I believe Garth is still alive. I looked it up. However, yes sad I have loved The Band since I first heard "Up on cripple creek" in the late sixties. I'm almost finished reading Robertson's book "Testimony", fascinating, He was a great song writer and story teller.
WOW❤I just found your channel, from Canada 🇨🇦 The Band is my fave group, with my teenage crush being Rick Danko (RIP) and The Last Waltz is a MUST SEE! Pure Canadiana 😊 Subbed
Garth Hudson’s organ playing really pulls this version together. The Weight is a perfect song for The Band’s combined elements of Americana, folk, rock, jazz, country, and R&B music.
I’m mid-song and can’t wait to hear you speak when it’s over. It’s clear you have the perfect disposition for this classic song. This was a great find for my first time on your channel. Thank you.
Really the best version of this song ever... But specially the final "afro musical crying" from The Staples, just amazing! From the Very Deep Roots of Time!
If you want to see a great concert movie, checkout The Last Waltz! The band was breaking up and they had a tribute cocert at Winterland, San Francisco, with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Ringo Star, Eric Clapton and so many more! A true must see! You'll thank me for this suggestion....
I've never seen any negative comments on this clip. How could you? It's perfect, and as a long-time Band-fan, nostalgic. These guys always managed to penetrate my soul and akashic experience with their style of music.
The respect you’ve shown, the fact that you didn’t interrupt at all, got you a subscriber the first time I’ve ever seen you react..fact is I just wanted to hear the song, and I found you…if you let the artists play, I will stay after and listen to what you have to say..A+ reaction
I saw these guys live 3 times once in the late 70's when they toured behind Bob Dlyan. They were one of the greatest live bands ever to hit the stage. If you watch the flim The Last Waltz you realize how great they were at supporting other legends who were notoriously finicky about who they played with. Niel Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Niel Diamond. They showcased all these artists in that film and gave them all the support they needed to perform at their very best. What a legendary band.
The version done during the actual concert wasn't up to Scorsese's standards so they set this up later so they could include this masterpiece in the film.
Actually this is a studio recorded version not live. This was done by Robbie Robertson during the production of the Album The Last Waltz from the movie of the same name. The Staples Singers never actually performed this song live at the Last Waltz concert. The other Band members were pissed off at Robbie for including some acts like Niel Diamond (Who Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time) in the Concert and leaving out others. They decided to do a studio version with the Staples Singers and made it look live to fit into the theam of the Movie The Last Waltz. This information comes from Levon Helms book " This Wheels On Fire" about the history of The Band.
The band is four Canadians and one American, drummer Levon Helm, they used to be Bob Dylan’s back up band. Robbie Robertson wrote most of their songs. BTW You missed the impromptu jam session at the end of the video! R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel.
The Last Waltz was the best Concert Movie of all time, until J. Demme and Talking Heads make “Stop Making Sense”! Check out The Stapes’ versions of Life During Wartime and Slippery People. Slippery People is a staple of Mavis’ show to this day! You might also want to react to Mavis and Dave singing “Take Me to the River” the Al Green and Heads standard. It was a Kennedy Center Honors moment.
You see by the number of of comments that you don't have too many people that are familiar with weight one of them my songs I like back in the day I was trying to think of some of them without asking my daughter about love the band the Eagles next to Elvis I love Tom Jones I was really at the height of my N64 we went out dancing at least six nights a week and only reason we didn't go the 7th it's because the clubs were closed you didn't hear much Elvis but Elvis was on my mind cuz he was busy making those movies course we did buy these CDs from the movies or DVDs and then we have to go to the me almost I would like to say better than the Beatles I can't think of their name all I can tell you is the Gibbs brothers Andy Morris Robin and Barry not to me there is no one that can sing falsetto as good as Barry Gibb if I'm not mistaken even Robin sing my love for the Gibbs great songs like Massachusetts and I started a joke favorite Gibson song is tragedy Asbury got older he couldn't sing his fault peceto quite as high because he had back trouble and he said you have to really take a deep breath with your lungs and everything I guess to get up to that falsetto and his back trouble was interfering with that but he still did a hell of a job when they had a a show here in the states commitment writing Barry Gibb left in the other brothers have passed away you know how lonely he fails without his brothers they still write songs. He wrote his for I don't know how many people him and his brothers like Islands in the Stream Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton you don't send me any flowers anymore Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand he wrote for Diana Ross I could go home and on but that is one group now I can listen to but they still do not surpass the king this is one of my good days feel like talking to anybody that calls me or I'll call them saw some go talk to John he owes me some songs one of these days I will be able to afford to get a cup of coffee with you I promise Harry's friend in the United States of America and I only hope that we get to stay that way and not turn into a fascist country in 2024 which keeps me up at night but maybe I'll be gone by then but I have a daughter and granddaughters and great-grandchildren that I would like to leave a country that is a domestic country not a facist I know I should leave certain subjects out and I feel like if I can't talk to John as long as I'm using the right language for my community I know politics might be out of here but I'm not trying to use anyone's name I'm just let people guess who I'm talkin about I will let you go for this the day hope you're not too bored with me Laura
I remember this song from my middle song from when I was in my middle teens, Always loved it! Thank you John for sharing this, I haven't heard it in several years! Love you John! Crazy Old 65 year old woman from Cleveland Tennessee!
