David Harrison oh indeed I've read his journal but I believe that something in the way is the greatest Nirvana song and one of the greatest of all time
Britpop was the last revolution in rock according to most critics. Britain's response to grunge was led by bands like Oasis, Blur, and Suede who made conscious efforts to sound antithetical to grunge. Also, the garage rock/rock-revival scene of the early 2000's was important for the same reasons as grunge, but its popularity and influence were a fraction in comparison.
It took 40 years for the Ramones debut album to go gold. They have a total of two gold albums. Most of their albums never came close to cracking the top 100. I didn't say NOBODY liked the Ramones, but the fact is, in the big picture, nobody liked the Ramones. They were a niche band with a small group of hardcore fans, that's it. Nirvana kicked their ass in every way possible.
Plant meant America "got it's own punk"in that the music from the streets finally broke through to the mainstream and created a social and cultural revolution with it like punk had in England years before. Trust me, Zeppelin were aware of punk and new wave in America. Plant's knowledge of pop music history is enclyclopedic.
Than he would know punk rock originated in America not England. Britain got "it's own punk" when the New York Dolls influenced the Sex Pistols.. when It comes to 20th century music, usually the pattern was that America invented something and then English bands popularized it and did it way better lol
@@crackawood The New York Dolls. I mean, it's always arguable where you draw the line at *first*. UK people might argue the Kinks are an early punk influence that predates the Dolls or even Iggy Pop.
That line about rock "the future is someone playing in their bedroom you don't even know about" hit really hard. I know I can do this shit, I'm gonna do it, we'll bring rock back to the masses. my friends listen to rap but I listen to rock but everytime I play a song everybody is dancing, that's the power of rock. It has no boundaries.
If you love it keep it going. Really thought I wanted to make it in my 20s and couldve worked harder to "make it" but i thought it would just come but at the beginning of my 30s rocks coming back for better or worse... and I'm writing better stuff than ever and releasing and performing is even easier now. Do it for yourself and love it
Yeah, completely slept through two decades of distinct and superior waves of punk than anything that came out of England. I suspect the only thing that got his attention were bands that could play arenas and his frame of reference for the sex pistols was more of token acknowledgement
Punk is not from England is from the USA from New York it started with The Ramones not with The Sex Pistols in England, The Pistols got there inspiration for there style from Televisión a punk band from New York who actually started the punk fashion look too why do the british say that grunge was the punk of the USA when the americans are the ones that really created punk in the first place
Those band started in some type like experimental rock that it was call proto-punk like also The New York Doll and The Velvet Undergrow, but that name didnt come out until after the first punk wave that started with The Ramones.
"Punk Rock," the style of music started in Detroit and new York certainly. But "punk rock" the movement, the thing that happened everyone worldwide was talking about and scared everyone to death, was in the uk. The ramones are arguably the most influential bands of all time but only the sex pistols and nirvana truly made the earth quake in such a short amount of time.
“It’s like a fire and it burns and it burns and it burns and that sounds like a romantic fire idea until you realize the thing keeping the fire alight is bodies” - Pete Townsend 💔
It’s nearly impossible to sit here and watch that and write this and NOT feel that someones somewhere is channeling punk rock ideals.... screaming loudly... playing their instruments terribly and proudly... things have bottomed repeatedly... it is time for a movement... some kid somewhere just not caring about money... instagram ... social media etc... Channel iggy... Kurt... dee dee... etc... bring rock punk metal WHATEVER you label it... OUT of its coma ... I pray I pray for this everyday
Robert are you shitting me America is what influenced all of the punk bands in England. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols said that "I was so influenced by The New York Dolls and in particular Johnny Thunders (guitar player from the Dolls) and Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers it was embarrasing". Other bands in addition to the Dolls, and the Heartbreakers were the Ramones, The Dead Boys, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, Television, The Talking Heads etc etc. The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned all were in AWE of Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers and al the other punk bands from New York (even though the Dead Boys were originally from Ohio)
INFLUNCED is not the same as stealing. Your boy robby and the gang literally stole notes and chord progressions and even lyrics from other songs and put it into their music. Doesn't negate that Zeppelin is awesome, but for him to have that pompose attitude and incorrect statement is laughable when you look at the facts.
