They did make the sexiness very overt intentionally, and you hit the meaning on the head. It’s about something you love that consumes you. Bangchan really hints at that when he talks about setting the mic up. They did very intentional things with the visuals, while the message is still there. And I’m almost positive they used ‘sticky’ when they were doing song camp for this. In this trio of unit songs, (all have a howl in harmony episode), there is Surfin’ - Changbin, Lee know and Felix, and Gone Away (Han, Seungmin and I.N). I love them all, and the contrast is… wow.
The contrast and variety is insane and unique. But I agree, Howl in Harmony was an eye opener in how they make their songs but also explained more behind this one and I appreciated it, gave me that more understanding into the meaning. Another amazing way of their instrumentals being layered and building, and the vocals and dancing, stunning as always.
Red light is made only by bangchan and hyunjin! And both of them explained about the meaning behind of the lyrics. They're both r&b music lovers, they working on songs together the most. They said red light is about OBSESSION with their work,, it could be another part of ourselves,they make artistic deep dark mv and ofc it's most sexy and different song by skz !! It's best ever smth that is fantastic perfect in everything and their chemistry was phenomenal. I feel like if you are going to react to these unit songs (Red Lights, Gone Away, Surfin' from the Thunderous Album), you should watch their behind the scenes series they did for them (Howl in Harmony) It goes into the song details and meanings and other fun stuff. Doesn't have to be a public video, but I think too many people focus on Red LIghts being a Sexy song by appearance and not the overall intention/meaning they intended with it (Edit: I'm lowkey impressed you managed to hit the nail just about on the head for the actual meaning). Its supposed to be about the compulsion behind being a workaholic basically. Its like Silent Cry, sexy dance moves, but the lyrics are deep as hell. Also, they do an OT8 version of this song for their tour, definitely worth checking out, between Minho and Changbin its damaging.... (Personal Opinion)
Absolutely, Howl in Harmony gave me a new appreciation for the song with what they really are talking about and the message in the song. And yeah… I’ve seen clips of OT8 version… deadly… but I still want to be able to listen to it 24/7 lol

As u said red light is too perfect that u can't focus on specific parts cuz their vocals, chemistry, acting,style, melody, production and guitar everything was best!! There's no song in kpop that could compare with this! But still we need appreciate their vocals and their musicians working. Hyunjin is main dancer and rapper but listening to his vocals here is absolutely gorgeous and everything and chan vocals Specially his deep range of vocals is incredible, unexpected but these 2 are perfectly suited for this song and their harmonies was everything,, my fav song forever. you are 100% correct, by the way. there are a lot of people who reduce this song to JUST "sexy" tho, unfortunately. this song and concept and the depth to it, especially with the lyrics and meaning and metaphors in the mv combined, is INCREDIBLE.
I think you hit it on the head with how they used sexy as a metaphor for their struggles with their work ethic and need/obsession/compulsion. They talked about how they work even when they should probably take more rest time and Bangchan has talked with us before about his troubles with insomnia ... and of course they are freaking perfectionists in the best possible way. They work all time and even if they love it, they can see how it can become unhealthy - but they can't live without it. "I cannot breathe ..."
The mirroring of their dance and the deep intent gazes into actual mirrors show two parts of one person fighting for control. I love the commitment of Chan and Hyunjin to this MV. I love this song so much!!!

These ‘Song Camp’ contents came out before the release, so you can watch them before checking out the actual songs, the actual music won’t get spoiled.

they did a mini series called (Howl in Harmony) it has 5 episodes, so for the album NO EASY they did 3 unit songs and the mini series is about each unit going to a song camp to create their unit song. episode 1 is (Gone Away) team (Han, Seungmin, I.N), episode 2 is (Surfin) team (Lee Know, Changbin, Felix), episode 3 is (Red Lights) team (BangChan, Hyunjin), episode 4 is all of them coming together and showing each other what they've prepared and deciding on their mv concepts, and finally episode 5 is the mv shooting bts. I think listening to the songs then watching the show will be great for you guys since the songs are bangers and the show is fun.

On Howl In Harmony: Song Camp, they show them working on the song from the base track. Hyunjin says within FIVE seconds that it reminds him of 50 Shades of Gray. They also suggested the chains and suits for the MV. But strictly speaking, the song is about compulsion, specifically their struggle for perfection--no matter how exhausted they are, they're minds won't let them rest, hence the line 'No matter how hard I try to run away, set the mic up'. But they also demanded that the video be SEXY (underlined it and everything).
Fact is "red light" became the first skz b side song to hit 100M in youtube and Spotify🔥. In Spotify after 2 years it's getting more than 100k streams daily & only b side song to do it so far.
The lyrics for Red Lights and also for Taste were (mostly) written by Hyunjin. Both songs are WAY more adult-themed than the usual Stray Kids songs. Also, both are about obsessive relationships, but Red Lights is about the toxic side / the duality of obsession. It can also be interpreted as being about a kind of dark internal struggle.

The analysis is on point. The sensual side is just a cover, the song is about obsession, toxic relations, greed for perfection. In this song, it's about Chan and Hyunjin's relation with their art. Obsessed with making music and obsessed with perfecting the dance. I am pretty sure they represent both the sides of a single person, gaining and losing control and the continuous battle of dominance to the extent that it's lethal.

I think it's really about obsession, but an obsession that kind of locks you into it, restraining every aspect of your life so you have to dedicate yourself to it. Bangchan is famously known for suffering insomnia due to working into late so his obsession for music while Hyunjin had the same thing woth dance, dedicating a lot of time to it when people said he was not that good a long time ago.

It is really worth talking a watch of their Camp Howl in Harmony series. It shows some of the process behind the three subunit tracks from the NoEasy album. Of course it was edited and they obviously did lots more work than was shown on camera, but you do get to watch and listen to them brainstorming a bit and get a sense of their working processes. They also show a bit of them working with the video directors and filming those.

i think in their recent japanese album The Sound, Hyunjin wrote a song that feels similar to Red Lights called DLMLU, I think you guys should check it out! It also has sick guitar and underlying messages of restraint rather than the sexiness people might think of it upon first listen!

It came off waaay more sexy than they were intending lol. But its about obsession the red lights represents the recording studio. They cant get away from the work, all hours in the studio. But they wont admit who actually wrote the song lol.

I would bet that someone already mentioned it but watch their series ‘Howl in Harmony’ ep 3 is Chan and Hyunjin starting the process (eps 1&2 are the other groups each got an episodic) - eps 4 is them coming together and MV talk and ep 5 is them shooting the videos - these were done pretty much right after Hyunjin’s hiatus - its some insight that should help your understanding/thoughts in the song :)

You should watch Howl in Harmony ep 3 to see Chan and Hyunjin developing the song. Ep 4 and 5 are about making the music video. I love this song so much, it made me a Stay. I heard it in another video and it caught my attention straight away. It just stands out and has such a great atmosphere and tone.

Wow you got the real meaning at first try, they intentionally made the song sexy but it’s more than just that because this song is about being obsessive, since they are workaholic, they wanna do something else but they still ended up working without meaning to.
Re: the actual video though, yes I think you guys were definitely on the right track. The song is about a toxic obsession and is framed in the "fifty shades" type genre, but it's really a metaphor for their work and the sacrifices they make. The clearest example in the lyrics is 'No matter how hard I try to run away, set the mic up / Until the moon falls asleep, even deeper' which is pretty directly related to Chan's obsession with making music and well-storied troubles with insomnia and working rather than sleeping. As someone else mentioned, the Howl In Harmony "song camp" videos show them discussing and writing the song and they explain it a little more!
