So I gave "Pray" a 4/5 but I found myself listening to it the other day while in a drunken stupor. I haven't done that with any other opening I've listened to so I guess I have to give it a 5/5 now. 😕
Hey btw as you said, switch between comedy and seriousness can be very bad if the writer isn't skilled. Fortunately tho, gintamas writer is a goddamn genius and the most beloved writer in japan! Gintama handles comedy and seriousness so awesomely that it's now my no. 1 anime, replacing the previous ones I had on that spot like attack on Titan and code geass
Hopefully you are actually watching the anime because the manga is funny and serious too but the anime takes it to the next level I recommend the Anime with all of my soul
What's more amazing is I read somewhere that Sorachi when writing those serious arcs (except the lastest arcs), he wasn't planning it, he was only getting carried away with the story.
The thing about gintama is that it's actually very good at balancing comedy and dramatic action. and trust me, when you reach the serious arcs, you'll be begging for the comedy because the serious arcs hit hard.
Thorfinn Karlsefni ngl I watched most of shonene anime's except for one piece, the serious arcs from 300 above are good it had some realistic moments and depressing shit. After all of that you want the comedy to return.
It got really serious in the beginning of FS arc, I need to watch the Toilet Paper scene. Everything just changes all of the sudden to full serious unlike the usual serious arcs and I was not ready. I want the usual stupid episodes really badly. I don't care if it's only background episode, FS arc was really hard to watch because there was too many emotions.
Not really specially one piece has a few boring op at least for me . Fmab doesn't have many op so i don't compare with this long anime . And i believe in being good in every op black clover is better than naruto and i put naruto and gintama on about the same level in having no bad op .fairy tail and bleach has some bad op in my opinion specially the fillers but for me all of gintama op are above average with some good bangers that when you listen to them while watching the series they hit even harder. Anyway that'smy opinion
26:06 Already happened actually, Demon Slayer's mangaka said she was inspired by Sorachi and they did some collabs earlier this year if I'm not mistaken.
@@czysty3282 Don't compare both of them, they both have their own unique setting and story. It is just like when you compare sushi and chocolate candy. It is really pointless to compare because they have their own identity.
In my opinion the first 50 episodes are kinda rough if you dont get along with the comedy in the beginning but it really improves from arc to arc and becomes one of the funniest shit ive ever seen. Ah yeah and the serious arcs definitely slap.
since it looks like he's interested in gintama comedy,i think it will easier for him to enjoy the first 50 episodes, compare to those who interested in the action
when you said Gintama and demon slayer collab The author of demon slayer is actually a huge fan of Gintama and did a collab wit them on the Gintama final movie
@@emeraldwolf3494 honestly, shogun assassination and farewell shinshengumi are probably the two best shounen arc I've seen yet. And trust me, I've seen alot of other great shounen arc too
To answer your question about how it handles it tone changes, simply yes. Gintama is probably one of the most bipolar toned anime and it surprisingly excels on that high risk high reward storywriting, the author Hideaki Sorachi did such a phenomenal job on finding the balance between when to use comedy and when to implement action and drama. Gintama is really comedic centric with a huge plot around (Gintoki)main character's past. No exaggerating he's deffo one of or if not the best protagonist out there, he has a different style of developing his character for the audience which makes us love that relatable idiot so much. I don't really wanna spoil since you're probably going to watch it, I honestly had a pretty slow start with Gintama since it said that it starts slow. So many of my friends dropped it because of the barrage of early comedy episodes. (And i love that idiotic nonsensical humor) And i found out it was my type of humor, plus i was really depressed that time after my grandma died, a break up and family separation because of an eruption here in the Philippines. Probably cured my depression no joke. Just take your time watching it,, since we all have more important things to do and the fanbase is amazing and wholesome it's one of a kind, we will probably not find any gem like this in a very long time. Sorry for rambling lmao youre awesome
I feel like most people who loves Gintama always had that one period of time when Gintama become their savior. I was watching Gintama in my lowest point too. Madao keeps me going with life. So many life lessons in this comedy anime.