The New York Dolls were probably the first Punk band back in 72. The whole stereotypical glamour and style that surrounded Punk was probably influenced more by the sex pistols than any other punk band of the seventies but yeah I agree that America started Punk and Britain caught on. Nirvana was big in America but they were put on the same pedestal as the Beatles in England before nevermind was released in Sept 91, it wasn't until nevermind that Nirvana were the biggest thing since Elvis in America
It seems naive of some of these rock stars to assume they knew what he was going through, “the pressures of fame”, I don’t see him as being that deeply affected by the fame, he just didn’t want it in his face so he actively fought against it. Good for the networkers, but it’s not for everyone. His was a Liberal family in a dying logging town, dorms and house parties, then slogging through some very impressive self managed tours of Europe and u.s.He saw a lot of people against him and his world. Only to turn into more avalanches of souls, now trying to scrape their own worlds out of his fortune. The whole time dealing with a severe stomach pain. And still said to be the nicest, sincere person, with an incredible talent. Give the man his jaded edge he was a badass through and through. Heroine and fame is your common thread I suspect that is what they are drawing their views from.
he meant in a mainstream way i think, but yes actually punk rock was in america first because of the proto-punk bands like the stooges, the new york dolls, mc5, then the ramones came along in 1974 and were the first true punk rock band, in england the first punk rock bands formed in 1975/1976, so yeah it was in america first. but in england punk rock became mainstream, it never did in america until nirvana and green day became big in the 90s....
Punk rock begun in the late 60's with the english garage bands like without The Kinks i think punk as we know would be different so. . . i lost myself, who cares where punk came from?
Kurt started musical developments from age 2-26 , he never stopped playing discovering reading knowing listening singing playing guitar and piano 🎹 🎶🎸🖐️💎💙🌈🤍🎤
D.R.I. Dealing With It - Play it, enjoy, look at the year of release, go see them live IF YOU CAN! They still sound like a big four band. Think for yourself.
That's the thing about Nirvana and The Sex Pistols, they are great bands, most other punk is not as good, punk needs to be musical, the myth is punk bands can't play, and this is true in a lot of cases, they rely on posturing and attitude. But Nirvana and Sex Pistols were GREAT, and it wasn't due to being punk that made them so. Punk needs to hit a nerve in mainstream consciousness, it needs to be popular in order to make the opposing statement in the face of success. Kurt Cobain understood this, he will alwaqys be interesting because he worked on multiple levels that seemingly contradicted each other. Cut short, he embodied this contradiction and often, people like Kurt do this unknowingly and to their greatest detriment.
Why isn't Inutero songs edited into this video. Songs like "Moist Vagina", "Frances Farmer will have her revenge", "Penny royal tea", "rape me". I mean if they can't pick out some great tracks to edit onto the video from these era's. I mean come on! 🤔
I get what Mr. Costello means, but "selling" The Clash to the general audience shouldn't be seen as a fluke. Selling La Macarena or Gangnam Style on the other hand...
I don't believe for a minute that he killed himself because he couldn't handle fame. He had depression like a lot of unfamous people. I've know a few people that killed themselves & you wouldn't see it coming. If he never made it he probably would have did the same thing. Maybe at 25 maybe at 42 who knows.
I did watch it & like a lot of things out there your getting one perspective. They twist things a little bit & it does seem convincing. I thought maybe she did it.. In the 3 1/2 years he was in the spotlight he mentioned so many times about being suicidal in songs & interviews. He spoke in a lot of half truths even when he said he was being sarcastic. So I'm not going to jump on the Courtney definitely did it bandwagon.