Did you notice the bass had no frets. Never seen that before. Best version of the weight, I agree. Mavis, what a voice, Staples truly took me to church. New subscriber here. Thank you for sharing your time and reaction. Peace
I just purchased "The Last Waltz" online. There isn't a bad song on it!!! My favorite after the Weight is "It Makes No Differnce". Bob Dylan sings his song he wrote "Forever Young". Lots of good music there!!! You look like you could star in a Ricky Nelson movie!!
From start to finish The Last Waltz is brilliant Love Levon Helm (RIP) the heart & soul of the group A few of my favorites from The Last Waltz... With The Band & friends Up on Cripple Creak Ophelia Mystery Train ( w/Paul Butterfield ) The Shape I'm In Helpless (w/Neil Young) & Oh so many more....
Now thats a performance you’d be proud to say you produced. Thats not even a benchmark anyone can hope to reach these days, with all the recording tricks available today 🤘❤️ directed by martin scorsese

Yes I remember these turns very well we getting into the light 70s maybe early 80s when I was waiting love the song really groovy I will be 77 tomorrow on May 30th and you told me we could do it go when you got back from your trip that his hand in mine was coming so I was hoping it was coming for my birthday when I posted a new song I love that that lady music and I remember the error of that music was into I think most all that was before disco came in I like a lot of those sounds back then you know getting old I can't think of some of the bands names right off that I listen to through my teenage daughter and I'll keep holding on and waiting you had been really good to us Elvis fans anyway so we can expect Elvis all the time I would like to go down the Elvis Rabbit Hole as far as we could go but I did love the song you just played AKA Elvis Junkie
Happy Birthday Laura! I hope that you had a great day ❤️🎉☺️ More Elvis coming your way soon! Sorry that I did not manage to react to "His Hand in Mine" yet but I will do it as soon as possible. It's my little birthday present for you!
Hey hey JG; this was fabulous! Didn't recognize the title, but at the go of the intro, I recalled it! Hope all is well. Will fully dive into my messages this weekend & circulate things 😉 KIT ... I hope things calm down, because a much destressing is needed! ❤ Stay safe & strong! Btw; Really dig your reaction 👍
The perfect marriage of blues/Soul, and rock and roll! Mavis is a queen! If you haven't seen "The Last Waltz," it's required musician viewing, along with "Muscle Shoals", "The Wrecking Crew" and "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." The Staples Family recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL -- just about 40 miles west of me, and FAME Recording Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound (Jackson Highway) are essential stops if you're interested in music history. They absolutely took it to CHURCH in this video! Loved the reaction. Peace!
This is literally one of the greatest bands of all time. They played and recorded with dozens of great names. I'll bet over 1000 songs. You need to watch the whole movie it's awesome
One of the greatest songs ever written and certainly one of the greatest performances ever recorded... Thank you for doing this one, and have a great day
John I'm trying to get this with no errors when you came back from your trip you said Laura his hand in mine is coming well I've been waiting I've only has heard one song from you since you've been back that was the weight which I commented on a while back about a song that I have never ever heard from Elvis now I know that there's probably some tunes I've never heard but if I'm sure at least 90% of them it's called The Last Farewell I would like you to come in on it what you think the song is talkin about myself I think it's a man either leaving England or going back to England one of the wars I would think is an unusual song Elvis to sing I think and then the other day I found the most chill Bump song America and then I found which out will you probably never find again I just came over and accidentally he was performing on New Year's Eve and he sang Auld Lang Syne and it was midnight so the audience was singing along with him so you can't hear him back clear but that particular song If I don't hear that on New Year's Eve at the stroke of midnight will it's not New Year's to me I love all Auld Lang Syne maybe that one came out alright anyway I will let you go this is your friend from America and then I also found he must have been performing on New Year's Eve of course your friend I'm sure you didn't travel through Mississippi cuz there's nothing here to see except if he go to Tupelo I do have Elvis's little shotgun house and souvenirs and everything I'm sure that helps Tupelo with their income terrorist to have to stop in at Tupelo my friend bought me some shot glasses with the little shotgun house on it and some heart-shaped Elvis plates I did very well on my birthday this year except for those 277 candles on my cake they look 10 ft tall
That's amazing Laura! Thanks for your comment. Yes, but I have to upload some pre-recorded videos first. I will record my "His Hand In Mine" reaction in the next few days. Thanks for you patience. ❤️ Have a fantastic day!
@@johngibsonmusic I understand John I'm not trying to the rush you or anything I know how it works and you got to kind of go in and how they were put into you as a request and I don't expect to jump to the head of the list AKA Elvis Junkie
@@johngibsonmusic well I just read your comment again this hope you have a great day too and I hope I don't take too much of your time with my silly errors and thing as his kind of embarrassing to me and I might just start not requesting or commenting because I make too many errors and I'm not mentally challenged or anything I'm just getting a little slower and slower once more Laura
