In a Japanese interview speaking about working with BAND-MAID, Visconti said he liked the band’s originality, and that getting to meet them in real life was like a dream come true. He explained how Saiki and Miku sang for almost 8 hours, which he revealed is longer than any other artist he has known. He commended their professionalism, and that they greatly met his expectations. Miku Kobato also commented: “Tony is so kind, he really likes BAND-MAID. He’s a really sociable, friendly and wonderful person. We also got to record vocals in the same studio in New York where David Bowie recorded. He listened to our wishes and opinions while producing for us. We are truly grateful. We’d like to work hard so that the next time we meet Tony, we can show him we’ve grown even more.”

I always say Misa and Akane are Band-Maid's secret weapon, the solid rhythm they bring to every song is enhanced by Mincho, Miku and Saiki. These talented ladies always impress me

Band Maid and Tony Visconti made a song together with a message. He still loves them and saw them on their US tour last year and lent them a rather expensive guitar to look at and nervously play off stage while Miku introduced it to the audience during the show. So they still have a connection. As for the song. It is not universally liked by fans but other than the over heavy use of a message in the video it is well done and superbly played and put across.

The decreased popularity is twofold: first, many felt the song itself was fine, but the video was over preachy, thus a turn-off. Similar in situation to Start Over. Second, many had issues with the overcompression with the recording.

These girls are a serious stuff. This song played live is absolutely absorbing. The last time they performed in New York (a year ago) they played it for Tony Visconti, who produced it back in 2019.

Saiki and Miku recorded the vocals at Tony Visconti studio in New York, while the other band members recorded the instrumentals in Tokyo. Tony also gave his impression of the two members: I love the originality of BAND-MAID. It was like a dream come true to meet them. During recording Saiki and Miku sang from eight-hours straight. I don’t know many artists with that kind of stamina, I was taken back by their professionalism. They definitely met my expectations. :)

FYI I got this from Google about the symbolism of dragons in Japanese culture. Explains the use of dragons in the song. all, Japanese dragons are the benefactors and protectors of mankind; powerful and wise guardians that shield us from universal dangers, and impart their wisdom. A symbol of good fortune, they bring us happiness, offering us strength and courage at each important turning point in our lives

Love this song. It brings me back to my childhood: straight up late 60s early 70s psychedelic acid rock. Even the video echoes that. I get strong Hendrix and Yardbirds vibes with a little Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane and Roger McGuinn undertones.

Can’t figure out how any fan can dislike this song but to each their own. To me it’s fantastic. I’d take an album like this in a heartbeat… but, likewise, I love the direction they have taken instead, which makes this an outlier. I love many forms of rock and they do them all exceedingly well so wherever they go I’m happy to follow!

@@jeffedwards9180 Lol, well when ranking songs something has to be # 50… and something has to be last, even if you think it’s good. One of the songs I listen to least is “Sense”. Not entirely sure why since it has plenty of elements in common with songs I love. It just doesn’t hit me the same as the others. Still a good song though.

I very much enjoy your reactions. This particular Band-Maid song goes on and off of my playlist depending on my mood. It is a decent song but quite different than a lot of their other material. At some point you guys have got to try their song Why Why Why. I am not sure if there is an official video of it. However the live version from their Day Of Maid okyuji is incredible. The song starts with Miku clearing her throat and belting out a long yell as the music jumps right into overdrive. She also repeats the yell and even does a vocal trill in one part. Lots of other good stuff is included, such as Kanami stomping on a wah a couple of times, and Misa laying down some bass thunder that Sam will surely get at least one replay moment out of. Check it out when you get a chance.

Dragons, a poignant commentary of the sad, self-inflicted current state of the world, is a great plunge into the bluesy rock style given to us by Hendrix and others. Heard live (and without the overly compressed mix), the song jumps from the souls of the members and into our minds as a warning. Let's all heed that warning and support each other and our home planet! Thx, Chris & Sam!

The only thing I don't like with this is the way it's too overly compressed. I MUCH prefer the LCS Live Version, the soundscape is so much wider. I especially love the visuals from LCS. And as far as I know for the vocals it was Saiki and Miku layered dozens of times. I think this is one of the few songs were Kanami, Akane and MISA didn't add any background vocals to the mix. And while Kanami wrote the music, the lyrics were written by Tom Kenney.

I think this song signifies why most of the fans don't prefer the whole Conqueror (CQ) album. Most people doesn't want their favorite band to change their post production mix of the album. If someone makes a poll of what is the best Band-Maid album so far, CQ will be like at the bottom half of the poll.

The fanbase is very split about this one, partially because of the production and the English lyrics and partially because of the video from what I have seen over the years (I didn't know about them yet when this released). Tony Visconti did the production on the vocals and Saiki and Miku went to New York to record them, he also came to their concert when they were in New York last year (I believe). I personally don't dislike the track (although the chorus is a bit whiny), but I think the studio version is very overcompressed (the whole album is somewhat) and it does turn me off from listening to it, it's fine live though. But I am not that negative about the track as some (I love the solo section) and as you have seen in the comments, some people really like it as well.
@realdocloco
@realdocloco 8 месяцев назад
The production is not the problem though - it's the post-production (the mastering) which has been done in Japan and give a very heavy compression. It's very likely the mastering engineer used the same mastering process for every song of the album - but the song produced by Visconti wasn't produced the same way than the other songs, so the result is not uniform and not really suited for this song.
@MaartenT
@MaartenT 8 месяцев назад
@@realdocloco Thanks, I never really make a distinction as I bunch both together production and post-production under the same name, but yes, it's mainly the mastering. This is actually an "issue" I have with the majority of Japanese bands/albums to some extent. They tend to overcompress everything way too much (probably to make it easier to fit it all into 1 sound?), so in a lot of cases at least some instruments sound like crap because of that. It's like they use a pop or electronic production on rock or metal instruments and it just doesn't work (at least for me). But to be fair, I remember being upset by the drum production on 2 doom metal albums from 2012 as well because they sounded really bad and overcompressed, so it's probably not a Japan only problem. It makes those albums semi-unlistenable for me unfortunately.
@realdocloco
@realdocloco 8 месяцев назад
@@MaartenT You're totally right about the overcompression in Japanese music (and not only them). That "loudness war" is a side effect of playlists and streaming services, because a heavily compressed track sounds louder in a tracklist, so it jump to the ears of the listener. At the opposite, a normaly compressed track will be quieter. So that issue is generated by commercial reasons, and not artistic ones.

@MaartenT 8 месяцев назад
@@armynurseboy Strange, Manners is probably my favourite Band-Maid track and Dragon Cires isn't even close. But I can see where you are coming from since it's also a bit more bluesy, just like Manners. I don't think the post-production on Manners is a bad as it is on this track though, but to be fair post-production isn't great on any of their albums.

Love the song and its production, not the mastering (it's not Visconti's work) and I have mixed feelings about the clumsy video. Visconti became a real friend of the band, and don't miss a NYC concert, like last year (he even brought his very rare original Zemaitis 12 to let them play it, as he knows Miku love those guitars).

For me there are two problems. Don't get me wrong, Tony Visconti is a true legend but I think he pushed the production a bit too far. However, lyrics are a bigger problem. They are not by Band-Maid but by Visconti's friend. I mean... Dragon cries and Phoenix flies in the same song. It's just cringey. We start out with what seems to be a serious message and then immediately it turns to friggin whiney love song. ARG! I admit it's an achievement to to make such a mess from only so so few words but boy did he pull it off. Sometimes trust and respect to senpais is not a good idea.