@@Nofian-s1gsame here. Gintama made me happy when I felt there wasn’t anything worth being happy about. It was the only thing that could really make me smile and laugh my ass off at that time. And to think that it’s already over… Thankfully we’re getting Ginpachi Sensei and other projects. Though I heard that the Baragaki arc movie is gonna be a Japan exclusive which would suck if its true.
Gintama is really balanced , I love how not a single female character is bad all the characters are well written , there might not be a story at first but it gets developed through time honestly one of the best animes of all time
Gintama is like nichijou + aot + the office but its perfectly blend you wont complain if the series do the unthinkable..the setting of this anime make for a billion of possibilities..they goes from finding missing cat to fighting the demon lord back to trying the next popular dating sim then goes to a idol handshake session and back to saving the universe
@@thehomiedamian mission accomplished😎 Just dont drop it..theres a few bad episodes sometimes because its a long series and the budget that the studio were handed were based on the premise that there'll be alot of dialogue..but they are creative and got initiatives to turn that into pros..and I promised you its an upward spiral from episode 3..the first 2 episode is a filler to celebrate its getting an adaptation but they miss the mark and leave off a bad impression so avoid those.
If I didn't watch Gintama I would call BS on your example at the end right there. But yeah, it happened and I'm surprised that it happened even though I watched it.
It made me freaking cry 😢 I also remember when one of The reactors I watched started crying at that OP and was like "WTF am I crying, I feel like a took a journey without taking a journey?!" 😆
36:35 In the beginning it is very subtle you can't notice it if you haven't watched all of it really. They always joke that Gintama got no plot. But it is there being scattered in the episodes and serious arcs. The foreshadowings are also good. Gintama got a lot of building. The characters and the settings are slowly being build. Then when the time comes, the plot really hits hard.
I highly recommend you watch the anime, the manga is kind of a nightmare to read in the beginning. And the voice actors MAKE the show. They do a lot of cool things with the openings that break the 4th wall which are fun. Gintama lives and breathes the concept of taking both comedy and serious moments and perfectly balancing them together, imo.
16:47 the first 5/5. The reason why they did that funny face and open with a banger is that because the anime made a comeback after a long break, you can also see the resolution changed here. So they used and made an opening that fits gintama the most.
Gintama is 70% comedy and 30% shounen. I'd say that the comedy is what hooks people to the cast, and when serious stuff happens the audience can't help but to sympathize with these characters. It's a beautifully made show with a very interesting plot, one of the reasons of the cast acting all goofy is because it's their way of coping up with their past.
"Did the main character find out he had syphilis?" if you watched the show, that wouldn't come as a suprise. But good video, now do the Gintama Endings
25:40 The absolute best in anime when switching between comedy and action. I won't ask you to go watch it now. Find your own time, start by watching one or two episodes a day till you feel like watching more. P.S. start with ep3
@@thehomiedamian The first two episodes are fillers and are celebrating the manga getting an anime adaptation, it assumes you have read the manga and there are characters that won't appear until 20 or so episodes in. The real first episode is episode 3, but you can go back later to episodes 1 and 2 if you want.
@@thehomiedamian eps 1 and 2 are fillers. Its meant for the manga readers celebrating Gintama got animated. So for anime watcher, its better to skip it. Chapter 1 starts at Episode 3.
I always thought it was a very ballsy move from Gintama to make their first two episodes fillers. Ngl that made me dropped it cuz I had no idea what's going on the first time I checked it 😂
Why are people being salty on his other videos? The Homie Damian literally knows more about music than 99.99% of his viewers. Btw please react to One Piece next!