He was In a good place, out of rehab and seeing his daughter sober. Wouldn’t communicate with Courtney love and was also getting ready to divorce her. You do the math
@@durden2480 lol do the math? Bruh what you said is so fucking retarded and based on senseless conjecture that the idea of YOU suggesting for someone to do the “math” is not just comical but hysterical You, me, or anyone else that did not know the man has absolutely no right whatsoever to suggest he was “happy” or “okay” therefore couldn’t have been depressed and killed himself. He openly talked about depression, his addiction, and had a cynical outlook on a lot of things. Lots and lots of people suffer from addiction and depression and unfortunately lots of people kill themselves every day…. Speaking from experience, I was a depressed IV heroin addict and I was a touring drummer in a band living my dream for many, many years. People thought I was okay all the time. The truth was I was extremely addicted to heroin, hated my life, and did not care if I lived or died. But I never fucking let anyone know that. In fact I projected the opposite. People that are depressed often portray themselves as being okay or happy, it’s extremely common. The facts are, again no one truly knows what someone is going through, even if they’re your family, best friend, spouse, whatever…let alone someone with the egregious amount of pressure this man was dealing with. It’s pretty disrespectful for you to project completely baseless conjecture about this man’s passing…in fact it’s crazy. Did you ever stop to consider the only person to profit from that theory is the fucking detective and director of the film?? Huh how convenient. If Courtney had anything to do with his death, his family, band mates and friends would never Fucking get on stage with the woman or associate with her…yet they still do. Sure they probably don’t like her. She probably wasn’t a good influence for him. But he was a grown man and made his own decisions. She didn’t fucking kill him. You need to accept that.
Punk rock started in the United States years before the Sex Pistols and the Clash. The Ramones had 3 albums out before the Sex Pistols had their first.
Wow, Plant really doesn’t know his history. “They finally got their own punk”?? I thought everyone knew that the original punk movement labeled as “punk” started in New York. All of the original UK punk bands have stated that they all formed or started playing that kind of music after the Ramones played in London. Suicide, Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Ramones, Talking Heads, etc. were all playing at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City in 1974 before Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned, or Buzzcocks even existed yet. Not to mention Velvet Underground, MC5, Stooges, NY Dolls, etc. who were punk bands before the term even existed. The original British punk bands were arguably more immediately influential on future music than the American ones were (outside of Ramones). But to say the US “finally got their punk” is like saying the US “finally got their blues after Cream”. 🤦♂️
That new Iggy Pop album Every Loser is cool. And as a crazy Nirvana freak I am glad he says that about dangerous business. I recall one of Kurts friends saying that about how his death made him realize they were naieve to try and fuck the system because it will eat you up.
Cobain deserves ever accolade hes recieved and more overrated more like underrated fancy fucks r overrated its how it comes across that matters long live the sex pistols there a bunch of wholesome blokes
"Is fun to be alive it's a hell of a Lot better than being dead" thats the true, the whole "pressures of fame" is shit, some dudes got hookup on heroín others don't thats why some are alive and some don't.
Green Day was not Punk. They where a sell out, fake, copy cat punk wanna be band. real Punk is Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, TSOL, The Descendents, JFA, ETC!!!!!
Sorry mr.Plant NIRVANA IS ORIGINAL BAND AND NOT FROM LONDON AND LIVERPOOL OR L.A.!NIRVANA IS AMERICAN NORTHWEST ABERDEEN.WA.DC-UNRECOGNIZED SMALL SITY AND KURT IS LAST ROCK ICON OF THE WORLD,MUSIC TODAY IS STUPID AND BULLSHIT!
Everyone! You don’t have to necessarily say someone was the greatest guitarist or band because they died, that’s not an ho eat evaluation. Grunge was garbage just like the name implies
"It's like a fire...It burns, it burns and it burns. It's like a romantic idea, until you realize what's keeping it a light...is bodies." - Pete Townshend 😂 Is he referring to Nazis burning Jews, wtf 😒 🤨
Nirvana were influential because they came along with the right sound at the right time. But musically, they're one of the most overrated bands in history, and Cobain doesn't deserve the accolades he gets for tossing his life away to drugs and ultimately suicide
Some people get their panties in a bunch when someone tells them the truth. I love Nirvana but you're absolutely correct. My relationship with them is not so much the quality of music but the connection to Kurt himself. I'm sure a lot of his fans even now like them for that reason. Countless people thank them for saving their life so yes I can understand why people love them so much. But yes I wouldn't exactly call them musical geniuses.
If nirvana doesn't got the success that they got, all rockers still keep using that horrible fashion of the hair metal. The band simplified the music, that was getting more and more unreal, year after year.
