriana6582 3 года назад
Just out of curiosity, is it possible to fake the autotune effect? To make it sound like you're using it but actually just using your voice. If it is, I wouldn't put it past this group, they are amazingly talented.

The funny thing about Auto Tune in Cher's song is actually that they used it wrong intentionally. The effect was originally created in 1997 in order to correct vocals and instruments that sounded off. But the producers of Cher's song discovered the robotic vocal sound by using Auto-tune at its highest setting.

On Believe, Cher was the first singer to ever use autotune as an artistic effect instead of a correction method, so this was a tribute to her. Lord knows, Cher never needed to use autotune to correct anything, considering she is one of the greatest singers of all time. Unfortunately, too many people that seriously CAN'T sing started using autotune, and now it is horrendously over-used in the industry. But I definitely understand its use in this song.

I love the seamless transitions from one song to the next. They do it so well. Yes the "auto tune" homage to Cher's "Believe" was really special and yes back in the 90's Cher introduced it and it was picked up by quite a few artists, mostly rapp, pop and R & B, as well as some other voice enhancement devices. The 90's was the electronic era. At any rate this medley was very well done and super fun. I want to hear them do a Disco medley.

They said they put the auto tune in to pay homage to the original artists. Cher did use it.

That song by Cher was all auto tuned that was it's signature sound. Also Cher was still hot when she did that. And I was way younger. Seems to me she did that song on a battle ship in front of a bunch of sailors while not wearing a whole ton of clothes. So a cheesy old lady shaking her stuff in front of a bunch of kids. But I liked that song, even though my straight up preference is Gospel, CCM and Southern Gospel. I admire talent in almost every genre. I have adored PTX from the get-go I mean from the time they sang "we are, PENTATONIX" I love your breakdowns. As a singer myself, I glean little details to improve my game. I'm a worship leader. God bless. (disclaimer: I love music, don't always like the message)

You’re correct, not all are from the 90s. Still great!

"Every Time We Touch" came out in 1992 by Maggie Reilly, but Cascada covered it in 2006 when it really hit big.

Cascada covered it in 2005... and yeah, it was big. It's clear they are singing the dance version Cascada made popular though... but I'm not complaining because I love that version.

Life after love is a heavily auto tuned track, which is, I'm guessing, why they used auto tune there.

Cher doing it with autotune effect in 1999 is why Adam Lambert's version in 2009 on America Idol was so cool