14:23 Nope, gintama came out before code geass so it's not a reference. But Gintama does make references to other anime like dragon ball and one piece sometimes Watch the endings too they are fire too
They also had a reference to Code Geass/Legend of the Galactic Heroes in episode 203 with Sogo, but that was in like 2013. Only reason I know the episode number is cause it was the second episode of Gintama'
Bro, I love your style of the videos. The honesty, rawness, accuracy, and deliverance are ON POINT. I'm so glad you aren't pretending for the views and actually laying down your honest opinions. I'm a sucker for Gintama and each time I heard any opening I'd scream, jizz, and faint but to see it from someone who didn't watch the show was honestly an amazing and refreshing experience and it was a very authentic one. I'm glad you weren't just messing around and screaming 5/5 for every opening but saying your honest opinions and even breaking down instrumental and vocals. Been listening to Japanese music for almost 10 years now, this is all coming from a hardcore (but mature) fan of J-rock and Gintama. You fucking rock man, keep grinding 💪🔥
Appreciate it fr 🙏 I wouldn't be able to do those fake exaggerated reactions even if I wanted too since I'm really bad at hiding when I don't like something lmao 😂
25:36 I can say with confidence that no other work of art in the world is better at shifting mood than Gintama. And on a crazy scale. Not only between arcs or season. One minute you are crying (because when Gintama gets serious it does it better than any shounen) and the next minute you laugh with those tears in your eyes, snot everywhere. No disconnect or weirdness.
Gintama the Goat of shounen comedy, react to Beastars Openings and Endings, there’s only 2 of each but I think you’ll genuinely enjoy them. One was the most listened to on Spotify by far for last seasons anime
Gintama is without a doubt the best piece of media I’ve seen that can seamlessly and unproblematically transition from completely different genres and tones without missing a beat. It’s nothing short of brilliant, and u gotta check it out.
Just finished Gintama last night. I thought I would hate it because I don't like comedy, shonen or long anime, but it slowly became one of my favourite anime which surprised me so much. Definitely worth watching.
4:32 “Who tf are these Code Geass people” *Fun Fact lol* Same studio who adapted Code Geass *(Sunrise)* also adapted Gintama, but then again Code Geass’ character designs where by *CLAMP.*
It was the damn music that sucked me into this anime but kept tuning in cuz it made me laugh. Didn't take long before I was invested in the characters so the serious arcs that flesh out their backstories seemed like it fit in well with the comedy overall. The video clips are perfect because Gintama is a show about samurai, aliens, robots, thieves, the Shogun, honor, love, science, death, dinner, gore, ninjas, spaceships, pirates, rebels, weapons, Shonen Jump, weather, animals, TV, sports, stalkers, law, the Shinsengumi, money, anime, cosplay, sugar, fighting and parodies of One Piece. According to the T-shirt anyway?
@@thehomiedamian BTW, your critique of the music was truly spot on....if you had been one of my music professors I would have quit the music business & got a "real" job way sooner. The truth can be harsh at times but it is always educational.
WOA this is so cool!! As a huge Gintama fan, I genuinely enjoyed listening to your analysis on the music and ended up agreeing with you on a lot of things!! Subscribed!
When u mentioned how sadaharu has competition for ur spot as fave character, I hope you do watch the entire anime and find a special episode that I find what u said to be absolutely perfect🤣😉
My opinion is that Know Know Know is the second best opening in the series. I really like the voice of the vocalist Wataru Ujihara, and the instrumental is amazing for me it is a 5/5. When you watch the anime all the way to the shogun assassination arc to where opening 17 is you can kind of correlate it how later in the series it gets more and more serious. DOES is actually known to have one of the greatest vocalists in Japan.
Same here, but I guess vocals at least is a matter taste for everyone. I personally love his vocals and, despite really liking Sakuramitsutsuki, I can't stand the vocals of the Spyair singer.
I can confirm that (as someone who was really hyped back then Gintama was able to continue at all, and then watching that op for the first time). It's still my fav op, maybe partially because of the aspect you mentioned.
gintama is both comedy and a tragic one in our main character. not gonna try spoiling it but. our mcs name is gintoki hes an war veteran. that a lot of tragic things happend in his past and is just running away from it but its still catching up on him. this anime is both comedy and seriousness its not easy to get through and cant just be binge until u start to like it. the seriousness of the anime and arcs gets better and better throughout the series. the serious tones is very nice and well done when it switches getting serious and u might even be intrested in his past. and im happy u like tongekyo and other ops like op 13 too! ;) and nO its not an shinobi war its way better lmao and important.
18:46 Did some die in this arc? Me: chuckles ehehe if only knew 18:49 Does the main character realize he has syphilis? Me: chokes* realizing how close he just got to the real answer👀
I know you made that TRIGGER joke because of a seemingly sudden emergence of aliens in the final OPs, but aliens are present from the very start of the series. This show is really good at having non-spoilery OPs, reactors usually can't tell what the heck the plot even is even though they saw 21 Openings. I do recommend reacting to the EDs though.
Gintama touched my soul but many people find it boring because so many say it's the goat it's legendary so they think they gonna watch the greatest masterpiece! But you just must take it for what it is: Gintama has his own vibe no one other has its a great comedy but at the same time it's the deepest and intense shit. The characters are the best i ever seen its just a piece vibe for me because I just watched it randomly on TV
Out of the 120+ anime I've watched . Gintama is the only one that breaks my top 5 in multiple categories. At least Comedy, Action, Emotional moments, Characters, Soundtrack & voice acting come to mind. I'd say it's only 3 possible downsides are that 1. it starts somewhat slow/episodic, making it difficult to binge if you aren't completely into the humor 2. The 4:3 aspect ratio and old animation of the early seasons isn't for everyone, even if it was good for its time 3. It's long and a big time commitment But overall it's amazing, and I'm quite happy it's long. Sad that it ended
Gintama has great OSTs and Endings as well. And for anyone interested what I believe that it's strong point is that all of the characters, from the main trio to the background ones, are amazing. They are good enough to carry episodes where they literally do nothing.
People say Gintama 80% comedy 20% serious but I say 70% comedy 30% serious, and starting episode 300 and above the ratio drastically reverse 80% serious 20% comedy (excluding season 6 Slip arc)
2022 and he finally started watching Gintama :) I'm really happy I found you. Looking back what you said at 33:59 this is exactly what Gintama is about. Just indulge yourself in the moment, enjoy the show without the technicalities. The main reason why some find it hard to watch is because they just can't sit down, watch, and enjoy. They always think if "is that funny? am I supposed to be happy cuz this is comedy?" just don't think and if you don't find it funny, then don't worry. There's 369 episodes! you'll surely find your humour. The point is, you let loose then you'll feel how enjoyable Gintama really is.
The Anime is for sure COMEDY but when you get serious ARCS it knows when to get real and you do get into it and yes its got story and the guy in the last OP is like Madara mans was a menace
Gintama knew how to really sync openings with the visuals. It's amazing how many higher budget animes can't sync the audio and visuals. Alos, hooray for alcoholism
They handle the comedy and serious really smoothly, this is why it’s considered one of the best animes out there, it’s not for everyone, like Mushishi, but if you like a little bit of everything, like parody, comedy, action, drama, and other genres like these ones, you’ll love it
Pretending to do important things to booze up, wondering if your headphone wire is strong enough to strangle you.... You and Gintama would get along PERFECTLY. 😏 Especially if you're a fan of Nichijou. This takes it to a whole nother level where this is an actual plot that actually pays off at the end. And if your worried about the +360 episodes, don't be. This adventure wrapped up a couple of months ago, so all you need to do is enjoy the ride whenever you decide to get on board.
whoaaaaaa, I cant believe Im so so happy watching your gintama reaction. Gintama is my favorite anime of all time. I always thought their OPs EDs and OSTs are the best, but that maybe cause im biased lol. I feel like my feeling was somehow validated because of your reaction, lol. Thank you!!!! ps: really recommending gintama, if you enjoy absurd comedy, you'll enjoy their early seasons, keep following it and dude, you'll get some of the best shonen arcs and fights. also, lmaoooo at "does mc has siphylis?" I would say, thats a close guesss!!! lol also, good choice! both sperm head dudes are brilliant choice in gintama lol
@@thehomiedamian go watch it on your own time, who knows you might be enjoying it :) also, gintama is one of the show that the anime is better than the manga. the voice acting and osts just add a LOT to it
Since you asked. The balance between the comedy and the heavy arcs are probably the best you can get in anime. The direction of the anime (and the writing of gorilla, i mean Sorachi-sensei) did it so well, too well actually, but if you give this one a watch, let me tell you its probably going to be the best decision honestly XD, the first every Anime cast where i found nobody annoying and i hella treasure everybody.
Love your way of dissecting the songs and explaining it. Just gave a whole new perspective to listen to openings from now P.S: You got to review Gintama's Endings. They are fire and better than some of the openings.
